the right wing commentator. just a few hours ago she canceled her speech. she was vowing to hold the talk despite the cancellation. now she's cancelling it saying she faced threats of violence. she said she didn't have the support of local law enforcement. she said quote it's a sad day for free speech. uc berkeley responded saying the threats of violence mentioned by coulter are the reason the university canceled the event in the first place. campus officials sigh that's why they tried to move her speech to a new date and venue. they're holding a news conference at 1:30 today to talk about it. >> a lawyer representing 15 tenants is seeking damages following the blaze if oakland. >> at 9:00 this morning the lawyer representing 15

plaintiffs from the fatal fire filed a lawsuit against the owner saying they were living in deplorable conditions. this mother of three describes what it was like to escape the fire. >> all i heard was people banging on walls. all our neighbors was just banging on walls saying fire, fire, fire. >> she says the slum like environment his clients were living in was the blame for the fire. >> this is probably one of the worst properties in oakland. >> the lawsuit filed against the owner said the people who lived there had to deal with a mold infestation problem and raw sewage leaks. >> feces from the mice and rats. >> it also had a defective fire alarm system, and severe defects. >> every plaintiff and tenant

we've talked to has stated emphatically that no fire alarm rang during the fire. >> the owner of the building received several complaints from the tenants for years and did little to nothing about them. >> it's killing people. that's all i want to tell him, me and my kids we almost died in that building. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. in oakland jacky ward, kpix5. >> the attorney representing the fire victims made a plea to bay area housing departments asking them to focus on maintenance of all living spaces. if city allocated $700,000 for fire victims. >> today marks 20 years since a deadly fire at an east palo alto home. some say it's the single largest unsolved murder case. 11 people were pulled from the fire. nine people died, five of those

were children. investigators say the fire was intentionally started by someone who poured gasoline all over the cars parked at the home. on this 20th anniversary they're hoping someone comes forward with any information. on saturday friends and family of the victims will be holding a memorial service to remember the lives lost. >> a man accused of a deadly shooting rampage in oakland made an appearance before a judge this morning. this was the first time that we've seen the suspect in five years. >> reporter: he appeared in court today with shoulder length graying hair and a rather friendly demeanor. he did not enter a plea. his lawyer says that decision has not yet been made. >> we don't know at this point. we're going to come back on tuesday and take stuff up then. >> it's been five years since the shooting in oakland. the suspect is charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. the shooting happened in april

of 2012. he had been a nursing student at the campus, but had dropped out several months prior. ecame wanting -- he came wanting his tuition refunded. he was told an administrator wasn't in the office he opened fire killing six women and one man. the case was put on hold when the judge ruled he had a mental illness. he's been at the state mental hospital in napa ever since. >> commonly when someone has been incompetent and they are restored to competence sip based on medications and other treatments when they are restored they'll commonly be kept at the hospital in order to maintain their competence until the case is resolved. >> his next hearing is here at alameda county court on tuesday morning at 9:00. >> a live look at dublin right now. it is a gloomy day all over the

bay area. you can tell it's a little windy out there too. and you probably notice a slight drizzle if you've been outside today. >> i heard collective groans from people coming into work today. they're like we're done, this is too much. and you know what you're right. this is pretty much the end of the rain season here in the bay area. and we've had a great rain season. not picking up any precipitation even though there's low level moisture. it's all associated with a very deep enhanced marine level that we picked up about near an .1-inch of rain in the bay area. nothing yet in the san jose area. look at the golden gait bridge the pavement was wet -- golden gate bridge the pavement was wet a little earlier. the winds are problematic. i want to talk about how long the clouds linger those details coming up later in the newscast.

called for its removal. >> a new battle over sanctuary cities today as president trump approaches the one hundredth day of his presidency. the white house is also announcing a huge new tax plan. >> reporter: treasury secretary announced the white house's plan to reform the tax code. >> the president's objective is creating economic growth. >> the proposal would cut the corporate tax rate from 35% down to 15%. todays announcement is just an outline. the white house will present the final plans by august. they're still figuring out how to pay for the cuts without adding to the deficit. >> the economic plan under trump will grow the economy and will create massive amounts of revenues, trillions of dollars in additional revenue. >> the secretary has been meeting with house and senate republican leaders and all sides are hopeful it will pass.

>> time for a check of our weather. >> now we had such a sensational rain season that boy we have to kind of applaud that that we had enough rain the end the draw. this time last year 3/4 of the state of california was under severe drought status. not speaking of any kind of precipitation because the low level moisture trapped to the ground all associated with that deep marine level. we have picked up nearly a tenth an inch of rain in the mountainous areas. other goose eggs in san jose. it was wet earlier at the golden gate bridge. temperatures in the 60s to 65 in san jose. the winds have been very problematic around the rim of the bay today. 10 to 14 miles per hour. they're now 14 in vallejo.
