newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. donald trump jr. is speaking out about his meeting with a lawyer allegedly connected to the kremlin during last year's campaign. he calls charges of collusion ridiculous and insists his father knew nothing about the meeting. but in an e-mail chain trump jr. released himself desiring to get dirt on clinton seems to go against that. hena daniels in new york. good morning. >> good morning. even though trump jr. is insisting the meeting amounted to nothing, lawmakers from both parties are expressing unease with the whole situation. >> they had something. i think i wanted to hear it out, but really it went nowhere. >> donald trump jr. appearing on fox news insisting his meeting

with a russian lawyer at trump tower last year during the election was, quote, a wasted 20 minutes, a meeting set up because she promised dirtd on hillary rodham clinton. >> in retrospect, i would have probably done things a little differently. this was before russian mania, before they were building things up in the press. >> on tuesday trump released the entire e-mail chain leading up to the meeting. in a message rob goldstone informed him a russian official had very sensitive and high-level information about clinton in support of mr. trump, which don junior replied, if it's what you say, i love it. a dialogue raising concern on both sides of the aisle. >> whether the russians wanted to help trump's campaign have to be viewed in a completely different context. >> the president released a

statement calling his son a high-quality person while applauding his transparency. the president's attorney insists don junior did nothing wrong. >> i'm just trying to look at it as a lawyer, saying, okay, what statute of the law has been violated and code has been violated. it doesn't exist. >> rob mueller is expected to look into the e-mails and meeting. don junior said if he's asked to test under oath says he will say he didn't tell his father about the meeting because, quote, there was nothing to tell. anne-marie? >> hena daniels here in new york. thank you so much, hena. donald trump's meeting has changed. it has lawmakers outraged. nancy cordes has more. >> this is obviously very significant, deeply disturbing. >> democrats describe the e-mail

while the investigation into possible trump campaign collusion with the russians is grabbing headlines, senate republican leaders are trying to push through a revised health care bill. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said he'll try to push through a bill next week. he had to cancel last month when too many fellow republicans rejected that measure. some republicans remain wary. >> my concern is it just may be a bill that's been tweaked from the previous version, and i want to see a complete overhaul. >> mcconnell delayed the senate's recess for two weeks to give lawmakers more time to deal with health care and other issues. and one of those other issues the lawmakers are dealing with is confirming the new fbi director. the confirmation hearing for nominated christopher wray begins today.

two new wildfires have forced evacuations in california. at least two homes have been destroyed by a fire outside san jose and a fire in san diego county forced out at least 15 families. meanwhile a fire burning north of sacramento has now destroyed at least 41 homes and at least 4,000 people there remain under evacuation orders. the search for four missing men in pennsylvania is focusing on a farm about 30 miles north of philadelphia. law enforcement officers used a backhoe to dig a deep trench for and cadaver dogs to search for remains. none have been found. a man held on an unrelated gun charge were released on bail. cosmo dinardo is described as a person of interest. a friend says dinardo was in an accident last year and suffered a brain injury.

investigators are sifting through the wreckage of a marine air tanker to determine why it crashed into a mississippi soybean field. 15 marines and a navy sailor were kill ed in the crash. the c-130 was taken off from north carolina. it was carried members of an elite special operations unit to arizona for training. >> every resource that we have that we can pull from will be used to determine what happened and every resource we can give to families as well will be made available to them. >> the air crew was based in new york. witnesses say the plane spiraled out of the sky into the ground. it was the deadliest air marine disaster since 2005. thousands gathered for the offer officer who was shot and killed while sitting in her police vehicle.

our top stories this morning, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he'll introduce a revised health care bill tomorrow and force a vote next week. he scuttled the vote last week when too many republicans refused. the bill will fail if just three republicans vote no. and donald trump jr. is defending his meeting with a russian lawyer with alleged ties to the kremlin. he admits he was eager to get damaging information about hillary clinton but says his father knew nothing about the meeting.

trump jr. released e-mails showing he was told the russian government had information that could incriminate clinton. in the e-mail trump jr. responded, i love it. donald trump jr.'s e-mail falls within the mandate of the special counsel. julianna goldman looks at the investigation. >> reporter: one of the key questions for robert mueller investigating russian interference in the 2016 election is whether and how the trump campaign was involved. collusion isn't illegal but conspiracy is, so does the fact that donald trump jr. and the fact that others met with someone they were told was a russian government layer who wanted to help the campaign constitute a smoking gun. that the changes rationales obviously fuels the allegations of collusion, of conspiracy. >> reporter: jonathan turley is a law professor at george washington university. he said the e-mails alone don't raise questions of conspiracy but they put into question donald trump.

why did they initially lie about the purpose of the meeting. >> conflicting stories for prosecutors are like blood in the water for the shark. it attracts prosecutors and investigators. they want to know why there's conflicts. >> reporter: then there's this. do the e-mails contradict any information campaign provided to the fbi. that could lead to criminal charges. furthermore, why didn't jared kushner include that information. >> the most critical issue comes down to false statements. for those of us who do centimeter defense work, that's the crime we fear the most because it's very hard to defend against. the government uses that to convict people in washington more than any other crime did they solicit information that could be of value from a foreign agent. lawyers we talked to said that's a harder case to prove. julianna goldman, cbs news, washington. coming up on "cbs this morning," concerns about sleep deprivation among uber drivers.
