i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the latest on possible collusion between the trump campaign and russia. donald trump jr. says he met with a kremlin-linked lawyer who promised help with the campaign. the meeting between the president's eldest son took place in june at the trump tower shortly after his father won the gop nomination. "the new york times" reports trump jr. agreed to the meeting after being promised he would be told information linked to clinton. his brother-in-law jared kushner and then campaign manager paul manafort also attended. in a statement trump jr. said during the meeting the lawyer had information that individuals in marco rubio were funding the national democratic committee and supporting hillary clinton but he said no details were offered and it turned into a plan allowing u.s. citizens to adopt russian children. meanwhile president trump

says he strongly pushed president vladimir putin and back tracked on cooperating with russia on cyber security. brook silva-braga is here in new york. brook, good morning. >> good morning. many in congress, both democrat and republican expressed concern after the president announced he had discussed partnering with russia to combat election hacking. by last night that had changed. president trump has backed off a plan to create a cyber security team with russia. mr. trump started sunday morning with this tweet about his g-20 meeting with vladimir putin. pew tip and i discussed the security unit so hack and many other things can be guarded. >> if that's our best election defense, we might as well mail our ballot boxes to moscow.

>> reporter: by sunday night he was writing a different tune, righting in part just because we discussed a cyber plan doesn't mean it can happen. it can't. it came after a day of criticism not ust from democrats but republicans as well. >> to forgive and to forget is to empower putin, and that's exactly what he did. >> marco rubio said partnering with russia on a cyber unit is the same as partnering with assad on a chemical weapons unit. >> senator cain went a step further to say i'm sure putin would be of assistance since he's the one doing the hacking. he also said russia got away with disrupting while pay nothing penalty. anne-marie? >> brook silva-braga. thanks, brook. ahead on "cbs this morning," the former acting director of the cia michael morell on the possible investigation into the collusion between the trump

campaign and russia. congress returns from the july 4th recess today, but efforts to repeat and replace the affordable care act look to be dead in the water. at least ten gop senators say they oppose the bill drafted by mitch mcconnell and the others. senator mccain says that bill is dead and it's time to come up with a new proposal with the democr democrats. >> introduce a bill. say to the democrats, here's a bill. it doesn't mean they control it. it means they can have amendments considered. then when they lose, they're part of the process. that's what democracy is supposed to be all about. >> and the clock is ticking. lawmakers have three weeks of work before an august recess. some republicans want to shorten the break, which would go against capitol hill direction. turning to the western states now, this morning dozens of wildfires are burning from

denver to oregon. there are red flag warnings indicating critical fire postings in six states. three fires in california have sent people running for their lives. one temporarily trapped council ler and their children are running. ving flames jumped t >> reporter: like when fast moving flames jumped the highway, they had little time to react when the santa barbara fire quickly grew to thousands of acres. strong winds fueled the whittier fire, forcing hundreds to evacuate including 90 children attending summer camp. everyone got out safely but at least 20 structures have been destroyed. a much larger fire is burning to north where the alamo fire has scorched 20,000 acres. fire captain dave zaniboni. >> we thought we had a pretty good jump on it.

but the fire jumped the line. >> reporter: gretchen leaf had to quickly prepare to evacuate. >> reporter: that's also what residents faced north of sacramento. >> i just can't even believe what i'm seeing. >> reporter: over 4,000 fires have burned in the wildfire. >> the wind was shifting badly, going one way or the other. the poor firefighters have had their hands full. >> reporter: at least four buildings have burned to ground with no containment in sight. in los angeles temperatures are being blamed for another fire. a transformer that exploded, knocking out power to 140,000 customers. there have been no deaths in any of these fire, but there have been several injuries. to put this year in perspective so far, there have been 2,100 fires here in california. that's up 22% from the same time last year. mireya villarreal, cbs news, los angeles. this morning a cease-fire by in southern syria negotiated by

the u.s., russia, and jordan, appears to be holding. the truce covers three provinces including thee areas where the syrian government and rebels are fighting isis militants are not part of the deal. no cease-fire has lasted long in the six-year syrian war. u.s.-backed rebels are backing syrian government forces supported by russia, and the prime minister of iraq congratulated iraqi troops for driving isis militants out of the city of mosul. isis took over iraq's second largest city in 2014. the battle to free the city began nine months ago. the militants still hold onto a small part of the city. losing mosul would be a major set back for isis. at least eight people have been arrested with an american killed outside a bar in greece. 22-year-old bakari henderson was with friends on an island when he was beaten earl friday morning. it's unclear what prompted the

the camden lot market. the fire purveyor says the fire is under control and no injuries have been reported. back home a bear attacked a sleeping cam camper and a deadly party. "the cincinnati enquirer" reports two men are sought for killing a woman and wounding eight others at a party for an expectant mother. three children and a pregnant woman are anothing those wounded saturday night in a suburb. the woman reported she lost her unborn child. police say there was no sign of unforced entry by the gunmen. the sydney roman herald reports that a roman catholic cardinal accused of sexual abuse has returned to rome today. senior cardinal george pell is expected to face charges later this month. the "lansing state journal" reports the former gymnastics

treasury secretary steve mnuchin says the trump administration is not considering a tax increase on the wealthiest americans. mnuchin says they plan to introduce their new tax plan by november. they plan to introduce it from 39% to 35% and lower tax rates for the middle class. it's unclear how the administration plans to offset the cost of those cuts. we're getting a first look alt the new battery powered tesla model 3. ceo elon musk tweeted photos of the car over the weekend. the model 3 sedan will cost $35,000. tesla says it can travel 216 miles on a single charge. it already has orders for more than 370,000 cars. and a big debut for "spider-man" homecoming. >> wait a minute. you guys aren't the real avengers.

torrential rain is blamed for the collapse of a favor-story building in western tibet. residents evacuated before the building fell saturday and no one was hurt. rain has pummeled away the region last month, washing away a road and two bridges. the son of a former major leaguer who was struck by a baseball has been released to return home. jason lockhart was released yesterday from an atlanta hospital after undergoing senn surgeries the last three weeks. the 15-year-old was hit in the face during a tournament last month. he's the son of former braves infielder keith lockhart. many people who survive severe illness or injury are unable to exercise, but now new specialized gyms are helping them. weijia jiang has the story.
