others hurt, when the ride malfunctioned. some of these images are disturbing. katie nielsen spoke to santa cruz beach boardwalk officials about a similar ride there. >> reporter: the fireball ride here in santa cruz will stay closed today. that's after an order from the state agency that oversees ride inspections. that's because it's the same ride made by the same company as the one that broke apart in ohio last night. a cell phone showed the accident, hurling riders to the ground below. it's a portable version of the fireball ride at the santa cruz beach boardwalk. >> we are just closing the ride and leaving it as is until we get more information from the state and some direction from them as to how they would like us to handle the situation. >> reporter: a similar ride at the california state fair in sacramento is closed today. it was made by the same manufacturer as the ride in ohio. >> it's not running, it's not going to run until they tell us what happened in ohio and the factory tells us it's okay to

operate. >> reporter: cal/osha oversees inspections of permanent and portbl amusement park rides in california. >> they are among the safest rides in the world largely because of the state's role in overseeing ride safety. >> reporter: but the people we spoke to at the beach boardwalk say it's much do about nothing. >> santa cruz beach boardwalk is a little more probably dependable than a carnival that's set up in a day. >> so if it goes from one location to another location, i can see how that can pose more danger for a ride. this one is here all the time. >> reporter: there's currently no timeline on when these rides re-open. everyone from the various amusement parks in northern california we talked to said it all depends on state inspectors. in santa cruz, katie nielsen, kpix 5. a medical marijuana dispensary has been given the green light in san francisco. but one group is appealing the decision. kpix 5's jackie ward on the pot

club battle in the sunset district. >> reporter: plans to open the sunset's first medical cannabis dispensary are in the works but now a group called the pacific justice institute is appealing the plans saying it's a matter of upholding state law. it's a location that's already gotten a lot of attention in the heart of san francisco's sunset district at noriega and 32nd. today, a nonprofit that describes itself as a group that defends civil liberties but what the southern poverty law center calls a hate group is getting involved. they say where the city already approved to put a dispensary is illegal. >> no matter how strong a lobby these marijuana dispensaries may have, they still must comply with the law. the law is very clear. >> reporter: he says the law states dispensaries must be at least 600 feet from anywhere a child congregates, that includes places like the church and school he says are well within that distance. and he says, he has the community backing his efforts,

too. >> we have signatures from almost half of the property owners the parents in that community saying they don't want this center. >> reporter: the dispensary will be run by former oakland mayor jean quan and her husband dr. floyd huen. the doctor already serves as medical adviser for the apothecarium that has a branch already on market street. apothecarium wants nothing to do with the pj i saying there's more distress about the change to the neighborhood. in a statement they said: >> reporter: if the board of supervisors rejects this appeal, the pacific justice institute says they will seriously consider taking this to court. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. a legal showdown is you understand way in oakland right now over whether social media companies can be held liable for what users post. this all stems from a lawsuit brought on by the family of a long beach state student who

was killed during the 2015 terror attacks in paris. the parents of 23-year-old nohemi gonzalez accuse google, facebook and twitter of helping isis carry out the attacks. the tech giants claim the lawsuit has no merit and say they do work to remove terrorist content that violates terms when they are made aware of it. activists are protesting statewide today calling on lawmakers to pass legislation for affordable housing. kpix 5's jessica flores is at one of the protests in pleasant hill. >> reporter: protestors are here in pleasant hill at the office of the california apartment association. they are protesting the association because the association supports limits on rent control. protestors are demanding a statewide freeze on rent increases. they also want lawmakers to repeal the rental housing act that pans rent control for single-family homes built after 195, banning it. it allows landlords to raise market rates for those units. many landlords say repealing the law would put them out of

business but tenant groups say rising rents are forcing families into homelessness. >> there are a lot of tenants in all -- all over the -- all over california but here in the bay area especially that are struggling to make their rent. and when they are receiving rent increases from $200 to$600 from one month to the next it's hard to live. >> reporter: in a statement, the california apartment association says in part: ab1506 would repeal the rental housing act. in pleasant hill, jessica flores, kpix 5. white house leaks are front and center in washington today. mola lenghi reports, the disclosures are pitting some members of president trump's team against each other. >> reporter: the new white house communications director anthony scaramucci lashed out

last night claiming someone leaked his financial information. he tweeted: >> reporter: he named white house chief of staff reince priebus. it appeared on politico's website showing his assets are worth as much as $85 million and leaking the form is not a felony. it's public information. scaramucci later deleted the tweet and spoke this morning on cnn. >> i understand the law. i know that there was a public disclosure mechanism in my financial forms. what i'm upset about is the process and the junk pool, the dirty pool, in terms of the way this stuff is being done. and the leaking won't stop. >> reporter: scaramucci says he and the president have a good idea of who is responsible for the leaks. >> when i put out a tweet, i put rhines's name in the tweet they are all making at sumtion that it's him because journalists know who the leakers are. so if reince priebus wants to explain he is not a leaker let

him do that. >> reporter: scaramucci was hired in part by president trump to get to the bottom of the leaks which have incensed the president since he took office. chief washington correspondent john dickerson said this morning not all leaks are bad. >> white house needs leaks. they need relationships with reporters to float things out there without making them official. >> reporter: president trump does not see the value of leaks land stop them. mola lenghi for cbs news, the white house. >> and all of this comes as the new poll shows president trump's approval rating has hit a new low here in california. a group says only 25% of californians think the spread doing a good job. that is down from 30% in january. meanwhile, the senate is preparing for a long day ahead as lawmakers debate the healthcare legislation. republican leaders say the skinny plan repeals certain parts of obamacare such as a

within the next few weeks -- the t-s-a says: any electronic item larger than a phone will have to be put in a get ready for some new security rules the next time you fly. within the next few weeks, the tsa says any electronic item larger than a cell phone will have to be put in a separate bin during screening. that includes tablets computers, ereaders and hand- held game consoles. the tsa is a star on instagram with huge followers and more than 3 million likes.

it's funny and educational to share what you can and can't bring on planes. kris van cleave met the man taking those posts to new heights. >> reporter: the tsa is bossy, shoes off, arms up, small liquids but they can be pretty funny at least online. instagram aims to show the agency's human side by posting a litany of items people try to bring on planes. >> what's that? >> a voodoo head made from a goat. that's what i love about this job. >> reporter: from post- apocalyptic fully loaded gas masks to plenty of guns and propane tanks you needed to have on a flight, the tsa has seen it all. this dead body is a movie prop and was cleared to fly. bob burns, blogger bog, runs

the tsa instagram. his endearing combination of weird items and corny captions have earned him two webby nominations, 750,000 followers and the number 4 spot on rolling stone's list of must follows. that's ahead of beyonce. >> purpose of the instagram account is to kind of show people all the things we're finding nationwide and educate people on what you can and can't bring. >> reporter: the tsa is also on twitter where from this command center outside washington, they offer up to 1,000 realtime answers a day to more straightforward questions, like, can i carry on this facemask? you can't carry it on. but you can check it. >> our goal was only to be able to help passengers and i think in the end, um, that this program has really helped to soften the public perception of tsa. >> reporter: a softer image bob's helped build one light at a tomb. kris van cleave, cbs news. twitter's stock is down after news of a stall in user growth. there was no increase in active

we have tropical storm irwin, then we have hurricane hilary. all together, they are churning up the swells and by this weekend a beach hazard statement in effect for all of our south-facing beaches. so yeah, a hurricane can affect our weather. we have dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves at the beaches and i want to be very mindful of that. i mention that because people will be flocking to the beaches this weekend with the hot weather inland. today, nearly 80 on the sand in santa cruz as bright sunshine -- don't forget the sunblock. sunset at 8:22. and by then, these are the temperatures we will report into our weather logs. nearly 70 in pacifica. low 70s to high 70s around the rim of the bay. nearly 90 in redwood city. nearly 100 throughout the tri- valley. we'll hit 100 degrees in brentwood and the discovery bay area, antioch. i got to tell you, one of our weather watchers, alan hughes in lower lake, which is in the

north bay, he reported 100 yesterday. so easily about 102 there. >> we are getting used to it? >> not at all. shelf life. you want to store it for two or three days and that's it. when it has a nice give to the touch, you're ready to enjoy. not in the refrigerator. that juice inside won't be so good. so when you bring them home, on the counter 2 or 3 days, get a napkin and enjoy. i would eat this one right now.
