intelligence committee but to the special counsel. >> attorney general jeff sessions is set to face tough questions before the senate intelligent committee tomorrow about his role in comey's firing. >> he said he was involved in the firing of comey and the president said he was fired because of his involvement with russia. how does that fit in? >> last week he said for reasons he could not discuss in a nonclassified setting. whether the attorney general will testify in public or behind closed doors is still unclear. well, comey testified that sessions did not respond when he told him he didn't want to be alone with the president again because the president reportedly made inappropriate requests about the russia investigation. anne-marie, that's just a sampling of the many answers sessions will have to provide under oath. >> it ought to be very interesting. weijia jiang in washington. thank you so much, weijia. well, it was one year ago today that a gunman opened fire

in a gay nightclub in orlando, killing 49 people. omar mateen fired his first shots around 2:00 a.m. last call at the pulse nightclub's latin night. this morning's solemn ceremonies began at the same time, marking one year since the first mass shooting in recent history. the central florida city is marking the anniversary with orlando united day including four services to remember the victims. kenneth craig is in orlando. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, anne-marie. quite a large crowd gathered at the club early this morning for the first of the day's convenience. events. it was a private tribute for family members and survivors, marking one year since a lone gunman walked into the club and shattered so many lives.

these four mothers could never have predicted how their worlds would collide, but over the past year, they've built a special bond over their children. >> our kids are angels. they put us together. >> you're connected in an unimaginable way that nobody else shares. >> something special, beautiful. >> reporter: they formed this support group in the wake of the pulse nightclub massacre when each one of their children went out for a night of fun and never came home. they were among 49 people who were gunned down at the orlando gay nightclub by omar mateen. 53 others were injured. >> she loved to go there. >> myra's daughter was just 20 years old. >> she was a leader. she knew where she was going. her plans were shattered. they were taken away from her. they were taken away from us. >> reporter: in the months since the attack, orlando has united, channeling that pain into acts

of love and kindness. the city "beautiful" as it's nicknamed is shown with true colors. laughter more often than tears. sharing their stories isn't easy, but it's one of the few things that have helped them move forward. >> strangers before? >> strangers before. >> family now. >> family now. >> reporter: and i just spoke with somebody who was inside this event early this morning for private event. she told me it was amazingly nice, it wasn't sad at all, and remarkably everybody seemed to be in good spirits. >> that is good news. kenneth craig in orlando. thank you so much, kenneth. overseas now u.s.-backed syrian forces captured another part of raqqah, isis's capital in syria. raqqah has been under isis control since 2014. a northwestern neighborhood was captured yesterday followed two

days of intense fighting. 12 isis gunmen were killed including a commander. the battle for the remainder of the city could be a major turning point in the war against the militants. a chinese airliner suffered a major issue. it returned last night. there was a gaping hole in the side of the engine casing and passengers said they heard a loud noise and smelled something burning. no one was injured. the defense is expected to begin presenting its case today in the bill cosby sexual assault trial. it's unclear if cosby will testify. the prosecution rested its case friday, five days after the trial opened. andrea constand said cosby drugged and molested her, charges he denies. another round of drenching storms is expected today in the minneapolis area. yesterday in blaine just north of minneapolis, a powerful storm included hail that made it look like a winter snowstorm.
