live from vallejo with the very latest. anne. >> reporter: yeah. that update was just pushed back. now they are going to give us new information at around 12:30. so we'll continue to follow it. but what we know is that as of last night, three suspects had been taken into custody in connection with this shooting along i-80. and here's a look at the minivan that took the bullets yesterday when the shooting happened at around 3:30 p.m. and near the san pablo exit in richmond. its windows were blown out an this happened in the eastbound lanes. witnesses told police that people in a silver dodge charger opened fire? >> a man in the minivan was shot five times in his head and chest, airlifted to the hospital. a woman was shot in the hand. the traffic nightmare lasted for about five hours last night. once they had to shut down the eastbound lanes to begin their

investigation, investigators collecting shell casings and other evidence but this all happened during the evening commute. the traffic was backed up to the maze. we have seen a couple of dozen freeway shootings along the i- 80 corridor around that area of the east bay. over the past year. so the chp is going to be talking about the larger issue concerning drivers. so while this shooting appears to have been targeted, obviously it is a dangerous situation when you have people shooting at each other going 60 miles per hour from the local freeways. we are waiting to hear more from the chp. we'll have updates for you on our website, cbssf.com and tonight at 5:00 and 6:00 with our reporter da lin. right now live in vallejo, anne makovec, kpix 5. thank you for that report. >> new at noon, chopper 5 capturing the aftermath of an apartment fire in san rafael.

it started at 9:15 a.m. on bayview street, centered in a ground level apartment that was completely destroyed. the person living there was injured and rushed to the hospital. at least one other person was treated for smoke inhalation. >> turns out besides the unit destroying on the ground floor, approximately 10 other units on both sides and above received moderate to extensive smoke damage. >> no word yet on the cause of the fire. an oakland police officer is recovering after his patrol car hit another car this morning. it happened around 5:30 on broadway about 1 block away from oakland technical high school. investigators say that the officer was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. the driver in the other car was not hurt. the cause of the crash is under investigation. berkeley police want to know if you recognize any of these people. investigators released photos of 30 people they say participated in the riots at uc- berkeley last month. vandals set fires and broke

windows at the student union on the night former breitbart editor mlio yiannopoulos was set to speak on campus. the riot shut down the event and caused $100,000 in damage to the university. at least 6 people had minor injuries. police are also encouraging witnesses to may have more photos of that night to come forward. new at noon, east bay congresswoman barbara lee introduced a bay partisan bill to prevent more u.s. troops from being sent to syria. the legislation comes after news that hundreds of u.s. marines just arrived in northern syria. they will support local forces preparing for an assault on the city of raqqa. that's isis' self-declared capital. the white house is continuing its full-court press to sell the gop plan to repeal and replace obamacare. weijia jang reports the president and vice president are meeting with lawmakers and key constituents at the white house today. >> reporter: president trump has called key house committee chairman to the white house to thank them for clearing the gop healthcare plan through its first major hurdles.

>> this is the time we're going to get it done. we're working together. we have some great results. we have tremendous spirit. and i think it's something that's just going to happen very shortly. >> reporter: but final passage is far from certain with some conservatives calling the current plan "obamacare light." >> i'll vote for the bill if it's a total repeal of obamacare where the replacement is the best healthcare system we had in the world in 2009. >> reporter: working to sell the plan, president trump invited some republican lawmakers to the white house thursday for a night of bowling. and the vice president is meeting with pro-life groups to reassure them the bill will defund planned parenthood. democrats say that hurts women. >> women lose access to comprehensive health coverage when the republicans defund planned parenthood. >> reporter: the white house is also preparing for a legal fight over the president's travel ban. the state of washington says a court ruling halting the president's first executive order should still apply to the

new order signed on monday. >> before the president may sort of declare himself able to implement of new executive order he needs to ask the court's permission. >> reporter: the new order bans travel for citizens from six muslim majority countries and removes iraq from the list. it is set to take effect on march 16. weijia jang, the white house. >> the president's travel ban will last for 90 days while the white house works on setting uptighter immigration controls. we are following breaking news right now. chopper 5 is live over the kings mountain area of san mateo county. crews are looking for a female hiker who went missing yesterday. she was last seen on skyline boulevard at 4 p.m. she was staying with her family at a bed and breakfast. and at about 1:30 yesterday afternoon, we're told she left to go on a hike. she hadn't returned by 7:30. her husband called police. so again, you can see -- [ screaming ] >> -- that live look at chopper

5 all of those crews ready to search for her. >> political unrest in south korea demonstrators loyal to the ousted president park clashed with police today after the country's highest court upheld her impeachment. the turmoil comes as north korea continues to violate u.n. resolutions. on monday the north launched four missiles toward japan. meanwhile, the u.s. is bolstering defenses in the region. a new missile defense system started arriving in south korea earlier this week. the federal jobs to report is out today. it shows u.s. employers added 235,000 jobs in february. the labor department says unemployment fell to 4.7%. this is the first report to capture a full month of job growth under president trump. stocks were trading higher after the jobs report was released with tech and industrial companies leading the gain. right now the dow is up 37 points. u.s. supreme court justice sonya sotomayor is in the bay area today. in about an hour stanford law

school is holding a conversation with justice sotomayor and the dean of the law school. she was on the berkeley campus yesterday for a question-and- answer session with law students. arnold schwarzenegger may be back to politics. sources tell politico the former governor is considering a run for u.s. senate next year. politico reports the 69-year- old may lead the gop for the ind -- leave the gop for the independent party to challenge dianne feinstein. schwarzenegger faced criticism from president trump after he took over hosting duties on "celebrity apprentice." he has since quit the reality show. new at noon, volkswagen pleaded guilty today to criminal charges stemming from its diesel emissions scandal. vw was hit with 3 felonies, conspiracy, construction of justice and falsifying statements. they will pay $4.3 billion in fines. settlements have cost the company billions more. back in 2015, the german automaker confessed to using software that allowed it to

pope francis causing a stir after saying he is open to married men becoming priests. kpix 5's maria medina has reaction from bay area catholics. >> it's a very important part of our life. >> reporter: rebecca and patrick haggerty are husband and wife and catholic. >> brings a different perspective to life and to how you attack things and deal with life. >> reporter: so when they heard pope francis is considering allowing married men to become priests, they agreed it's about time. >> it's an interesting development. >> reporter: the pope is considering the change to help with a shortage of priests. the change would allow already married men into priesthood a single priest still could not get married. >> surprised in a positive way. >> reporter: father john of the san jose diocese says american catholic churches have talked about the shortage for a while. they see the pope's announcement as a positive solution. >> this need for priests will continue to, um, plague us until we get new vocations and one of the sources is married

erika sandoval left the hospital in stanford in style wearing shades and matching pink bows. the formerly conjoined girls waved to cameras yesterday as they were taken into an ambulance. the girls were separated last december in an 18-hour surgery, they are going to uc-davis children's hospital for rehab and then going back home to sacramento. >> they are looking good. that's good to see. daylight saving time starts this weekend. we are springing forward which means we'll lose an hour of sleep. it turns out most american workers are already used to going to work deprived every sleep. adults are supposed to get eight ours of sleep each night. one in five workers reached that goal. the study shows that 20% of workers have called in sick just to get more sleep. >> it's definitely harder to concentrate when you feel tired or you're constantly having coffee to stay away. >> ironically, half of those surveyed say thinking about work keeps them up at night.

it actually is atmospheric river conditions, a weather pattern that we're familiar with that brought us copious amounts of rainfall in january and february. the rain is being diverted from the huge ridge of high pressure. so the end result is we're rain- free through at least midweek next week. but we'll have the clouds, we'll also wake up to some areas of low cloud and fog along the seashore and bayside. so meanwhile we're equally warm in many of our inland locations as it is in the central valley today. 73 in sacramento, stockton, right now in stockton it's in the 60s. it is now 50 on the south shore of the greater lake tahoe area going up to a high of 53 and on both shores we have temperatures into the 50s each day through the weekend including monday and for the first time, this year, no chains are needed for the high sierra for the weekend. our temperatures spanning from the mid-60s at the beaches, 60s, 70s common around the bay, 70s around the peninsula. up into the low and mid-70s away from the bay. 77 in pleasanton today. cloverdale to the north and also gilroy to the south.

questions and get advice from our pet expert, dr. jill chase. today's question is from ed walsh who adopted a cat last year. he says that he has kept her indoors and she has had no contact with other cats. but he wants to know if it's still a vector for certain parasite called toxoplasmosis. >> so it's a parasite. the question is a good question but the way it's transmitted can be placenta through the placenta. so it's possible that your cat could have toxoplasmosis and this is important because in humans if they were to become infected of a pregnant woman it could lead to babies with birth defects. parasites require a host to

live, right? and cats are the primary host for toxoplasmosis from eating infected rodents or potentially cat feces. it's spread through feces. if you weren't that your cat was shedding it, there's a potential for you to get it from the litter boxes. but we are not the host. so when it gets into a nonhost,it will go not where it's supposed to go and so it will invade tissues including the brain. it's a very dangerous organism in the nonhost subject. >> what's the best treatment? >> there's different treatments available. different medications are available. sometimes it can be very difficult to eradicate so the best of the situation is to prevent it from being transmitted to people. that's the best case. >> dr. jill chase, thanks. you, too, jax. >> if you have questions about your pets's health and well- being, just pets@kpix.com justjust email us at
