collapse. good afternoon, 'm michelle gri now at noon, flames rip through a mountain view condo causing the roof to collapse. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm anne makovec in for kenny choi. firefighters believe a coffee roaster may have started this early-morning fire in mountain view. it quickly spread to the

upstairs of the home and firefighters had to call in reinforcements. eventually, the roof collapsed. firefighters were able to contain the flames within an hour. and the mountain view fire chief says this complex posed some challenges. >> as you can see, this is a tight space to gut our apparatus in but we got what needed in in a timely fashion. >> one person was evacuated safely. the unit is destroyed. a three-alarm fire is out in san jose. it started this morning in an abandoned office building. kpix 5's jackie ward confirmed fireworks did not start it. >> reporter: hours after san jose firefighters successfully put out a three-alarm fire, some remained on scene to monitor any hot spots. this is what's left of an abandoned dentist office after an early-morning fire that started at 2:20 and went to three alarms at 3 a.m.

> 65 firefighters and command staff. we have no injuries. >> reporter: although this happened just hours after july 4 celebrations ended, san jose fire tells us fireworks did not cause this to happen. witnesses told them they saw homeless people running away from the burning building before firefighters showed up. >> thinks case, it's very common for boarded up facilities to become kind of de facto homeless encampments. so i hope that wasn't the case here. >> reporter: but it started inside. and there was a lot of toxic smoke firefighters had to battle through. >> it had fairly high contaminants in it so we evacuated the two structures to the back side of the building and sheltered in place other residents. >> reporter: the building on williams road has abandoned for two years, and police have been call the to the place at night. the fire is under investigation. in san jose, jackie ward, kpix 5. new at noon, the 4th of

july celebrations weren't all fun and games in newark. police say that an 18-year-old who set off a round of fireworks hurt his left and may have lost some fingers. he was taken to the hospital. officers say a short fuse may have caused the firework to malfunction. starting today, sonoma county is accepting applications for business permits to sell cannabis after a year-long engagement effort. the permit center is expecting a high volume of cannabis customers. so they will be extending hours today. california is now just five months away from allowing the sale of recreational marijuana. today a state assembly vote could extend last call by two hours for bars across california. it would move closing to 4 a.m. but some argue that move could increase alcoholism and traffic accidents. the bill has already passed in the state senate. president trump is making his second overseas trip today. he and first lady melania trump boarded air force one this morning heading to poland.

sky wednesday while they hit the sea the message was aimed at north korea. the move comes a day after north korea successfully test- fired its first intercontinental ballistic missile. it's capable of reaching alaska. >> i don't expect this is going to be the end of the line for them. i think the kinds of things they are doing will allow them to continue to increase the range. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson issued a statement saying, global action is required to stop a global threat. and that the u.s. will never accept a nuclear armed north korea. president trump has pushed china to intervene with economic pressure on north korea. but to no avail. the president fired off a tweet this morning pointing out china has increased trade with pyongyang and added, so much for china working with us. but we had to give it a try. china and russia say they opposed any attempt to resolve the crisis by force. and have proposed the u.s. and south korea end joint exercises

in the region in exchange for the north's suspending weapons tests. the u.n. security council is holding an emergency meeting this afternoon. but russia and china have veto power making new sanctions against north korea unlikely. weijia jang, cbs news, the white house. president trump will also discuss the issue directly with chinese president ping and russian president vladimir putin friday at the start of the g20 summit. four workers are recovering after getting stuck in an elevator more than 200 feet underground in brooklyn. firefighters used a harness to lift them up to elevator shaft to safety. no word on the cause. in new york a police officer was shot and killed overnight in her patrol car in the bronx. investigators say a man walked up to the car and shot the officer in the head. he tried to get away but was shot and killed by nypd officers nearby.

>> reporter: this puppy is one of three that came in during the 4th of july and here at the berkeley animal care services, they expect even more puppies to come n [ laughter ] >> throughout the day. >> reporter: cuddly and cute but also stared and lost. these dogs brought into berkeley animal shelter as fireworks burst in the air. >> this is the high season for stray animals coming in getting separated from their owners. obviously, because of the noise of fireworks and activities. >> reporter: amelia with berkeley animal care services says they are good evening up to receive even more animals, dogs and cats, throughout the day. for owners looking for pets, she says, visit your local shelter. not just the shelter in your city but maybe the one in the next store city, too, because animals don't know city boundaries. so they can cross over. put up flyers in your neighborhood. and check next door. that's a great resource for finding lost pets. about 35% of dogs that come into the berkeley shelter as strays are reunited with an owner but the dogs dropped off

here during the 4th of july don't have tags. >> make sure in advance that your animals are licensed, they have tags and microchips so if you are separated from them, we can get you back to them. >> reporter: the shelter will give owners one week to claim their dogs. after that, they go up for adoption. in berkeley, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. a caltrans sign in napa had drivers doing a double-take. instead of seeing the typical caution ahead sign, it said caution, asian drivers. someone shot this video last night. because of the holiday caltrans couldn't be reached for comment on a fix but this isn't the first time a sign has been hacked. a sign in dixon was changed last may and a year ago along highway 1 another sign was hacked, also a sign in san francisco has been changed before. we're hearing about more possible new features to come with apple's iphone 8. they will reportedly let you unlock your device with a face scan instead of your fingerprint.

results. >> so this is a way to tell them when to reapply. this is a way to tell them there is sun damage going on even though you don't see it. >> reporter: this dermatologist says sun damage is cumulative. so whether you use the patch or other app-connected wearables, awareness can help prevent skin cancer. >> it can engage a teen or child to where they can understand there's a link between how much sunscreen they put on, how much time they stay outside and the sun exposure that they get. >> reporter: dr. rubinstein adds people should not rely solely on technology when it comes to being sun-smart. use sunscreen that provides uva and uvb protection and reapply every two hours. after 20 minutes wearing the patch, cruz got a red alert. >> very surprised. i was in the sun for just a little bit. >> reporter: she says her experience will encourhe to wear even more sunscreen in the future. danielle nottingham, cbs news,

los angeles. even on a cloudy day, about 80% of uva rays still reach your skin. a mixture of sun and clouds today depending where you are in the bay area. roberta gonzales has a look at the forecast. >> hi, everybody. we are socked in along the coast and into the bay. we'll gradually season clearing around the rim of the bay with clouds lingering at the immediate seashore. this is your futurecast. this afternoon slight clearing and that's it at the immediate seashore. we fill back in the with stratus roughly about 1800 feet again tomorrow morning and we will warm up with the sunshine inland but not so much at the coast. speaking of the coast that right there, that is monsoonal moisture. that's interesting doings. this stretches from new mexico and arizona through the back door of monterey and san benito counties. it has produced some lightning strikes offshore about 50 this morning. cloud-to-ground lightning, which means we could see some higher fire danger in throughout the counties.

so we'll keep a watchful eye. but for the bay area, coastal cloudiness, warm away from the bay today, and then the warming trend will continue through friday into the weekend. this right here high pressure, well established over the four conners states will tribute to the warmer air into the interior valleys. 103 in fresno today, 99 in redding, 64 with thunderstorms in monterey and the high sierra. sunset at 8:35. by the time it comes back up tomorrow morning, the clouds fill in all the way through the bay and locally inland about 40 miles. 60s beaches, 60s peninsula, 80s inland, even an outside number today of 90 towards the delta, discovery bay and brentwood also. to the north, cloverdale. winds have been breezy, will continue to blow variably 10 to 20 throughout the day today.
