reports, their attorneys gave a preview of their defense strategies to come. >> reporter: the defendants appeared in court together for the first time together but didn't make a plea. s ofjail on $1 million garch bonds. >> perverse to try mr. harris or charge him for these crimes. >> reporter: max harris' attorney who we heard from today is blaming the building's owner. harris was a tenant in the ghost ship warehouse and helped plan the december 2 party that waunder y wafire broke out trapping people on a makeshift second floor. 36 people died. >> mr. harris was one of the many people there that was lucky enough to get out. he should be treated no differently than any other person who was struggling to pay the rent at that building. >> reporter: derick almena was the master tenant accused of turning it into a housing and

party space without the proper permits or safety systems. his attorney blames the landlord, the city and the utility provider and he says he expects almena will take the stand to testify in his own defense. >> when the trial finally comes, it will be a very conflicting and adversarial and hostile environment in court. >> reporter: supporters of max harris and family members of the victim appeared in court today where our cameras were not allowed. both defendants are expected in court again on july 7 where they may finally enter a plea. in oakland, anne makevoc, kpix 5. new at noon, we're learning the chp has made several arrests in the freeway beating of a lyft driver in san francisco earlier this year. kpix 5's allen martin is live in the newsroom with the latest. allen. >> reporter: michelle, the incident which happened in march involved a group of dirt bikers who surrounded and beat up that driver on highway 101. chp conducted a series of raids at four homes in san francisco

early wednesday morning. they arrested three men. 33-year-old johnson, 25-year- old rodriguez, and 19-year-old williams. you can see officers also removing dirt bikes from the homes. police say the suspects attacked him and left him with serious injuries. cell phone video captured it. the driver of the white car had a brush with the bikers and as he pulled over he was boxed in by the group and beaten severely. >> what was obviously very helpful were the videos that were taken bypassing motorists that were given to us. we reviewed those. we then talked, we went back then and talked to some of the officers involved, who previously seen some of these parties and were able to make positive identifications. insan orter: the three suspectsh cisco be hecounty jail, g they do face charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, battery and vandalism. police say they are still looking for a fourth suspect.

the judgment could set a legal precedent for whether or not it's a trial to tell someone to commit suicide. today was the first meeting of a bipartisan task force in washington on sexual violence. a roundtable was held on capitol hill to address problems investigating sexual assault including a backlog of untested rape kits. one woman announced that since 2010, 30 states have enacted some type of reform on rape kits. >> i know you join me in depending the jurisdictions that are taking responsibility for reforms and together, we are committed to raising awareness around those who have not. >> she says there is still a lot to be done. california representative jackie speier agrees. >> i wish we would have as many men in this room as we have women in this room because this

analyzing data. thanks to a unique program combining sports and technology. >> i just can't wait to see what the future holds. >> reporter: it's part of the oakland-based nonprofit cofounded last year by anwar mcqueen and alexis musante. it's called technology exposure with access to mentoring or team for short. >> we're on to something really transformational and powerful. >> reporter: they train young people of color to use sportscode, the same specialized software used by most team in the nba, wnba and in professional recognize buy and hockey. -- rugby and hockey. students learn to film games then use sportscode to edit the film clips to track statistics and analyze patterns in the players' and teams' performance. coaches use that information to adjust the game plan. so far, "team" has reached more than 500 students through its free programs and mentor ships. five students are completing their 10 months.
