good morning from the studio 57 cbs news headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. the man accused of ramming a car into a crowd in charlottesville is due in court. the incident happened saturday at a rally of white nationalists. the white house issued a statement after backlash against president trump's initial response. hena doba is in new york with the latest. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. is charged with second-degree murder and could also face federal charges depending on the outcome of an fbi investigation. witnesses say on saturday the driver accelerated before plowing into the crowd, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others. the man suspected of ramming his car into a crowd in charlottesville, virginia, is scheduled to appear in court today. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. faces several charges

including second-degree murder. he's accused of killing 32-year-old heather heyer and injuring others. there was a plan to remove a confederate statue from the public park. vigils, rallies, and marches were held across the country yesterday in support of the victims and against hate, from fr. to chicago, michigan to indiana. >> a man described how he took the hit to save his fiance's life. >> i heard tires screech. i look up and i seen people getting thrown in the air. the only thing i could do was push my fiance out of the way. >> president trump faced criticism from both sides of the aisle for not strongly

condemning white supremacists at the rally. virginia's governor called on all to take a stand. >> tell the white supremacists, the neo-nazis, the kkk, tell them all, we've had enough of it. >> specifically condemning the extremist groups and calling for national unity. his high school teacher described him as interested in military history. >> thank you so much, hena. the ntsb and faa are helping to investigate a helicopter crash near charlottesville that killed two state troopers. it went down saturday. it was sent to assist with the rally in charlottesville. virginia's governor remembers the troopers and the woman killed in the car attack. >> but for this hatred and

bigotry that occurred here yesterday, berke and jay would have been home with their families. heather would have been getting up today and enjoying life. >> both troopers of the helicopter crash died at the scene. they favored a heavy clash. jason kessler yesterday blamed local police for failing to keep the peace during the rally saying they didn't do their jobs. >> what happened yesterday was the result of the charlottesville police officers refusing to do their job. they stood down and did not follow through with the agreed upon security arrangements. >> kessler is planning another news conference today in washington. he'll be joined by fellow white nationalist leader richard spencer. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling out president trump in the aftermath of the deadly violence in charlottesville.

as for his critics, it's not what he didn't say but for what he did say. >> reporter: president trump was called out for being too vague over the incidents that occurred in charlottesville on saturday. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides. on many sides. >> reporter: he also refused an opportunity to call out white nationalists. >> mr. president do you want the support of these white national groups to say they support you, mr. president trump? >> i think the president can be clear when he wants to be. he needs to be clear here. >> reporter: south carolina senator lindsey graham said he needs to call out hate.

fired. he said president trump needed to single out those and distance himself from his chief strategist steve bannon and his former employer "breitbart news." >> you've also got this bannon/breitbart influence which is a snag on the president. if the president wants to execute that legislative agenda which is so prominent for the people, then he has to move away from that sort of bannon/breitbart nonsense. >> scaramucci also said the president needs to move, quote, more into the mainstream. ahead on "cbs this mornin"," attorney general jeff sessions and the white house response to the violence. the mayor of lexington, kentucky, is planning to respond to the events in charlottesville with action. james gray wants to remove two confederate-era statues from the lawn of a former courthouse.

he's targeted john hunt morgan and john breckinridge. senior u.s. national security officials say a military confrontation with north korea is not imminent, but they're cautioning that the possibility is greater than it was a decade ago. china's president appealed for cooler heads in a phone conversation with president trump over the weekend. last week the president warned north korean leader kim jong-un that the u.s. military was, quote, locked and loaded. in iraq two american soldiers have been killed while conducting combat operations. the military said initial reports indicate the incident was not due to enemy contact. five other soldiers were wounded. none of them were identified. and in west africa at least 20 people were killed after suspected islamic extremists opened fire ataturkish

monday, already? >> let's get it started. summertime is winding up. we had a summertime weather pattern this morning. mostly cloudy skies and overcast conditions with areas of drizzle. it is foggy outside and temperature-wise, 56 in santa rosa and 57 in san francisco and later today, the coolest day of the work week. temperatures are a good 10 degrees below average. 60s and 70s bayside and we will have mid-80s in cloverdale. summer is wrapping up and back to school for some kids today. do expect to see some extra activity on the roadways and be on the lookout for those little guys.
