to the victim's brother about how the shooting allegedly unfolded. >> it's shocking that it happened to him. you never know. life is so short. >> reporter: friends stopped to leave flowers and peek inside jim's liquor mart. john ly is his brother hugh, friends calling him charlie. friends say he owned the liquor store and has for years. >> i have known him since before i had kids. my oldest is 16 years old. >> reporter: charlie was taking a break last night while his wife ran the register. the robber came in before 11:00 pointing a gun at his wife. >> he pulled out a gun and pointed it at her and told her, open the register. give me the money. when my brother heard that, he stood up and said no! and then the robber shot him in the chest. >> reporter: the wife later told john she tried to call 911 while the robber was still

inside the store. >> robber say, did you call 911, i shoot you, too and she struggle while holding husband in hands. >> reporter: they say ly was a father of four sons, a hard worker, sometimes pulling 14- hour days, someone who will be missed by the community. >> very shocking. my whole family. >> reporter: family members closed this up gate this morning. friends have stopped by, some of them even leaving flowers. meantime, police are searching for the shooter. they say that person took off on foot but they are hoping video from surveillance cameras like these will help them catch the shooter in. san jose, sandra osborne, kpix 5. happening now, police and atf agents have descended on an apartment complex in south san francisco on windcrest lane. no word why law enforcement is there but they are focusing on a garage for hours. the chp is investigating a crash at a shop in hayward.

police say the driver of this white shan plowed into the auto body shop on mission boulevard about 8 a.m. one person was inside the van at the time. he was injured. another vehicle inside the shop was damaged. the two suspects accused of murdering a photographer at san francisco's twin peaks will face a judge for the first time since their arrests. investigators say lamonte mims of patterson and fantasy decuir of san francisco shot and killed a 71-year-old man last month in a robbery. mims is a convicted suspect, 19 years old. both will be in court today. two east bay cities have been dealing with bad tasting water. there's a taste in brentwood's drinking water, dirty or earthy and it smells like mold. but the city of brentwood claims the water is safe. the city blames an algae bloom in the delta where the city gets its water. >> the water is safe to use in the drink and meets all

standards. we have already taken steps to address the odor and taste issues. it will take a couple of days to filter through the system. >> this has happened before typically after long periods of hot weather. and official in dublin say that the water there is also safe appear e. coli was found in a sample last week -- the water there is also safe after an e. coli sample was found in the sample last week. they have treated it with chlorine and it's now safe to drink. the water district usually flushes the system every year but didn't do so for two years because of the drought. today president trump is talking about the opiod epidemic. he called it a major problem for our country in a tweet this morning. his budget asks for $10.7 billion for drug treatment which is a $200 million increase. but it would cut nearly as much from abuse prevention. the opiod commission asked mr.

trump to declare a national health emergency. he has yet to respond. meanwhile, the trump administration continues to press leaders in asia for more action against north korea. as weijia jang reports, this comes just days after the u.n. enacted its strongest a single shores against pyongyang. >> reporter: the state-run news agency announced the missile launches as an warning to americans, we shouldn't feel safe. 72% say they are uneasy about a possible conflict with north korea. the trump administration is hopeful that new u.n. economic sanctions will help resolve the situation. >> we have to enforce these to be, um, for this to be legitimate. we have to hold these countries accountable. >> reporter: president trump has secretary of state rex tillerson talking with partners in asia to help enforce the sanctions hoping the loss of money will curb the communist country's nuclear ambitions. >> the north korean regime is going to have to choose. they are not going to be able

to continue their program and keep their people and military happy. they will have to make choices. >> reporter: president trump praise the sanctions on twitter this morning saying, after many years of failure, countries are coming together to finally address the dangers posed by north korea. we must be tough and decisive. but he has more work to do to convince the american people. 35% of those surveyed by cbs news say they are confident in the president's ability to handle the north korean situation. weijia jang, cbs news the state department. the president is studying a draft report on climate change leaked to the "new york times." he calls global warming a hoax. the report he is studying says the impact of climate change is being felt right now creating higher temperatures and even causing extreme weather events. the research was done by 13 federal agencies. the trump administration must approve the report but one scientist says that researchers are worried that the president

will suppress it instead. five people are dead and 63 others wounded after a strong shallow earthquake shook a region in china near a famous national park. the 6.5 quake struck an area bordered by the provinces of szechuan and [ non-english language ] the people who died were tourists. the park is known for waterfalls and limestone formation. shallow earthquakes cause more damage than deeper ones, according to experts. in houston, heavy rain caused flash floods this morning turning roads noris. the hardest hit county got 4 to 7 inches of rain flooding cars and threatening homes. many streets and a few freeways were flooded. as of early this morning, city leaders in houston reported nearly 2 dozen water rescues but so far, there are no reports of serious injuries. and the rain is not over. there's a 40% chance of rain tomorrow morning with a flash flood warning in effect until tomorrow afternoon. it could take months to make the area around a massive sinkhole in florida safe.

right now it's larger than the wingspan of a boeing 747. cbs reporter manuel bojorquez says it has left homes unliveable. >> reporter: officials describe the sinkhole now filled with water as the largest in the county in 30 years. it swallowed two homes in this tampa suburb when it suddenly appeared july 14. after it widened again over the weekend, five more houses were condemned and even more families were displaced. >> the news that we're not going to be able to go back in ever to the house is sad. but it offers closure, it's not safe to live in. >> reporter: the county found cracked walls or unstable foundations in the house it wants demolished. >> this is a catastrophic financial event for some people. these are the biggest developments people have. >> reporter: officials say they don't know if the recent instability means the sinkhole is still growing or if it aggravated existing depressions nearby. >> that area was a lake before.

who knows, maybe it's going to be become a lake in the future. >> reporter: as part of the first phase of the clean-up, crews dumped 125 truckloads of uncrushed lime rock on the edge of the giant hole to keep the banks from collapsing. next, waste trucks will pump out contaminated water while a backhoe floating on a barge removes debris from the center of the sinkhole. >> the county contractors expects it to be cleaned up in a few days for a million dollars. official may decide it's best not to fill it with dirt and leave the water where it is. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, land o lakes, florida. >> there are no reports of deaths or injuries, but crews haven't finished stabilizing the banks or clearing the debris of the sinkhole. change the way people commute. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: that's all it takes to unlock a limebike and take off. the biggest difference with these bikes, there's no set docking station. >> as soon as you're done, you just lock it back up. [ dingdong ] >> and then it is available for the next rider. >> reporter: the city hopes people will use the biking to commute to and from the ferry terminal, bart station and caltrain but worry that without a set docking area, people will park the bikes where they're blocking sidewalks or driveways. >> limebike is going to be very responsive to making sure that bikes are not blocking somebody's right of way, that they are neatly parked and so we're going to be monitoring closely. >> reporter: another concern? vandalism. it's happened to other bikeshare bicycles in san francisco in the mission district and also near dolores park. >> anytime we're entering a city, we are aware of the challenges that come with that. in our seattle launch, we -- of course, there are similar, um,

neighborhoods where we might be prone to vandalism. >> reporter: but residents here in south san francisco say they would welcome the new transportation options. >> traffic is such a huge issue not just here but everywhere. so can't hurt to try it. see what happens. >> i was really amazed that i can just get a bike out here and go to bart and drop it off and be done. >> reporter: by next month, limebike says all 300 bikes will be in place and ready for use. in south san francisco, katie nielsen, kpix 5. uber hitting the brakes on a comeback. the company's cofounder and former ceo travis kalanick, the "wall street journal" reporting he won't be returning to leadership. in an email obtained by the journal, the cofounder and chairman told staff on monday, quote, we are committed to hiring a new world class ceo to lead uber. kalanick resigned after several main investors urged him to step down. looking at the markets on wall street right now, the dow

is around 22,110 down about 8. in las vegas, the latest temptation for tens of millions of visitors is the legal use of marijuana. but there is a catch. mark strassmann is on the strip with what some say is a discrepancy in the law. >> reporter: anything goes in vegas, right? wrong! on the strip, buying marijuana legally is one thing. smoking it is another. nevada law mandates that legally-bought marijuana be consumed in a private residence. nothing public. that includes casinos, hotels, cars and sidewalks. this person who owns this dispensary says the law puts most of his customers in a tough spot. >> about 70 to 80% are tourists and they have no private space to go to because they don't live here. that's the problem. >> reporter: in the eight states that have legalized marijuana, implementing the new drug laws has been challenging for consumers. for instance, people in california and massachusetts may possess it or grow it but not buy or sell it legally

until next year. sales are legal in colorado, nevada and washington. but for now, public consumption is banned. a state senator supported legalizing marijuana here. >> people are already buying it and using. so this is not something new. it's just let's take the next step and provide a venue for them where they can have fun. >> reporter: marijuana has a place in "sin city." [ laughter ] >> marijuana is perfect for "sin city"! [ laughter ] >> reporter: but for now, vegas casinos and hotels have too much at stake to allow it. gaming is a $13 billion a year business in this state. casino licenses require following federal, state and local laws. 25-year-old david harper is visiting from houston. the marijuana he bought legally, he will smoke illegally. >> you have to be discreet, but oh, yeah, sure. >> reporter: you're not the only one? >> i'm definitely not the only one. consensus on the solution. the local marijuana industry is pushing for legal pot cafes the kind you see overseas in amsterdam and the kind that colorado will have later this summer. mark strassmann, cbs news, las vegas. >> the chair of the nevada gaming commission says casinos must follow federal law and until federal law changes, marijuana will not be allowed near a casino. hackers posted new stolen hbo files online including draft visits from five draft scripts from "game of thrones" that haven't aired yet. hbo denies the system is compromised. the hackers are demanding a ransom. i have known neda for almost a decade! we worked together in sacramento. >> that makes me feel old. >> we were babies when we met! >> i'm filling in for roberta. i have good news at the airport. the delays are gone.

there are delays because of the low clouds keeping the planes from getting into town, into sfo, and now everyone is flying smoothly. current conditions, take a look at our temperatures. concord 75. oakland 62. 75 in livermore. san francisco 59. staying cool along the coastline, 68 for santa rosa. so here's a six-hour loop since 6 a.m. the clouds really haven't left us alone especially along the coast. they are starting to brighten up in fairfield, san jose, seeing some sun. we'll get some sunshine this afternoon. we will even along parts of the coastline. and those low clouds will be back yet again as they do, sticking around tomorrow through tomorrow morning again. our temperatures will stay on average for where they should be this time of the year. so they are going to stay pretty consistently on average for the next few days. here's a look at our winds now picking up a bit. coming out of the west- northwest here in san francisco, 9-mile-per-hour winds in oakland, 10 for you in san ramon. as we move out further north, you can see them pick up a lot

there in fairfield at 20-mile- per-hour winds. and we are watching these waves because tomorrow you might start to feel the breeze even more. here's what's going on. we have this upper low and it's going to cause the pressure gradients to increase and that's going to increase our winds, as well. so this afternoon, you will start to feel a little bit of that slight breeze but tomorrow, we'll get gustier for you. here's a look at your highs for today. this afternoon concord hitting 88. 74 in oakland. and 69 for san francisco. 79 to the north in santa rosa. 80 degrees for you in napa. here's our sunset tonight at 8:10. it's going to be beautiful. sunrise tomorrow morning nice and early, 6:20. we'll be here of course with your forecast. roberta should be back tomorrow. and your game forecast for those of you going to watch the giants and the cubs, bring a jacket. 7:00 tonight 63 degrees and cool. that seven-day forecast for you, inland temperatures going to be sunny and in the low 90s. and then across the bay temperatures are going to stay right in the low 70s to upper 60s. and the coastline cool in the

launched its first *instagram account showcasing photos shot on -- what else -- i- phones! apple has historically avoided co latforms. but apple launched an instagram account shot on iphones. apple has historically avoided competitor platforms but in the last couple of years it has opened accounts on twitter and on snapchat. all right. from apple to another kind of fruit. fresh grocer tony tantillo has tips on lychee. >> reporter: ell, today's tip of the day is going to be is lychee fruit. this is dessert in this little package loaded with sugar, delicious. but selection and storage is very important. otherwise, these are going to be disappointing. when you buy it, make sure all the lychee fruit if they are sold in bulk or bags, they have tore bright red and fresh. store them in the refrigerator. storing them at room temperature or in a little bit of a warmer area, that nice red
