live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. now, new developments in the concert terror attack in manchester, england. ice is now claiming responsibility and authorities have identified the suspected suicide bomber. good afternoon. i'm kenny choi. i'm michelle griego. the bombing killed 22 people

that were leaving an ariana grande concert and most of them are young people. reporter teri okita is live in manchester with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: this was a pop concert with a lot of young people in attendance and officials said of the dozens injured, 12 were under the age of 16. [ sound of crashing ] oh my god! >> reporter: are ariana grande fans were starting to leave when the bomb went off. [ screaming ] the crowd began to panic and ran for the manchester arena. >> we heard a massive -- massive bomb from the corner of the arena and people were running in different directions. >> i started to run. i didn't know what to do. >> among the dead, georgina callander and 8-year-old, saffie roussos. >> this attack stands out for the appalling signaling cowardice deliberately targeting innocent and defenseless

queen elizabeth expressed her deepest sympathies to other victims and complemented the people of manchester for responding with what she calls humanity and compassion. i'm teri okita from manchester. back to you. we are more details about the 22 people killed in the manchester terror attack are dozens more, many children, were injured. jonathan vigliotti reports many are still missing. >> reporter: an 18-year-old college student is the first victim publicly identified in the manchester terror attack. georgina callander was said to be a huge fan of singer, ariana grande and there were photos of the two of them taken together two years ago. 8-year-old saffie roussos died at her school principal called her a beautiful little girl. charlotte campbell is trying to find her 15-year-old daughter, olivia. >> i've tried all the hospital areas and no one has seen her, yet. i'm waiting for a phone call from the police. silent -- [ siren ] >> reporter: she was last seen with her friend who was injured and taken to the hospital. officials said 59 victims were hospitalized and some reportedly paralyzed by shrapnel.

the capacity crowd inside manchester arena was disorderly. >> everyone was pushing and shoving. >> reporter: karen ford was inside with her 13-year-old daughter when the bomb went off and she said her husband panicked when he couldn't find her in the aftermath. >> for about 10 minutes we were looking for each other and they thought we were dead. >> reporter: then, there was comfort on the streets of manchester and now there is resolved. despite the attack on the community's youngest and most vulnerable, the manchester mayor, andy burnham. >> these are children and young people and their families. it is sad that they chose to terrorize and kill them. >> reporter: we don't know how many are missing. jonathan vigliotti, manchester, england. >> singer on -- singer are ariana grande put her to work on hold and tweeted, groping from the bottom up my heart. i'm so, so sorry.

i don't have words. security is stepped up across the u.s. with heavily armed police patrolling new york times square and others frequented by tourists and locals. the primary concern is a similar bombing of a soft target and experts said it's impossible to protect every possible target and especially difficult to stop an attack that may have been planned for weeks or months. >> whoever did this, they were very sophisticated in both the location and the timing. >> additional security measures are in place in cleveland. tonight, 20,000 fans are expected to watch game four of the nba eastern conference finals. san francisco police said there were no known threats to the city and law enforcement will monitor the situation. new at noon, the wife of and alameda county sheriff's deputy was in court to answer charges from the crash that killed a toddler.

and matakovich has the story. >> reporter: today, the wife of and alameda county sheriff's deputy pleaded not guilty to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and dui. she faces up to 11 years in prison for a suspected dui crash last september that killed a 3-year-old boy. her face was hidden behind her lower and mirrored glass as she pleaded not guilty during the arraignment. police said she was on drugs when her suv slammed into the back of the car of eliza dunn's mother on the shoulder in san marone. she was released on bail the next day and that was not her first dui run in with the law. three months earlier she was arrested on suspicion of dui and child endangerment involving her own child and pleaded not guilty and was given a provisional driver's license days before the deadly crash. >> they are investigating to make sure that we make the right charging decisions.

>> reporter: most recently, they said she was found lying on a sidewalk in pleasanton for which she faces charges of public intoxication. she turned herself in on the felony charges a few days later and her bail is set at $3 million and her next court appearance is june 15. and mcabee, kpix5. breaking news. police said a suspect has escaped from custody. the person was in custody for two hours before getting away and it's not clear why the person was detained. more details i was we get them. in san leandro, the search is on for an armed robber that shot the restaurant employee earlier this morning. an employee in san leandro said the suspect stormed a restaurant around 3:00 and demanded cash and as he left the restaurant, he opened fire, hitting an employee in the leg and the injuries are not life- threatening. a young driver is under arrest while being treated for injuries after he led police on

an early morning chase in marin county. he was in a stolen car and was chased across the richmond san rafael bridge. just before 4:00 a.m., he slammed the car into a storage container at the fruitvale exit off 880 and there is no word on the suspects condition. two were taken to the hospital after a fire broke off -- broke out. brighton avenue at 4:00 this morning, the fire was put out but five people are not displaced. displaced. and assistant preschool teacher an assistant preschool teacher is arrested after calling in a bomb threat to a san francisco school. pablo munoz works at leport montessori school and he left a message about a bomb at the school. no devices were found but the voicemails were traced back to him. president donald trump is set to meet with the pope today. the president and first lady arrived in rome a little while ago after wrapping up a two day visit to israel. trump said he is looking

forward to speaking with the pope about how christian teachings can, quote, put the world on a path to justice, freedom and peace. in vatican city, 1000 extra officers are on duty today and yesterday, and unattended bag was found near the vatican causing chaos, but it did not contain any explosives. the president faces new questions about involvement into possible ties with russia. he asked two top intelligence officials to deny there was collusion with russia. as seth lemmon reports, they refused. >> reporter: the director of national intelligence arrived to testify for the senate today. cbs news confirmed a washington post report that the president asked coats and nsa director, michael rogers, to publicly deny the existence of any evidence of collusion as part of the fbi investigation of russian interference in the 2016 election. >> on this topic and other topics, i don't feel it's

appropriate to characterize discussions and conversations with the president. >> democrats that it's more evidence that president donald trump is interfering in the investigation. >> white house seems to have little respect for the principles of rule of law. >> reporter: on the other side of capitol hill, the house intelligence committee is listening to testimony from the former cia director who led the investigation into russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. >> there was sufficient basis of information and intelligence that required further investigation by the bureau to determine whether or not u.s. persons were actively conspiring and colluding with russian officials. >> reporter: meanwhile, the hearing with fired fbi director, james comey, is on hold. he requested to speak with robert mueller first. mueller is the special counsel appointed to lead the investigation into russian collusion. seth lemmon for cbs news on capitol hill.
