live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. now at noon, an arrest in the murder of an east bay woman. her body found months ago inside her burned out home. good afternoon. i'm michelle griego. kenny is on assignment. new at noon, alameda county investigators revealed new details in the death of a castro valley woman. >> reporter: the sheriff's office says the suspect

confessed to killing the castro valley woman. the horrifying scene rocked the castro valley community. the body of a newly widowed woman found in her burned out home. >> this was a break in the case that we needed to make sure he got charged. >> reporter: 36-year-old -- confessed to the murder while locked up on an unrelated sexual assault charge. surveillance video shows the suspect walking around the neighborhood, randomly picking homes to burglarize. according to alameda county, the victim confronted the suspect. he stabbed her and set the home on fire to cover it up. >> the district attorney determined that the fire was related to torture. >> the sheriff's office has

uncovered evidence, including the vehicle involved. the hunt for the suspect was months long. >> it's very disturbing to the entire neighborhood, the family, our detectives to see something so horrific. and we're glad we were able to make sure this person is never going to commit any other crimes outside of jail again. the suspect is facing charges for murder and torture. the torture charge could have him facing the death penalty. in napa county, a plane crash near lake berryessa. this is near the pleasure cove marina and both people on the plane have died. this is a live look from chopper 5. you can see the plane there. officials say kpix 5 that the

crash scene is not accessible by land. crime on muni is at the lowest level it's been in years. anne makovec explains. >> reporter: good news for muni riders. crime on the system from pickpockets to assaults are at a four year low. 3.8 crimes per 100,000 miles. crime hit the highest point in the last seven years in october, 2013, with 12.2 crimes. >> we have been putting a lot of effort and resources into making sure that we're addressing the riders' concerns of safety on muni. >> including concerning arranging for more police coverage. the latest rider survey showed only 55% of riders feel safe on the system. >> we want to see crime going down. and not just this year but year

over year. >> reporter: the san francisco advocacy group -- >> reporter: we really need to think about the most vulnerable communities. what is safe to me might not be safe for a senior or a person or a disability or a parent who is putting their kid on muni for the first time alone. >> reporter: a swarm of 50 teenagers rushed a bart train in oakland in april and robbed seven people. the latest stats show crime on bart is up. 2.24 crimes per million riders versus -- muni has 8 to 12 cameras in each vehicle. >> that helps us to identify suspects when incidents happen on board and get the information to the police department as soon as possible. >> many of bart's cameras are not set up to record. in san francisco, anne makovec,

kpix 5. bart may turn to muni for solutions on how to handle fare evaders. they've cost the agency about $25 million annually. and station agents haven't issued a single ticket to fare jumpers under age 18. that's because of a new law. >> they know the gate agent will just sit in the booth. that's fine. they have a big job to do which i would not want to do. nobody is going to do anything about it. >> bart is considering a similar procedure as muni. tickets do not go on a juvenile's permit record. the city of san francisco is stepping up efforts to tackle homelessness. in the past hour, mayor ed lee -- with the ceo of the nonprofit called tipping point.

it comes after tipping point pledged to donate $100 million to the city to combat homelessness. the ceo had this to say about the chronic problem. it's unacceptable that in a region with such creativity, wealth, and generosity, that thousands are living on the streets. homelessness is a humanitarian crisis and the issue of our times. explosive new information about national security adviser michael flynn. kenneth craig said it's come to light as congress gets ready to hear information about the link to the election. >> reporter: president obama advised president trump not to hire michael flynn during the first meeting at the white house. the obama administration fired him in 2014 because of mismanagement and temperament

issues. the development comes on the same day that sally yates testifies on capitol hill about alleged ties between russia and the trump campaign. yates warned the white house that flynn was not forth coming with the vice president about his contacts with the russian ambassador to the u.s. president trump tweeted a question for senate lawmakers. he wrote ask sally yates under oath if she knows how classified information got in the newspapers after she explained it to white house counsel. >> congress began investigating after it was concluded that vladimir putin ordered the cyber hacking of the u.s. election. >> reporter: condoleezza rice supports the investigation. >> i'm furious for the russians. but let's not give him the satisfaction that he has caused

roll. >> he's a former investment banker who has never run for office before. with the left and the right of french politics rejected by the voters, he came up the middle in a win that can only be called a landslide. he said he understood the anger of those who supported his far right opponent and would work for them too. it's hard to see how the principles of marine le pen's principles can be accommodated. the french chose moderation over extremism. in the french system. voters are given two ballots, each with a candidate's name on it. they vote with one and throw the other away. trash bags were full of rejected scraps of paper with marine le pen's name on them.

getting pregnant. and that's when amber came to a realization -- >> one day fourth period out on -- just hanging out with my friends, what are these people doing? what am i doing? >> she answered her own question by getting college bound grades and becoming a school leader. she'll be a freshman in the fall. >> these things happen and she's got this great understanding that in spite of what happened, she keeps the train moving forward. >> she closes with this reflection. i am free to embrace who i am and who i am destined to be. >> i believe that i am destined to be successful. but i think that i'll make a big impact on the world. and i feel likes the something to do with juvenile justice in order to reach out to the kids that need to be helped.
