headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is in poland this morning where he's expected the lay out his vision for u.s. ties the europe. he's meeting with poland's president and later today he travels germany for an economic summit. there he'll hold meetings with leaders in germany and chai nachlt but it's tomorrows highly anticipated meeting with russia president vladimir putin is high on the agenda. hena daniels is here in new york with the latest. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the united states is warning north korea is quickly closing off the prospect of a diplomatic resolution. now during his second overseas trip, president trump will deliver a major speech in poland in the

nation and coordinating the delivery of humanitarian assistance. meanwhile they have fired a barrage of missiles into the waters in drills prepared for more possible north korean aggression. anne-marie. >> hena daniels here in new york. thank you so much, hena. the u.s. is threatening to punish countries like china tra trade with north korea. david martin has more on the north's growing nuclear threat.

>> reporter: kim jong-un kept his intercontinental ballistic missile hidden from satellites before it was rolled into position and aimed at space. it flew for 30 minutes, ready to reach alaska. >> there's no question we've crossed threshold here in the north koreans' ability to develop an icbm. >> leon panetta was defense secretary during the obama administration. >> it represents a very serious national security threat to the united states. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence first identified it as an intermediate defense missile. a tweet asking does this guy have anything better to do with his life. but david wright of the union of concerned scientists did been

surprised how quickly they're able to pull out new missile designs. >> reporter: wright estimates it would take another couple of years to develop one that's 1,000 pounds hertling toward the u.s., but unless something happens the day is coming. >> we're going to reach a that point and it may be sooner rather than later. >> reporter: u.s. and south korea responded to the latest test with some missile launches of their own, but leon panetta says it will take more than shows of force to change someone's mind. >> you can't outbully a bully in north korea, so it doesn't make a lot of sense simply to sit back and threaten this leader. >> reporter: the pentagon could, of course, make good on its

threats but nobody from the secretary of defense favors military action which they say could lead to catastrophic life. david martin, cbs news, pentagon. scalise was shot last month after a gunman opened fire at a republican baseball practice in virginia. he suffered severe internal injuries. scalise has undergone several surgeries and his condition had been upgraded. he's back in intensive care because of concerns over infection. a fast moving wildfire forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes near a popular ski resort. the fire was first reported yesterday afternoon in the white link national forest. it burned some 80 acres. the residents of more than 460 homes were forced to leave. >> we saw a lot of people

looking up toward the sky and so we went to see what it was. there was a big cloud of smoke and that's when we got the text to evacuate. >> so far no buildings have been damaged and cooling temperatures have helped cool the fire. and we're learning more about the gunman who killed the new york police officer. he ranted in a facebook post about law officers killing and abusing people. he said it's time for people to wise up. yesterday he walked up to a police command vehicle and shot an officer in the head. the mother of three died a few hours later. and bail was denied to the suspect in the kidnapping of a chinese scholar. prosecutors say brent christensen marched in a vigil for yin yang zhang last week. he always spoke about how she

resisted. her body has not been found. pro-government militia stormed congress. they carried wooden sticks and metal bars during the attack. at least four lawmakers were injured and one had to be removed on a stretcher. meanwhile the venezuelan who stole a police helicopter and violated two government buildings urged them to stand firm in the streets. oscar perez says he's ready for the campaign to free his homeland. american airlines has apologized to a passenger who had to give up a seat. last week a woman was forced to hold her son on a 3 1/2 hour flight from houston to boston. when she complained to the flight attendant, she shrugged. she was afraid to make too much of a ruckus.

"the times-picayune" of new orleans said a congressman apologized for recording a video at auschwitz. clay higgins says the video has been taken offline. the museum at the former nazi death camp says a gas chamber should not be part of a political message. and a puppy sheds light on a domestic abuse. a chihuahua was left in a bathroom. the woman said she was fleeing an abusive boyfriend and could not take the dog with her. seving up justice. a young tennis fan who had a souvenir towel snatched from him gets another chance at a

dow lost 1 point, the s&p gained nearly 4 points. the nasdaq finished the day nearly 40 points higher. volvo will become the first automaker to stop making cars built by intern combustion chambers. it was dictated by customer demand. electric and hybrid sales accounted for 3% of worldwide sales last year. the arts and craft retailer hobby lobby will forfeit thousands of artifacts as part of a settlement with the department of justice. they were smuggled into the u.s. from iraq. they were obtained from an antiquities leader. they will also pay a $3 million fine. and president trump's failed atlantic city casino, the taj mahal, is having a liquidation sale today. the casino opened in 1990, but

the insurance institute for highway safety crash tested six large car models. >> the top winners have good ratings in all of our crash testing, plus they're available with a front crash prevention system rated advanced or superior and headlights that are rated acceptable or good. >> the ranking means drivers or passengers in each of the three models have a higher chance of survival if involved in an accident. the top models include the 2017 lincoln continental and the redesigned ee class. the toyota avalon was promoted to a top safety pick plus to a top safety pick because engineers improved the aim of headlights. >> cars that have better

headlights help with fewer crashes and they see obstacles better alt night. >> other cars missed the mark, receiving poor ratings for their head lighting. but the chevy impala and others have good crash tests. >> a lot of the crash energy is concentrated on a part of the car that traditionally doesn't have a lot of structure. >> the impala ranked higher in its front crash presense system than the taurus. the tesla hasn't yet been rated in that category. danielle nottingham, cbs news, los angeles. an object that prompted a bomb scare in new york city turned out to be a district flashback. they found the torpedo like container yesterday. it turned out to be a time capsule buried 33 years ago buried 30 years ago. police say they'll give it back to the former owner.

our top story this morning, president trump is in poland, the first stop of a four-day european trip. later he travels to germany for an economic summit. this as the united states looks for ways to pressure north korea as it follows its launch that could hit parts of the u.s. he meets with russian president vladimir putin tomorrow. it was 80 years ago this week that amelia earhart disappeared, never to be seen again. it's one of the greatest mysteries in aviation hit. chip reid tells us about a new clue. >> reporter: when amelia're hart disappeared in the south pasting in 1937, she made headlines around the world. >> amelia earhart and her

navigator -- >> reporter: she was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. she took off for helen island. she never made it. u.s. investigators believe she crashed and died somewhere in the pacific. plane and her remains were never found. dozens of searches have come up empty until possibly now. >> i have a photograph which i believe clearly indicates that earhart was captured by the japanese. >> reporter: les kinney who spent years searching for earhart believes he has resolved the history and has shown the evidence in a history show the this coming sunday. >> this photography came out of a navy file in the national archives and it was misfiled and that's the only reason i found it. >> reporter: experts have identified photo. they believe this man is fred
