good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the pentagon says a u.s. missile strike against a syrian air force base knocked the airfield out of commission. president trump ordered last night's strike in retaliation for this week's chemical weapons attack against syrian civilians. now, 59 cruise missiles were ordered. fired from two u.s. warships in the mediterranean at the base in central syria. the u.s. says it's the same base where the chemical weapons attack was launched. the u.s. military say six people were killed and several were wounded. russians were notified in advance. sections of the base where russians were was not targeted. president trump addressed the nation last night. >> years of previous attempts at changing assad's behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically.

trump insisted we should stay out of syria but he was moved by the country's most recent chemical attack and said it saying the shift happened when he saw images of innocent children who were killed. last night u.s. missile strikes took direct aim at syrian leader bashar al assad. >> tonight i ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in syria from where the chemical attack was launched. >> reporter: two u.s. navy warships in the mediterranean sea fired a total of 59 tomahawk missiles aimed at this air base in central syria. >> it is in this vital national security interest of the united states to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons. >> reporter: in an impromptu press conference secretary of state rex tillerson told reporters that president trump made the decision to strike thursday. >> it does demonstrate that president trump is willing to

ammunition depot, and an air defense system. a massive fire was seen raging there hours after the attack, the syrian army confirming six people were killed, several more wounded. according to the pentagon, the missiles were launched from ships in mediterranean. they were specifically targeting a base storing weapons and chemicals. more than 80 were killed. the pentagon said today's strike was intended to deter the regime from using their chemical supply. the retaliation against the russians marks the first time the u.s. has launched a direct attack on syrian forces, and it's likely going to cause conflict between u.s. and russia, who president trump hoped to improve relations with. u.s. officials say russians and allies were warned ahead of the strike to prevent any

casualties, and it appears russia did tip off their ally, the assad regime. their aircraft was removed before the attack and the information minister released a statement within the last hour dismissing the strike in which he called it limited and expected. >> all right. jonathan vigliotti in london. thank you. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk to florida senator marco rubio, a frequent critic of the president, about the missile strike in syria. just as the u.s. missiles were hitting the syrian air base, president trump was wrapping up the first day of a two-day summit with the leader of china. mr. trump is hosting president xi jinping at his florida resort. he said if china doesn't expert more pressure on north korea on its nuclear ambitions, the u.s. will act alone. and the senate is expected to confirm neil gorsuch as the next justice of the supreme court later today. yesterday senate democrats tried to block his nomination.

that's when senate republicans imposed the so-called nuclear option, changing the senate rules so gorsuch would be confirmed with the senate vote. the investigative committee of congressman devin nunez could drag on for months, maybe longer. because of that, nunez announced yesterday he was stepping down from leading in the inquiry regarding the russian interference of the 2016 election. the issue is whether nunez revealed classified information after his visit to the white house two weeks ago. >> but i think chairman nunez wants to make sure this is not a distraction to a very important investigation, so he wants to go clear himself while this investigation continues on without any kinds of distractions. >> nunez calls the accusations baseless. and another victim of last month's terror attack outside british tourist died. police say the romanian touret who plunged into the river who tried escaping the attack died

say it was no ordinary joy ride. a chase began after an ambulance was stolen. the 18-year-old man behind the wheel faces an array of charges. dozens of people in indiana are forced to evacuate because of a natural gas fire. it erupted last night in a town northeast of indianapolis when a car struck a pipeline. power was knocked out in the area. the four people who were in the car are hospitalized with burns. and he was known as the merchant of venom, but don rickles' insults always left his victims laughing. rickles died yesterday in los angeles. jim axelrod looks back at his comedic career. >> reporter: don rickles never put the knife in anyone's back. he hit them right between the eyes. an equal opportunity offender, no one was immune from his ridicule. no race, no religion.
