griego. >> i'm anne makovec, in for kenny choi. the fire started at around 4:30 this morning at 24th and valdez streets in oakland just a few blocks away from lake merritt and auto row. we have live team coverage on the fire and the evacuations. first, kpix 5's katie nielsen is at the scene. katie. >> reporter: firefighters are still pouring water into what's left of this building. they are actually trying to put out any remain hot spots so that the investigators from the alameda county arson task force as well as atf can get in and start figuring out how this fire started. smoke, ash and embers billowed into the early-morning sky as the development at 2424 valdez went up in flames. >> before we knew it, the fire had spread to the elevator shaft on the opposite side of the building. and once it hit that, it just took off. >> reporter: the first 911 call came in at 4:30 and

firefighters got to the scene less than five minutes later. >> our units summoned needly based on the size of the buildings and the conditions additional firefighters to the third alarm. >> reporter: 80 firefighters battled the flames but were quickly pushed back because a construction crane in the middle of the fire started spinning out of control. >> when it takes on heat, it started to spin. that was one of our major concerns in fighting the fire. >> reporter: firefighters waged war against the flames with ladder trucks and never sent firefighters inside the empty building. they were trying to save the hopes and businesses next to the massive inferno. >> it would minimize the damage to the buildings, primarily radiant heat. >> reporter: as firefighters fought from above, evacuated residents still wearing pajamas, slippers and bathrobes couldn't do anything but watch. >> just amaze at how fast it went up, very fast. >> reporter: oakland mayor

libby schaaf reacted to the loss of the apartment units in this fire. here's what she had to say. >> oakland is in the middle of a housing crisis. and the loss of these valuable new units only exacerbates that problem. we are very clear that this type of development is what oakland needs to get through this moment where rents are skyrocketing, where housing is in high demand. this is a loss for our city and for this region right now. >> reporter: we actually got to the scene of this fire at about 5:00 this morning. we were standing right here and the heat was so intense from the fire that was a block and a half behind us, it almost felt like a blast furnace right in our face. ash was raining down on us all morning. you can actually still see some of the ash coating the cars. so firefighters and investigators are going to be

on the scene here all day, trying to clean up, mop up what's left. also, they will continue their investigation. and people here are now tasked with trying to clean up the area around their homes. reporting live in oakland, katie nielsen, kpix 5. kpix 5's jackie ward continues our team coverage with people who had to rush out of their homes when the fire broke out. jackie. >> reporter: for a while, a lot of people who live around here didn't know where to go, what to do or where to seek shelter. for a long time they just knew they had to get out of their building and get out fast. >> we had to wake up, get your stuff and get out. >> holy crap, that's the biggest fire i have ever been this close to. >> reporter: she was one of hundreds looking for a safe place to go while this fire ripped through the structure adjacent to her home. >> it's giant. it was all the way up into the

sky. i thought, maybe i should get away from this thing as far as possible but i have two dogs, and so we were trying to find a place that ash wouldn't fall on them while we were walking around. >> reporter: this family was trying to find a safe respite, too. they just moved to oakland from new york two months ago with their baby, dog and cat. >> the scariest part is the crane was going back and forth swinging wildly at 5:30. so that was bad. >> it was real bad. a bad situation here in oakland. >> reporter: hours after the fire, police escorted people to live here at 100 grand back into their building, but only to grab essential items and quickly leave. because of the power was still turned off, some people had to walk up 19 floors to get back home as fire crews continued to monitor the scene and make it safe enough for investigators to go inside. the american red cross has set up a shelter at cathedral of christ the light at 21st and

harrison to give people a place to stay and stay informed. that shelter will stay in place for at least the rest of the day. but possibly through the night, as well. it all depends on when the fire department will let people back into their homes. and right now, that time has yet to be determined. jackie ward, kpix 5. another live look from chopper 5 shows the burned-out remains of that six-story construction site. you can see crews are still on the scene spraying any hot spots. the concern right now is about the stability of the construction crane. there's also the possibility of scaffolding collapsing. a woman who lives next door to the site posted this video on twitter minutes after the fire started. she did not have much time to leave home and evacuate with neighbors to a parking lot across the street. if you were driving when the fire started, you may have seen it even for from miles away. >> take a look at this video taken by kpix 5's jackie ward from the interstate heading to the scene. >> the building known as alta waverly was set to be completed next spring.

this was what it was going to look like once finished. the building was set to include 196 market rate apartments and almost 32,000 square feet of retail with residential parking in an underground ground. the developer said they were grateful no one was hurt. this is one of several destructive fires in the east bay over the past few months. another early-morning fire erupted at a structure under construction in emeryville back in may. investigators later discovered surveillance video that showed a suspect riding a bicycle up to the site minutes before the raging fire. the 7-story half finished project was destroyed for the second time in less than a year. it had also burned in july of last year. another building fire last march killed four people in west oakland. more than 80 low income residents were living in transitional housing when the building caught fire overnight. investigators say a burning candle sparked that fire and that it was accidental. again, today's fire started

at a six-story construction site on valdez and 24th street. very close to lake merritt. flames and plumes of smoke could be seen across the bay. at one point, the fire reached four alarms. crews had to knock on doors and evacuate other buildings in the area. evacuees were taken to christ the light church. no report of any injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. meantime, the two men charged in last year's deadly oakland warehouse fire were expected to enter pleas. instead, their attorneys asked the judge for a delay. the next court date for both max harris and derick almena will be on august 4. the defense says the men will likely enter a not guilty plea and ask for bail reduction. >> we keep our fingers crossed with the bail. we continue to review the discovery. we look intently. we are teams that evaluate the evidence and at this juncture, we see, you know, no evidence that they can ever show that

our clients committed any act with criminal negligence. >> prosecutors sathey turned the warehouse into a housing and party space without permits or safety systems. in december, 36 people were killed in the fire at the west oakland warehouse known as the ghost ship. the flames started during a music event. our top international story this afternoon, the much- anticipated meeting between president trump and russian president vladimir putin. the two sat down during the g20 summit in germany. cbs reporter mola lenghi is following it from the white house. >> reporter: president trump and russian president vladimir putin sat down for their first face-to-face meeting talking for more than two hours and 15 minutes. >> it's an honor to be with you. >> thank you. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson says the president opened the meeting talking about russian interference in the presidential election. >> the president pressed president putin on more than one occasion regarding russian

involvement. president putin denied the involvement as he has in the past. >> reporter: they agreed to a cease-fire in southwest syria beginning sunday. >> the u.s. has supported antisyrian government forces in the conflict while russia has been propping up the assad government. >> i think this is our first indication of the u.s. and russia being able to work together in syria. >> reporter: it wasn't all putin and russia today. the president met with the mexican president. >> we'll see how it turns out. >> reporter: he canceled a meeting with president trump at the white house earlier this year after a dispute over the border wall. >> you want mexico to pay for the wall. >> thank you. >> reporter: demonstrators continue their violent protests outside the summit. they blame g20 leaders for problems including climate change and the migration crisis. they even successfully blocked melania trump from leaving her hotel this morning. mola lenghi, cbs news, the

takeoff... around 8 this morning. the pilot was not hurt. d there's no s new at noon, a small plane crashed north of the nut tree airport in vacaville shortly after take-off around 8 a.m. the pilot was not hurt and there is no sign of any fuel leaks. the fbi is investigating after witnesses say a passenger attacked a delta flight attendant in midair. delta flight 129 was going from seattle to beijing when a 23- year-old florida man in first class started acting agitated. another passenger says the man started going towards the exit door where a flight attendant tried to subdue him. he says she got punched and then another man tried to help and he got hit, too. the situation kept escalating. >> and they broke two bottles of wine on his head and then a scuffle broke out. we used a cart pushed against him and then we tackled him. tried to choke him and he threw me off like a rag doll and then we ziptied him and flew back here. >> the man was arrested and taken away in a wheelchair. witnesses say they were focused on the emergency doors saying

there. otherwise, great visibility. there you have the scene. isn't that just gorgeous? does that just say san francisco? wow! low clouds, you can almost hear the trolley cars, right? you can see right now the low clouds. closer to the bay, cooler temperatures. city of san francisco 72 degrees. 93 in livermore. 88 san jose. winds picking up in san francisco up to 11, otherwise the winds are now calm in fairfield. but these winds will be increasing 10 to 20, drying out the atmosphere, humidity goes down, temperatures go up. and so do we increase our fire danger around the bay area. it's going to be warm this weekend to downright hot away from the water. otherwise, gradual cooling will not occur until tuesday. high pressure is firmly in place right there over the four corners states and imagine that hot air mass in the desert southwest being transported into the interior valleys and

when you do the physical exam, you can rule in and rule out what you think. so that's why a good history and physical exam is important. in this dog's case i thought i would say it is prudent when you get a distemper-parvo vaccine for your pet -- she is a little nervous. [ laughter ] >> we give the vaccine over the shoulder blade region and i have seen in my experience, i have seen on occasion sometimes it will be very itchy afterwards. it only lasts a few minutes. so i'm not sure in this particular dog's case whether or not that was vaccine- related. and i have also seen in just a very few dogs severe inflammation in the neck region that leads to quite a but the of pain. and they don't want to jump up on the furniture. they don't like to be touched there. they don't want to move. they definitely shake and so, um, i am wondering in this particular dog's case if that's still occurring or if it abated after three to five days. so if it did go away after three to five days, i think it probably was the vaccine but if
