newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in the pacific northwest where may day demonstrations protesting president trump's immigration policies turned violent. in washington, the capital, in washington state rather, capital olympia police said what they described as members of a mob threw bottles and to fire rocks overseas. nine people were arrested and charged with felony riot. [ gunshot ] in portland, police used flash grenades to break up a protest they said had become a riot. more than two dozen people were arrested. several businesses suffered damage. tens of thousands protested across the country. this afternoon president trump is scheduled to speak by phone with russian president vladimir putin. last month mr. trump said

u.s.-russia relations may be at an all time low. during the campaign mr. trump praised putin, one of several authoritarian leaders he had good things to say about comments that drawn sharp criticism. >> reporter: topics on the agenda of president trump's scheduled call with the russian leader will include the war in syria and missile testing in north korea. the president is also taking heat for saying in an interview yesterday he would be honored to meet north korean leader kim jong-un. trump is due to speak with vladimir putin later today. the civil war in syria and kim jong-un are strong topics. >> people tried to take his power away. he was able to do it.
