york city, i'm dimarco morgan. captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs it's wednesday, may 10th, 2017. this is the "cbs morning news." president trump fires fbi director james comey in the midst of an investigation into the trump campaign's ties with russia. what led up to the ouster, criticism from the president's own party, and a push for reaction from the opposition. >> this is partly a deeply troubling pattern from the trump administration. >> well, good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york.
4:01 am
good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. for only the second time in u.s. history, the director of the fbi has been fired. in a stunning turn of events, president trump fired james comey, raising questions about the president's motive and the future of the investigation into possible ties between the trump campaign and russia and also increasing calls for a special prosecutor. the president cited comey's actions in the hillary clinton e-mail inquiry. comey's deputy andrew mccabe has been named the interim prosecutor. fbi director. one republican senator jeff blake of arizona tweeted that he can't find an acceptable rationale for the timing of comey's firing, and this morning all democratic senators have been asked to be at their desks when the senate convenes. "the new york times" puts the president's letter dismissing comey on the front page. his firing is dominating headlines this morning. hena daniels is here in new york with more.

hena, good morning.g, annmarie. president trump is hosting the russian foreign minister at the white house today as his administration begins its search for a new fbi director. comey's firing yesterday triggered an overwhelming reaction on capitol hill especially from democrats who say a special prosecutor should now be appointed to oversee ongoing investigations into the russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. >> with all due respect, you're making a big mistake. >> senate minority leader chuck schumer was among the first to question the timing of president trump's decision to fire fbi director james comey tuesday. the same man leading the bureau's investigation into whether members of his campaign colluded with russia during the presidential election. >> were these investigations getting too close to home for the president? >> the president immediately fired back on twitter last night, writing in part, crying
4:03 am
chuck schumer stated recently i no longer have confidence in combmy and then act so indignant. >> you're talking about becoming confident. >> these become more famous than me. >> president trump sent this dismissal letter to comey yesterday writing, while i greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that i'm not under investigation, i nevertheless concur with the judgment of the department of justice, that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau. the trump administration maintains its decision was mainly based on the handling of the hillary clinton investigation. comey appeared before the senate panel last week to discuss the case. >> it makes me mildly nauseous to think we might have had some impact on the election. >> wild senator richard burr said it's confusion majority leader mitch mcconnell says he
4:04 am
looked forward to a full, fair, and timely process to fulfill the position. comey had been set to testify on capitol hill tomorrow over the election. he's no longer expected to appear, though, his testimony could be pushed back to next week. anne-marie? >> hena daniels here in new york. thank you so much, hena. well, until his firing, tuesday's story line surrounding comey centered around the investigation of hillary clinton's primary e-mail server. the fbi had to correct comey's testimony from last week in which he said clinton's closee aide huma abedin sent dozens of classified e-mails to her husband anthony weaner. they say she only passed a small number for the purpose of printing off documents and only two contained classified information. well, cbs news chief washington correspondent john dickerson said the firing will increase calls for an
4:05 am
independent prosecutor to run an investigation into the trump campaign, russia, and the election. >> this is likely to ratchet up even higher the partisan combat over the investigation into the russian efforts to influence the 2016 election. it was already high enough this week after parties paired off over why it took so long for the president to fire former national security adviser michael flynn. now democrats will renew their calls for a special prosecutor, and they've already been joined by republican john mccain. the argument is that only someone free to investigate without being fired or the fear of being fired can do the job. this will send shock waves through the fbi, put a cloud over the investigation if after independent one is not initiated, and it can lower the trust in american institutions which analysts say was the russian intent in the meddling in election all along. >> well, some are comparing comey's firing to richard nixon's 1973 saturday night massacre. president nixon wanted the
4:06 am
special prosecutor investigating watergate, archibald cox, fired, but the attorney general refused and resigned. the richard nixon library responded to commentary that comey's firing was knicks on yan. in a tweet they tweeted, fun fact, president nixon never fired the director of the fbi. well ahead on "cbs this morning" more on the fired of fbi director james comey. today president trump plans to meet with russia's top dip plea mat. the white house meeting with sergey lavrov is the highest level face-to-face meeting the president has ever had with a public official. the syrian war is likely to top the agenda. the trump administration has announced planned to arm syria's kurdish fighters to help recapture the isis stronghold of raqqah, syria.
