outside the courthouse in oakland, where the sentencing was just announced. jessica. >> reporter: michelle, kenny, i was in the courtroom as one goh came out and i can tell you he appeared disheveled. he was wearing a tan sweatsuit, long hair and he sat quietly as the judge read the sentence telling him he will spend the rest of his life in prison. the lawyer says that goh is mentally competent enough understand his actions -- enough to understand his actions five years after the shooting rampage. the 48-year-old entered a plea of no contest of killing 7 people at his former school, oikos university in oakland, in 2012. the judge found him guilty of 7 counts of first-degree murder sentencing him to 7 consecutive terms of life each victim witho possibility of parole. family members of the victims addressed the court. it was an emotional hour, one calling him a coward.

goh made no comments but his lawyer addressed the court on his behalf saying goh hopes his sentence brings closure and that, quote, he is sorry. >> do you feel like you had justice today that there was justice served today? >> um, i would have liked, um, the death penalty. but, um, i mean, i'm glad that it's over and there's actually justice because, you know, somebody's found guilty because for so long, you know, i was always afraid that what if this never, never got a trial? >> he is extremely sorry. he feels -- he was friends with these people. it -- this was a tragedy borne of mental illness. >> reporter: the sentencing comes just a few months after doctors said goh was competent to stand trial. he was receiving treatment at a state hospital for mental illness. in addition to the seven counts of first-degree murder, the judge also stacked on top of that weapons charges. bottom line, goh will spend the

rest of his life in maximum security state prison without the possibility of parole. in oakland, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. new at noon, some oakland police officers were promoted today but protestors crashed their ceremony. kpix 5's jackie ward reports they accuse the officers of manipulating a sex scandal investigation. >> reporter: as three officers were inside getting promoted, these protestors were outside voicing their disagreement. a group of about 20 people from the anti-police terror project held signs in front of the greek orthodox cathedral in oakland today. they said by being here, they are holding oakland city leaders accountable. the anti-police terror project claims the officers getting rewarded today were involved in trying to cover up the police sex scandal involving a minor. they believe the officers failed to properly investigate the scandal and even encouraged the teen sex worker formerly known as celeste guap to destroy evidence in the case. a representative for the protestors said they are putting the chief and her

department on notice. >> she is interested in ending the good old boy's network, she is interested in business as usual. that's what they are doing here. it's been given the code sign by libby schaaf. we are here letting them know, we see what they're doing and we won't stop following them until we get a clean opd. >> reporter: this is as close as police let the media get today. we were not allowed inside and didn't speak to any officers about what was taking place. in oakland, jackie ward, kpix 5. two children are recovering after a small plane that they were in crashed in the north bay. the crash killed their father, who was flying the plane. he has been identified as a bay area professor. the single-engine plane went down after it just took off from sonoma skypark. his two children and another woman were rushed to the hospital. the man who died at the scene was 38-year-old william s. goldman, an assistant professor at usf. the president of the university sent out this statement saying, quote, bill an assistant professor in international studies in the college of arts

and signs was beloved and a value member of our community. he will be missed by his colleagues, students and countless alumni inspired by him in and out of the classroom." william goldman was the grandson of the well known san francisco philanthropists richard and rhoda goldman. the plan for a proposed pot shop in the outer sunset district was voted in for a dispensary at noriega and 32nd avenue. hundreds of supporters and critics of the business showed up to the meeting. former oakland mayor jean quan and her husband own part of the business. last night's decision is not a done deal. it could be appealed by the board of supervisors. a live look now at the bay bridge. one of the bridges where the toll could go up if voters approve a toll hike ballot proposal. kpix 5's anne makovec tells us that the proposal has already

cleared a key hurdle. >> reporter: it could soon cost up to $3 more to cross the bay area's bridges, a decision that would ultimately be up to voters. most everyone can agree that traffic congestion is a big problem in the bay area. >> terrible. >> reporter: a $4.2 billion plan to ease the trouble just passed another hurdle in the state legislature. itthere would be a ballot measure for a toll increase for up to $3 on all the state-run bridges. >> that's brutal. >> reporter: the current toll is $5 with bay bridge tolls rising during peak hours. > $3 more? too much! >> reporter: other drivers could be persuaded. >> $3 seems like a lot of money but it sounds like it's for good use. >> reporter: the money would help improve roads and bridges. there would also be new funding for mass transit like bart,

caltrain and ferries. >> i would not have to pay. i would still bart across. >> reporter: it could depend on who is voting. the bill now moves to the assembly appropriations committee. it could hit the full assembly floor this summer. anne makovec, kpix 5. a live look now from our dublin camera. the east bay heating up for the weekend, beautiful shot there. roberta gonzales has a look. >> that is a beautiful shot there, michelle. did you notice that mid-level cloudiness there and also here is our live weather camera from lick observatory atop mount hamilton looking towards the santa clara valley, another scene where we can pick up some of those mid- to high-level clouds all associated with monsoon moisture to the south. how about this view? does this say hot or what? this definitely says moderate air quality. currently, temperatures are soaring to the mid-80s in livermore. it is now 76 degrees in santa rosa. 74 redwood city. now, see that huge yellow highlighted area everywhere

with way from the rim of the bay? that's where we do anticipate triple-digit heat this weekend. we'll talk about just exactly where the heat is on and how hot it's going to get and, most importantly, when is the heat going to end? that's coming up later in this newscast. new video shows a massive sinkhole swallowing a florida home. neighbors forced to evacuate as the sinkhole widens. a small depression was first discovered this morning in a neighborhood north of tampa. in just a matter of hours, officials say it grew to over 200 feet wide and 50 feet deep. the house on top of it collapsed and the home right next to it was heavily damaged. >> when you come back and you see your house also starting to crumble, what do you feel? >> oh. i can't describe that. it was terrible. >> at least we got everyone out and the family and the dogs and all our papers. >> a property appraiser says a

sinkhole was identified at the very same location back in 2012. it was stabilized two years later before the house on top of it was sold in 2015. vast stretches of the midwest are under water after the region was hit by severe storms this week. in ohio, the torrential rain left a carnival, high school football field and several homes under water. dozen has to evacuate from a mobile home park, as well. first responders used boats to rescue them. in wisconsin the fox river crested at more than 17 feet. motor of it will recede by sunday morning. president trump and the first lady are wrapping up a two-day trip to france where they attended bastille day celebrations. u.s. and french jets flew over paris this morning as soldiers from the two nations marched along the champs elysees below. despite political tension in the past, president trump and

retailer shutdown its stores unexpectedly. wedding planning is stressful enough and now many brides-to-be are furious after a bridal retailer closed unexpectedly. customers are seeing signs like this after the company shut down nationwide stores yesterday. brides and bridesmaids were contacted and told to pick up

when you buy it at the market, you want to make sure that all the net something nice and tight all the way around, very important. heavy for their size. these melons won't last long. the sugar content is so high. you can tell it's high because you see right here, right it's small rind so you have a lot of sugar. store it in the refrigerator for two or three days at the most. golden kiss melons, enjoy them, you'll love them. that we see lead to that short life-span, diabetes, if they have arthritis, a lot of weight on their hips and the other places they might have it. some jobs have disk disease in the neck and extra weight is not going to be helpful. they can't exercise right because they are so overweight they can't move. so it really comes down to preventative care which everybody knows now is my favorite thing. now is my and so feeding the right amount of food is important. keeping away from people food. people know i'm not a big advocate of feeding people food. a dog this size is probably going to eat my recollection is about 300 calories. so if you feed them a slice of bread that's 100 calories there. >> it says giving them so many treats, you can give them a little rub here hand there instead. >> exactly. we're talking about that, in terms of making them be happy because they have done something right or use low calorie treats. be aware if you are feeding the treats they may need to eat less at meal time. so you do all these things, that should be helpful. but definitely this is an issue we see and i think it's
