ing. >> good morning from the studio 57 newsroom good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. the u.s. unleashed, quote, the mother of all bombs. it was dropped on an isis target in afghanistan. as many as 36 isis militants were killed according to an afghan official. no civilians were harmed. the u.s. says a weapon contained 11 tons of explosives hit a cave complex used by militants. roxana sabari has the latest. good morning, roxana. >> good morning, wendy. afghanistan ministry says the bomb killed several caves where isis was based but it's raising questions here and abroad. >> we're very, very proud of our military. >> president trump praised the armed forces after the attack in

east afghanistan. the mother of all bombs carrying nearly 11 tons of explosives hit a cave complex used by isis, the most powerful nonnuclear device. >> we have the greatest military in world and they've done a great job as usual. >> the commander in afghanistan was to spare afghan soldiers and their american advisers from having to go into the cave. democratic senator elizabeth warren questioned the timing. >> i want to hear more from the generals out in the field about why they thought this was the right bomb and this was the right moment. >> experts believe the u.s. could also be sending a message to the syrian regime and north korea. >> that no matter how much you hide or dig, we can still get you. >> while the pentagon said the strike has been in the works for months, it comes as north korea is considering a major weapons test of its own in celebration of its founder. in an interview with the "associated press," north

korea's vice foreign minister accused president trump of raising tensions in the region. he warned that his nation would not keep its arms crossed in the attempt of a strike by the u.s. vice president mike pence is set to travel to south korea this weekend. the white house says talks about north korea are on the agenda. wendy? >> roxana saberi. thanks. the director of the cia mike pompeo is taking aim at wikileaks, accusing it of working with russia to interfere with a u.s. presidential election. nancy cordes has the latest. >> it's time to call out wikileaks for what it really is. >> the cia director did not hold back, accusing wikileaks of working directly with the russian government to release e-mails stolen from the democratic party and the clinton campaign. >> our intelligence committee determined that the russian intelligence used wikileaks to

release data of u.s. victims through cyber operations against the democratic national committee. >> pompeo argued it's time to stop giving wikileaks a platform. >> wikileaks, i love wikileaks. >> something president trump did routinely on the campaign trail. >> wikileaks also just released an e-mail with bill clinton's chief of staff. >> wikileaks reminded pompeo he himself publicized their material last year. in a tweet he says he does not remember sending. wikileaks founder julian assange has insisted he's not pro-russia. but pompeo argued it's the u.s. disclosures like last month's release of thousands of sensitive cia documents that are making the world less safe. >> we can no longer allow assange colleagues the latitude to use free-speech values against us.

to give them the space to crush us with misappropriated secrets is a perversion of what our great constitution stands for. >> it's noted this is the first speech mike pompeo gave since being named iowa director by president trump. he initially rejected the claims about russian hacking but we're told the cia did brief the white house before pompeo spoke. in syria, evacuations from four besieged areas are under way today. two of the villages are pro-government. the other two are controlled by anti-assad rebels. relief workers in the war-torn nation are trying to remove more than 10,000 residents to safety. their efforts come against the backdrop of an errant u.s. air strike earlier this week. that bombing killed 18 syrian fighters, all of them aligned with the u.s. in gwinnett county, georgia, two police officers were fired after cell phone video showed

them kicking and punching a man at a traffic stop. he was handcuffed on the ground when he was kicked in the head, but another video later emerged in what happened earlier. in that video the officer punches the man in the face. >> quite frankly, i'm very upset. i'm mad. i'm sick that the second video showed up. >> reporter: the department has launched a criminal investigation. the attorney for the man forcibly removed from a united express flight indicated his client will be suing the carrier. thomas demetrio at a news conference yesterday also suggested passenger david dao will sue the city of chicago which employs the officers who removed him from the airplane. it left him with a broken nose, broken teeth, and concussion, a

anguish. >> what happened to my dad should have never happened to anyone. >> united issued a statement afterward, again apologizing for the incident. 20 roller coasters were stuck 100 feet in the air. it happened yesterday at six flags america in largo, outside of washington. firefighters used a bucket truck rescue the riders from the coaster jinx. they were fortunately upright when the coaster stalled. >> we thought it was some sort of joke because it was one of those rides. when we realized it wasn't a joke and we were actually stuck, that's when we started freaking out. >> some two dozen people were stuck on the same ride in 2014. las vegas firefighters were called to knock down a blaze at one of the city's biggest hotels. a small fire erupted last night on the roof of the bellagio. part of the las vegas strip was briefly closed. the fire was controlled within an hour. coming up on the "morning news," a possible habitat far, far away.
