headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump's scaled back travel ban took effect last night. citizens from six mostly muslim countries who already have visas are being allowed in the united states, but those who want new visas have to prove, among other thing, a close family relationship with someone in this country, and the list now includes fiancees. seth lemon is in washington with more on this ban. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. that's right. late last night the trump administration altered its definition of a bone na feed relationship to include fiancees. this modified scaled back version took effect without chaos we saw in january, but some details in the travel ban are already generating a new round of fights in the court. pockets of protesters gathered

in l.a. and new york thursday night moments after president trump's modified travel ban took effect. >> the entire idea is to ban muslims from coming into the nation as a whole. >> reporter: under the new conditions travelers will only be allowed in the u.s. if they can provide a bona fide family tie like a parent, spouse, child, or sibling. grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins do not qualify. fiances were a no, but last night got entered into the "okay to enter" column. >> it's because of safety and security of americans comes first. >> reporter: volunteer lawyers have now set up shops in major cities to assist travelers who may need legal help. >> there are so many layers here. they're not clear in the definition of what a bona fide definition means. >> reporter: just as what happened earlier this year with the travel ban, this one is already facing opposition in the kourtds.

hawaii last night filed an emergency motion asking a federal judge to clarify the scope of the policy. this person says the travel ban has made her friends in the middle east feel unwelcome. >> airports are a sign of being unwelcome and it can be very disruptive to those traveling. >> reporter: the department of security issued a statement saying u.s. customs and border protection officers are trained and prepared to professionally process travelers in accordance with the law. it will last for three months an on all refugees for four months. that puts us out to october, the same time the supreme court is set to hear arguments on the overall travel ban. anne-marie? >> seth lemon in washington. thank you so much, seth. while immigration and health care are ongoing issues in washington, the talk this morning concerns a presidential tweet. it was a personal attack on journalist mika brzezinski. the white house is defending the president, but both republicans and democrats expressed their dismay, describing the tweet as

unpresidential, vile, divisive, shameful. weijia jiang has our report. >> reporter: president trump lashed out at the anchors of msnbc's "morning joe," calls them low iq crazy mika and psycho joe. it follows criticism of the president on the morning joe. >> nothing makes a man feel better than making up a fake cover on a magazine about himself, lying about the country. >> the president is pushing back against people who attack him day after day after day. >> reporter: a league of democratic congresswomen spoke out forcefully. >> what he does is he demeans women, and more than that, he has demeaned himself. >> reporter: republican senator susan collins sat next to the president earlier this week and calls his rhetoric divisive.

>> the president has a problem with anyone who criticizes him or doesn't agree with him. >> reporter: some have called the president's tweets cyber bullying, which is ironically something the first lady has promised to combat while in the white house. many republicans are also concerned the president's comments aren't helping their legislative goals. >> what we're trying to do around here is improve the tone and civility of the debate and this obviously doesn't help do that. >> reporter: a tone lawmakers recently tried to reset in the wake of congressman steve scalise's shooting. weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. president trump is scheduled to meet with russian president vladimir putin next week. during an economic summit in germany. it will be president trump's first face-to-face meeting. with putin. during the campaign he called for better relations with russia, but russian interference

with the election and dispute over the civil war in syria have strained relations. and last night president trump hosted the new president of south korea for dinner at the white house. the president said he and moon jae-in would discuss south korea in two days of trade. earlier moon met with congressional leaders. we are learning more about the impact of medicaid cuts in the proposed senate republican health care bill. by 2036, the government would spend 35% less on medicaid than under the current law. that's according to the congressional budget office. meanwhile gop leaders are thinking about keeping a big tax increasing on wealthy americans imposed by obamacare. in texas two police officers are hospitalized in critical condition following a shoot-out in downtown san antonio. yesterday officers stopped a car with two men inside following a suspicious person report. one suspect opened fire. one officer was shot in the head. he's in grave condition and is

not expected to survive. >> one officer went down by the driver's door, the one who was shot in the head. the other officer pulled him from the line of fire to the front of the vehicle and returned fire himself after being shot in the chin. >> the officer shot in the chin is expected to survive. one suspect was killed in the shoot-out. the other was arrested. police don't know why the suspect opened fire. louisville police chased a person of interest in a string of robberies into southeast indiana. the chase ended in a field where the suspect was dragged from the field. the suspect robert ellis is wanted for allegedly stealing purses from cars at gas stations. >> the aaa says this fourth of july weekend will be the most traveled independence day ever. more than 44 million americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from today through july 4th. nearly 35 mill upare expected to drive and 3.5 million will fly,

livestream. those are some of the stories on the morning newsstand. the "los angeles times" says a murder suspect livestreamed part of a running gun battle with police. the gun battle began yesterday afternoon as officers were serving warrants for a murder earlier this year. officers spotted a suspect driving by and chased him. a police officer was wounded but is expected to survive. the suspect is in serious condition after being shot several times. the "washington post" says president trump's election fraud commission wants personal information about voters nationwide. it asked all 50 states for voters' names, addresses, party affiliations, and voting histories. a civil rights activist says the request lays the groundwork for voter suppression. virginia's governor says he will not comply. a police investigation reported by the "orlando sentinel" says venus williams caused a collision that led to the death of a passenger in another vehicle. officers say the tennis star ran a red light before the crash

three weeks ago in south florida. no citations have been issued. the citizen times of north carolina says a woman is accused of ramming her suv into a man who is suspected of trying to steal from her purse. it happened wednesday outside a walmart in asheville. she's facing an assault with a deadly weapon charge. >> i come back out here and he was with my purse and took off, and i took off after him. i was five months' pregnant. i chased after him. i then ran back and jumped in my him over. it's not right. it's not fair. >> well, he's in the hospital. he faces an array of charges. they're starting to recognize legal idesed recreational pot. it will be available at 30 dispensaries. lawmakers say they hope to wipe out the black market for pot.

the dow lost 167 points, the s&p fell nearly 21 points, and the nasdaq finished 90 points lower. the government's budget deficit will hit $693 billion for the fiscal year that ends in september. that's the largest deficit since 2013 and larger than the $585 billion the congressional office predicted in january. the main reason, government is taking in less tax revenue than expected. the cbo also predicted the government could run out of money by october if the debt ceiling isn't raised. walgreens and rite aid have a new deal now that their merger has been scrapped. walgreens will buy around half of rite aid stores, three distribution centers, and inventory in a deal worth over $5 billion. walgreens says the rite aid stores will be converted to the walgreens brand over time. and facebook says it has successfully tested an internet beaming drone. it's a large solar powered drone that facebook designed the stay

cbs news has learned that senate republicans are adding $45 billion to their obamacare replacement bill to fight opioid abuse. it's just a fraction of what medicaid covers right now. adriana diaz looks at what happens if medicaid is cut drastically. >> so let's talk a little bit about when you first heard about vivitrol. >> reporter: for the last 15 months 13-year-old eric hinman has been coming to this drug house to help end an opioid addiction. that could kill him. >> you go from doping to wanting to kill yourself. >> reporter: hinman and leah cohen, also a recovering heroin addict, have been coming here. they get a drug vivitrol.
