we sit down with his father... who's waiting for answers. now at noon, a bay area man is feared dead in the barcelona terror attack. we sit down with his father, who is waiting for answers. good afternoon, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. we have team coverage on the attack. jane ferguson is following the investigation in barcelona. first up, kpix 5's jackie ward, who spoke to the father of a man who went missing during the

chaos. jackie. >> reporter: michelle, the secretary of state has confirmed that one american is among the 14 dead following the attacks in barcelona and dan tucker of walnut creek is almost certain that it's his son, jared. >> from the time that the -- time that it happened until this morning, we have been going back and forth but not really knowing anything. >> reporter: dan tucker's son jared had been celebrating his one year wedding anniversary with his wife heidi this past week. this is the picture heidi took of him a couple of days ago. jared in the water off the coast of spain. jared and heidi were walking around barcelona yesterday when he told her he had to use the bathroom. moments later, the van plowed into dozens of people and heidi couldn't find jared. >> i don't understand how somebody, anybody, could do that type of thing to innocent

people. it's beyond my comprehension to understand how anybody could do that. >> reporter: as images of the attack took over media outlets, dan says he saw a video clip of a man that looked like jared. he was wearing a blue shirt, tan pants, and had blonde hair. >> but there was a person kneeling with him. so we were encouraged to feel that if it was an injury as opposed to anything serious, but he wasn't moving. and, um, so we held on to that this morning. we got a text from heidi. and it indicated that the conversation with the officials had more to do with identification than it did with health or possibly an injury. >> reporter: today, dan is just

trying to hold on. >> i have a relatively strong defense mechanism that doesn't allow me to go down that path really hard. but it is hard. >> reporter: this was jared's first time ever taking a trip overseas to europe. he and heidi were expected to fly back tomorrow. in walnut creek, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> jackie it's so heartbreaking to hear the father. can you tell us more about jared? do they have children? what does he do for work? >> reporter: jared was loved by everyone he knew according to his father and he has three teenaged girls in the bay area. he worked alongside his father in the family-owned pool business since he was 16 years old. his father said they were great friends. back to you. >> thank you. meanwhile, police in spain are working to track down suspects in yesterday's attack. they have connected the barcelona rampage to an attack at a nearby resort town. cbs reporter jane ferguson has the very latest. >> reporter: in the last 24

hours, the spanish authorities have shot dead five suspects in a shootout, arrested four more and they continue to hunt for attackers or accomplices in the attacks here. [ yelling and gunfire ] >> reporter: this was the scene in cambrils, spain, last night as a fifth terror suspect died in a shootout with police. this man caught the firefight on his cell phone. >> to me, i thought he was high, on something, because so many times and get back up and then when he was walking to the police, he was smiling. he was laughing. he was like daring, say come on, come on. >> reporter: police say the suspected terrorist in cambrils were wearing belts with fake explosives like the attackers in barcelona hours earlier they drove their car into pedestrians, killing one person and injuring at least 7 others. authorities believe both spanish attacks are linked. the attackers part of a

terrorist cell who originally planned a wave of attacks using gas canisters. "islamic state" has claimed responsibility. spanish media are reporting moussa okibare was the driver, trying to hit as many as possible. here on the scene of the first attack at las ramblas, pedestrians are returning. many coming here to the makeshift memorial. some recalling the fear of yesterday's attack. >> i heard this crashing noise. i heard screams. i turned around and looked. it was like an avalanche of hundreds of people running. >> reporter: earlier, hundreds joined spain's king for a moment of silence for the victims of the attack. then the crowd erupted in applause chanting, i am not afraid. the atmosphere on the streets of barcelona is of solidarity. thousands have taken to the streets today, especially coming here after work to show their support for the police,

to say that they are not intimidated and also, to pay their respects to the victims. we have also heard today the sad cases of some of the details of those victims, including details of the youngest victim who was a 3- year-old spanish child. >> jane, the investigation is intensifying at this hour. what are authorities focusing on now? what's next? >> reporter: they're chasing down suspects. this was certainly a bigger network than just one or two lone wolves. they have also given some details about how, in the car of the attackers, in cambrils where they were trying to attack people in the street 60 miles south of barcelona, they found knives and an axe. and that's eerily reminiscent of the attack that we saw in london in june which was also isis-inspired where you saw cars driving into people on london bridge and then people entering into a market and busy areas to try to attack civilians with knives. so it would seem there are

parallels between the attack they wanted and the attack they had in london. >> jane ferguson in spain, thank you. [ pause ] >> we'll bring you more updates on the investigation as as soon as we get them. the other big story today, breaking news from washington. steve bannon is out as white house chief strategist. the news coming from the trump administration just a short time ago. the move follows weeks of speculation that bannon wouldn't last much longer in the trump administration. cbs reporter weijia jang is following the developments from washington. >> reporter: white house chief strategist steve bannon helped put president trump in the white house. and now bannon is out. the president's press secretary issued a statement saying, white house chief of staff john kelly and steve bannon have mutually agreed today would be steve's last day. we are grateful for his service and wish him the best.

speculation about bannon's position had been brewing for a while. earlier this week, president trump was noncommittal about bannon's future. >> i like mr. bannon. he is a friend of mine. but mr. bannon came on very late. you know that. i went through 17 senators, governors, and i won all the primaries. mr. bannon came on very much later than that. but we'll see what happens with mr. bannon. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that the new chief of staff john kelly was eager to clear out internal west wing rivalries. bannon had reportedly clashed for months with other trump advisers including the president's son-in-law, jared kushner. and national security adviser hr mcmaster. >> do you think they're going to give you your country back without a fight, you are sadly mistaken. >> reporter: bannon made a name for himself running breitbart.com a conservative website that catered to the "alt right" and he advised the president to take national strategy such as proposing a trade war with china. weijia jang, cbs news, the

white house. >> steve bannon becomes the 8th senior white house official who has been let go since president trump took office behind michael flynn, mcfarland, walsh, scaramucci, dubke, sean spicer and reince priebus. developing news here in the bay area, two off-duty oakland firefighters hit by gunfire as they were leaving an event for families in the south bay. one of the firefighters was killed. jessica flores is live in san jose with the latest. >> reporter: kenny, right now the firefighters' names are not being released. but we are told that they recently graduated from the oakland fire academy. meanwhile, over in oakland, firefighters are in mourning learning that two of their own were shot and killed in san jose, leaving a family-friendly event. the lights over 280 in san jose in the early-morning hours. the procession of oakland firefighters was on the way to valley medical center after

learning a san jose shooting left one of their own dead and another badly wounded. the two off-duty oakland firefighters were leaving a night market at a brewing company at 9:30 p.m. when they were shot at 7th and taylor streets. the shooter got away. >> when officers arrived, they located two victims who were suffering from at least one gunshot wound each. those two victims were transported to a local area hospital. >> reporter: a 30-year-old oakland firefighter was pronounced dead at the hospital. the second victim a 26-year-old was listed in stable condition. firefighters went to the hospital. >> there is a close bond that officers and firefighters share. and we suffer when they suffer. we just want them to know they're in our thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: officials searched for evidence and detained several people this morning. it's unclear if any of them is

a suspected shooter. >> we may be look at multiple suspects. so again, if they in fact did ditch the gun or guns, you know, they may be in yards or cars. things like that. so if people see anything out of the ordinary, call the san jose police department. >> reporter: police say they are working to determine what happened. they will be talking to witnesses, looking at surveillance video. but at this point, no motive. reporting live in san jose, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. new at noon, windows smashed as rocks are thrown through the windows of a synagogue in alameda. kpix 5's katie nielson reports. >> reporter: michelle, if you take a look back behind me, you can see the plywood boards that are covering the shattered classrooms here at temple israel alameda. the damage was discovered early thursday morning and surveillance video shows someone throwing rocks at the glass front doors.

the president of the congregation said during a recent meeting, the synagogue could be targeted, especially in the wake of the white nationalist rally in charlottesville and similar rallies planned this weekend for the bay area. those who work here say they don't understand the motive for damaging their place of worship. >> the congregation is wonderful. they're very open, loving. i just don't know what type of a person would want to do this. >> reporter: alameda police say so far, they are not investigating this as a hate crime. they say there was no evidence like graffiti or antisemitic symbols to show the temple was specifically targeted. congregation members say they are asking the community to come out for a vigil tonight at 7:00 just to show solidarity with the members of the temple. they are expecting several hundred people to attend. live in alameda, katie nielsen, kpix 5. new at noon, federal agents in hazmat gear are in redwood city.

killed and eight others were injured in a stabbing attack in ern city of turk police in finland are searching for suspects after two people were killed and eight others injured in a stabbing attack in the western city of turko. one suspect was shot in the leg and detained by police. authorities say it's too early to link the attack to international terrorism. he cause is under investigation. security is stepped up across finland. we are counting down three days to go until a rare total solar eclipse. as the excitement builds, educators are hoping the eclipse will inspire a new generation of scientists. the upcoming super shadow has prompted space lessons across the country and it's fueling interest among young people.
