good morning from studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. top secret u.s. government report indicates russian hackers were able to breach a voting software supplier. just before last year's election. u.s. intelligence maintains the attacks did not affect the collection but the cyber attack described by the national security agency seems to go further than a previous assessment of russian hacking efforts. jeff pegues has the details. >> reporter: according to the nsa report the intercept hackers from russian military intelligence were trying to access voter registration information days before the election. the hackers stole user credentials from u.s. election software company in florida. they then used those credentials to send fake emails to 122 local

government officials, probably involved in the management of voter registration systems. those emails were sent just over a week before the november 8th election and were laced with malware. the report says the viruses tried to access election related hardware and software applications. access to voter registration records could have allowed the hackers to delete or change voter information. >> what was your initial reaction? >> shock and dismay. >> reporter: the description is similar to what we heard last year from secretary of state michele reagan. she learned in june russian hackers had been probing her states voter information. >> the feeling and reality of foreign entity and outside intruders, if you will, coming into our state and wanting to mess with our election system. >> reporter: russian president vladimir putin has consistently denied any government

involvement in the hacks. but last week he did suggest private russian hackers who are patriotically minded could have participated. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. a federal government contractor has been charged with leaking classified material to an unidentified news outlet. leigh winner appeared in court yesterday charged with copying classified documents and mailing them to a reporter. a detention hearing is scheduled for thursday. overseas british police are trying to explain why they dropped an investigation into one of the men suspected of carrying out the deadly attack in center london. khuram shazad butt was a known radical islamist who tried to recruit local youngsters but authorities had no evidence he was planning an attack. meg oliver is in london this morning.

>> reporter: good morning. more than two days after terror attack police still have the market blocked off. they are letting people in who work in the area. another police search is under way in the town about five miles from here. as the hunt for accomplices continue authorities in the uk confirm one of the london dridge attackers they identified was on their radar. sources tell cbs news khuram shazad butt a naturalized british citizen born in pakistan was known to british intelligence due to his associates with radical islamist. this resident said she reported him to police for recruiting children. >> he said to me because the kids need to be safe. safe from what? >> reporter: the other attacker rachid redouane is of libyan descent. he was not known to politician. police are working to confirm

the identity of the third attacker. all three were shot dead by police officers within minutes of mowing down pedestrians on the bridge and stabbing others at random. as the investigation continues to unfold british citizens of all faiths are coming together to denounce the horrific attack. london's mayor sadiq khan led a vigil of hundreds yesterday not far from the site of the attack. >> as a proud and patriotic british muslim, i say this. you do not commit these disgusting acts in my name. >> reporter: muslims living in the northern english city of leads also spoke out. >> we have a wider role to play. >> reporter: more than 130 imams and religious leaders won't give funeral prayers for the perpetrators of saturday's attack. british media reported a dozen molotov cocktails were found inside the van. the attackers carried out the

attack with. police have released 12 people they took into custody without charge. a moment of silence will be held today at 11:00 in honor of the victims. meg oliver in london. president trump intensified his twitter attack against london's mayor. he said the mayor offered a pathetic excuse and had to think fast on his no reason to be alarmed statement. on sunday the president mischaracterized the remarks by suggesting it referred to the attack itself when in fact it concerned the increased police presence. >> we won't allow anybody whether it's donald trump or anybody else to divide our communities. >> british prime minister theresa may said sadiq khan is doing a good job and wrong to say anything else. president trump will not invoke executive privilege to stop fired fbi director james comey from testifying before congress.

comey is scheduled to testify before the senate intelligence committee thursday. the much anticipated appearance will focus on comey's meeting with mr. trump and allegations that the president tried to get comey to drop the russian investigation. we'll have full coverage of james comey's testimony before the senate intelligence committee. it begins thursday at 10:00 eastern, 9:00 central right here on cbs. widespread wind damage is reported in austin, texas. a string of powerful and fast-moving storms blew through the texas capital yesterday. over an inch of rain poured down in just 15 minutes. hail and powerful winds were reported knocking down power lines and trees. bill cosby's sexual assault trial resumes today in pennsylvania. jurors heard opening statements yesterday, cosby is charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman more than a decade ago. the first witness was another woman who claimed cosby assaulted her.

prosecutors are trying to show his behavior fit a pattern. his tv daughter was there to support cosby. >> i don't take these charges lightly. i don't condone sexual assault in any way, shape or form. but at the end of the day our court system is set up and the judge said plenty of times, you're innocent until you're proven guilty. >> more than 60 women claim cosby sexually assaulted them. authorities in orlando, florida are trying to figure out why a fired worker at an awning factory shot and killed five people before taking his own life. the gunman john robert neumann an army veteran was let go from the factory in april. he returned yesterday with a semiautomatic pistol and opened fire. singling out the people he shot. he killed himself just as police arrived. apple unveiled a voice controlled speaker at its annual

"the washington post" reports growing corporate backing for the climate treaty president trump abandoned. apple, amazon, facebook, google joined a public campaign called we're still in. they are pledging support for the paris deal despite the u.s. withdrawal announced by the president last week. the "new york times" says the supreme court will hear a case involving cell phone information. at issue is whether prosecutors need warrants to get phone records showing locations of users. lower courts have ruled that they don't. our top story this morning, according to a top secret government intelligence report russian hackers attacked a u.s. voting software supplier just days before last year's election. they were trying to get voter registration information. the report was published online monday by the website intercept. u.s. intelligence says the attack did not impact the election outcome. a moment of silence will be held across the united kingdom this morning for the victims of saturday's london belligerent attack. one of the attackers khuram shazad butt was known to associate with radical extremists and reported for trying to recruit children. another identified attacker was not known to police. harvard revoked admissions
