>> never. this is the "cbs evening news." >> mason: good evening this is our western edition, i'm anthony mason. a doctor who had been fired from a hospital in new york went back today wearing a white lab coat to hide an assault rifle. then he began shooting. when it was over, at least one victim was dead, several wounded. the shooter took his own life. don dahler is at the hospital in the bronx. >> reporter: it was just before 3:00 p.m. inside bronx-lebanon hospital when gunshots rang out on the 16th floor. police say dr. henry bello, a former employee at the hospital, pulled an assault rifle from under his white lab coat and opened fire. >> i saw blood on the floor. i saw a doctor with blood on his hands. >> reporter: gonzalo coraso orrked in the cardiology wing on the 12th floor and was close by.

>> all i heard was a doctor loying, "help, help." and then that's when i saw police came and everybody-- werybody just went to the room. i just went to a room and i locked myself in a room. he reporter: the gunman shot seven people, killing at least n e female doctor, before police say he shot and killed himself. ecry tremble received a frantic phone call from his fianceé who works as a patient aide and was barricaded in a hospital room on the fourth floor. >> i told her just, "stay low. whatever you're doing right now, just do it, but just don't make too much noise." r: reporter: bello set himself on fire before shooting himself. he had been fired recently from the hospital for harassing another employee. anthony, we're told that three of the victims were doctors and that some of them are fighting for their lives. >> mason: don dahler at the scene in the bronx. nimajor southern california freeway known for its bumper-to- bumper traffic jams turned into

a crash landing for a small plane today. enhn blackstone is at the scene in santa ana, about 35 miles south of los angeles. >> 297, may day! may day! >> reporter: that frantic call was made just seconds before s,is cessna burst into flames, crashing onto a crowded southern california highway. orteeporter: kai hsien shot this video after seeing the plane wobble on approach to john wayne airport. it crashed right in front of her. >> the flames were just they shot up hundreds of feet in the air. there was so much smoke coming out, i thought for sure eterybody on the plane would tve died. >> reporter: somehow both people on the plane survived. epey had just taken off when the bllot radioed there was trouble. >> reporter: he fell short. the runway was just a few hundred feet from interstate

405, the busiest freeway in the world. remarkably, no one was hurt on the ground. the plane clipped just four vehicles, including blackstone hamilton's pickup. >> i was struck by this cessna that spun around, saw flames all around us, checked my passenger, made sure he was okay. and gave each other a hug that we were-- that we were still alive. >> reporter: the plane has been on the freeway here for hours to be inspected by f.a.a. investigators. atcredibly, no one on the ground was seriously injured. but, anthony, there's still a travelers' nightmare here-- a major freeway blocked and empty on a friday holiday getaway. >> mason: john blackstone, thanks, john. .a for that getaway, a.a.a. estimates a record 44.2 million americans will travel at least 50 miles over the long weekend. the vast majority, 37.5 million will drive. as omar villafranca reports, their road trips are fueled by cheaper gas.

>> reporter: maria martinez is driving from texas to kansas for the independence day weekend. but this year, filling up her gas tank isn't draining her wallet. are you noticing you're saving money? >> i just saw right now it was $1.84. i haven't seen that. today was the first day i saw that. >> reporter: nationwide gas prices are the lowest they've nen all year, and at a 12-year holiday low. a.a.a. says the national average for gas is $2.24 a gallon, down a nickel from last year. 2.uth carolina has the cheapest prices at the pump at $1.91, while mississippi and missouri drivers are paying just under $2. california has the highest price in the continental u.s. at almost $3 a gallon. drew lockard is the managing director of opportune, an oil and gas consulting firm in .allas. >> gas prices are directly correlated to the price of crude. and so as the price of crude has come down, you've seen the price

of gasoline drop with it. >> miles driven 613. >> reporter: nova pittman uses or app to keep track of how many miles he's driven in his truck. when the texas pastor isn't saving souls, he's trying to , ve a few bucks at the pump. >> it was $50, $60, 70. and now i'm in the $40 range. ig's a big savings for me. >> reporter: here in texas, the average price of gas is just over $2 a gallon, but a.a.a. says more than half of the state's gas stations are selling it for under $2 a gallon. we found this one at $1.83. anthony, experts say these low gas prices could stick around for a few more months. >> mason: omar villafranca with some good news for this holiday weekend. president trump's feud with the host of a cable news show got even nastier today with talk of blackmail involving the "national enquirer." here's major garrett. >> mr. president, do you regret the tweet that you sent about mika brzezinski?

>> reporter: the president ignored a question today about his escalating feud with msnbc anchors mika brzezinski and joe scarborough. sk a "the washington post" op-ed headlined, "donald trump is not well," the two wrote that white house aides tried to intimidate them with a negative story in the "national enquirer." >> they said if you call the president up and you apologize for your coverage, then he will pick up the phone and basically spike the story. >> reporter: mr. trump is longtime friends with david pecker, c.e.o. of american media, that publishes the tabloid. in response to the allegation, the president tweeted it was scarborough who called him to stop the article. "i said no." sources tell cbs news scarborough called the president's son-in-law, jared kushner, in april, about a coming "enquirer" story. at some point in that tinversation, kushner suggested m apology from scarborough might prompt the president to intervene. through a spokesman the

"enquirer" said: >> this was a magazine that, frankly, in many respects, should be very respected. >> reporter: during the campaign, mr. trump praised the "national enquirer" and cited its articles about political rivals, especially senator ted cruz of texas. the tabloid had published a picture it claimed showed cruz's father with kennedy assassin, lee harvey oswald. >> all i did was point out the fact that on the cover of the "national enquirer" there was a eecture of him and crazy lee harvey oswald having breakfast. now, ted never denied that it was his father. >> reporter: there is no evidence cruz's father knew or met oswald. anthony, there is evidence this twitter spat has taken a toll here and on capitol hill, where the president's health care agenda is in dangerous limbo and a distracted white house gropes for a new political strategy.

>> mason: major garrett at the white house. thank you, major. this week, a presidential remmission began its investigation of possible election fraud by asking states to turn over a slew of voter information. nancy cordes reports the effort immediately ran into trouble. >> this is an outrageous violation of citizens' privacy rights. >> reporter: virginia governor terry mcauliffe told cbs news today his state will not hand over sensitive voter files to the white house. mcauliffe joins officials from ins than 20 states who say they can't or won't comply with this week's request for voter roll g ta, including addresses, dates li birth, political party, and even voter history, elections voted in from 2006 onward. ioe request came from the new presidential on election integrity, established after president trump, who lost the popular vote, insisted that edree million to five million voted illegally.

>> you have people that are registered who are dead, who are illegals, who are in two states. >> reporter: g.o.p. leaders have rejected his claim. >> i have seen no evidence to that effect. >> reporter: and today new york's democratic governor andrew cuomo announced, "we will not be complying with this request. new york refuses to perpetuate the myth that voter fraud played terole in our election." utah's republican lieutenant governor said, "we will not share any protected data with the commission." even the vice president's home state announced today that "indiana law doesn't permit the secretary of state to provide the personal information requested." the new commission is led by minsas secretary of state kris kobach, a longtime crusader leainst voter fraud. he says he only wants the data in order to "fully analyze vulnerabilities and issues related to voter registration and voting." democrats suspect there's more to it. >> we will not let donald trump and his right-wing extremists

use this as some covert plan to get data to make it harder for people to vote. we won't stand for it. >> reporter: a number of states say they want to help, and they'll provide any data they can legally share. but this afternoon, mississippi's secretary of state, a republican, called it a violation of voters' privacy, and said the commission can "go jump in the gulf of mexico. mississippi is a great state to launch from." anthony. >> mason: nancy cordes, thanks, nancy. today at the white house, president trump stood with south korea's president moon, on one issue, opposition to the north's nuclear program. but another, mr. trump demanded a renegotiation of a 2012 trade deal. the u.s. had a $17 billion trade deficit with south korea last year. the president is also said to be considering a tariff of up to 20% on imported steel. the white house has accused china of dumping cheap steel in the u.s.

commerce secretary wilbur ross is a key supporter of the rsriff, but some members of tongress worry that could set off a global trade war and raise prices in this country. police in the philadelphia suburb of west goshen are g vestigating the murder of an 18-year-old girl this week in an apparent road rage attack. jim axelrod is following this. >> reporter: outside philadelphia this afternoon, police held up this wanted poster, a drawing of the man driving this red pickup truck who allegedly shot and killed this 18-year-old recent high school graduate bianca roberson, in what appeared to be a traffic dispute. e omas hogan is the chester county, pennsylvania, district attorney. m a man in a red pickup truck pulled out a gun and shot her in the head, killing her. this is now a murder case. >> reporter: roberson and the man were merging into a single lane on a road in the town of west goshen, 25 miles west of philadelphia.

west goshen chief of police joseph gleason. >> this homicide was completely senseless, brutal, and tragic. >> reporter: after she was shot, roberson's car veered off the road into a tree. this honor roll student had planned to start at jacksonville university in august. >> he shot my baby. >> reporter: today, her parents spoke to reporters. >> she was a good girl. loved by many. never bothered anybody. she was just a sweet girl. >> reporter: the driver is described as a man of medium build, 30-40 years old, with dond or light-brown hair. the truck is described as a red faded pickup. >> turn yourself in. please, you took my life. you devastated this family. she was our life. l mason: at a late afternoon ncws conference, police said they do not have a suspect and they're not even close to an arrest. a $5,000 reward is being offered for information that would lead to either. >> mason: heartbreaking story.

francisco. how businesses plan to pass th kpix 5 news at a6:00 begins with wages going up! now get ready to pay more in san francisco. how business will pass the extra costs on to you. new at 6:00, one of the bay area's most expensive cities is giving workers a raise. tomorrow the minimum wage in san francisco is going up from $13 to $14 an hour making it one of the highest in the country. melissa caen found out that extra dollar comes with a price. >> reporter: yeah. some of you guys might actually even remember this. but in 2014, san francisco voters passed proposition j. it set up steady increases in the city's minimum wage. this year, the jump is from $13 to $14. some paychecks will go up but so will some price tags.

at golden bear sportswear some employees are about to get a raise. >> saturday starts new minimum wage in san francisco. it goes up to $14 an hour. >> reporter: mayor ed lee was quick to add that the new wage is not enough. >> we have to do other things. we have to build more affordable housing and we have to develop programs that make mass transit more affordable. >> reporter: at least one study says that seattle's minimum wage hike last year hurt employees because employers cut back on hiring and hours. but seattle jumped from $11 an hour to $13. mayor lee says san francisco's more incremental approach increasing about a dollar per year over four years is the key. >> we didn't do it abruptly overnight. we staged it in different levels. so that this saturday is $14 and not $15 and that we're giving people time. >> reporter: henry agrees. he is the president of a san francisco council representing small businesses. he says merchants just pass along e
