57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm hena daniels in for anne-marie green. isis claimed responsibility for saturday's deadly attack in the heart of london. british police detained a number of people in early morning raids, and on sunday arrested 12 others at an apartment where it's believed one of the attackers lived. at least seven people were killed when three men used a rented van to run over people on the london bridge. they then raced into nearby restaurants stabbing people before they were shot dead by police. their identities have not been released. 48 others were wounded. 21 remain in critical condition. meg oliver is at london bridge with the latest. meg, good morning. >> reporter: hena, good morning. it was a bloody attack that shocked london, but as you can see behind me, london bridge has reopened one lane of traffic, and there's a steady stream of

commuters making their way to work. they're walking by this makeshift memorial where people have been leaving cards and flowers for the victims, and then there are the chilling headlines like this, "massacre in the market." authorities in the uk continue their hunt for the accomplices rounding up two addresses in the region in connection with saturday's terror attacks. on sunday police swarmed an apartment building in a suburb, taking four men and several women into custody. a resident there said he recognized one of the three men killed by police after allegedly carrying out the attacks as his neighbor. >> he had a young wife from what i could see and two children, a toddler and a recently born baby. >> reporter: the suspected terrorists used a van to mow down pedestrians on london bridge before crashing the van and stabbing people in the borough market.

>> i could see pure evil eyes. >> reporter: in the end, a number of local people and tourists would be dead, including christine archie bard of canada. this would come two weeks after they killed people at the ariana grande concert about four hours away in manchester. the pop star went back to manchester and took the stage during an emotional event, raising money for the victims. back in the u.s. in his first public comment on the recent attack, president trump vowed sunday to protect americans from terrorists. >> we knew our resolve, stronger than ever before, to protect the united states and its allies from a vial enemy. >> reporter: the department of homeland security says there's no credible threat to the u.s. at this time. we're learning new details about the victims in this horrific attack.

canadian christine archibald who was hit on the bridge with his fiance, he held her in his arms as she died. she was only 30. >> has the terror alert been raised in london? >> reporter: no, it hasn't. it will remain severe, meaning another attack is highly likely. however, the prime minister is holding a meeting, a security meeting later today. that topic is likely to come up for discussion. >> meg, we see a lot of foot traffic behind you. are people nervous as they make their way around london today? >> reporter: hena, absolutely. everybody that i've talked to say they're looking over their shoulder, they're a little bit cautious, however, they're defiant, and they're not going to let this stop them from getting back to work and returning to their normal activities. >> meg oliver live in london. thank you so much, meg. a vigil will be held in

london this evening for those involved in the attack. charlie d'agata has more on the victim and efforts to stop the attack. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reporter: the rampage that left scores of wounded in its wake may have happened in the heart of london, but the victims hail from around the globe. am nad yan and were amok theirst a canadian and a frenchman were among the first confirmed deaths. australian candice hedge was stabbed in the neck while eating dinner with her boyfriend. american, british, german, and spanish are among the wounded. survivor accounts paint a gruesome picture of eight minutes that unfolded. gerard vowls said he just left the pub when he heard screaming. >> that's when i saw the three terrorists. they ran up and stabbed a woman, they repeatedly stabbed her, all

three of them. >> all three of them. >> when they stabbed her, they skreechle screamed "allah." >> reporter: they did what they could, threw everything at them. >> i picked up a stool, a glass. >> reporter: the attackers were brought down in a hail of bullets. >> the cops came over. so these attackers were surrounded by the police, and they shut them down. >> reporter: britain's emergency medical teams responded quickly, but the sheer number of victims suffering such horrific injuries meant spreading patients out to five area hospitals. london mayor sadiq cakhan described the attack and condemned it.

president trump said he'll do whatever is necessary to protect the united states. earlier he criticized london's mayor while trying to reassure residents about an increased police presence that there is no reason to be alarmed. president trump tweeted we must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. if we don't get smart, it will only get worse. the mayor's office responded that he has more important things to do than to reply to the president's ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes his remarks out of context. in washington this week congress reconvenes today and the president plans to spotlight infrastructure week. his efforts to achieve $1 trillion for roadways and water ways, but the highlight is likely to be the scheduled testimony. of former fbi james comey before
