rain, strong winds and flooding as the storm could strengthen to a hurricane. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquaters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. just one winning ticket was sold for last night's massive powerball jackpot. the numbers are 6, 7, 16, 23, 26, and the powerball 4. the estimated prize, $758.7 million and the lucky ticket was sold in massachusetts. it's the second largest lottery jackpot in u.s. history. selling is here in new york with more. good morning. >> good morning, lottery players across the country scooped up those powerball tickets in hopes of beating the miserable odds

and winning this massive jackpot. it's the largest grand prize ever won by a single lottery ticket in u.s. history. there is a winner for the $758 million powerball. lottery officials say the ticket was sold at the handy variety convenience store in watertown, massachusetts. just six miles northwest of boston. population 33,000. there's only a single winning ticket meaning unless the buyer was part of a pool one person or family can claim the entire prize. a scenario players all over the nation say they dreamed about. >> buy a private island down in the caribbean and drop you a postcard sometime. >> reporter: it's still early but the winner hasn't yet made him or himself known. for many players if they were holding that golden ticket they prefer never to go public. >> i'd like to stay anonymous anyway because i don't want you to know i got some money. >> reporter: bad news if the winner was hoping to stay out of

the spotlight. only six states allow you to not come forward if you're holding the big ticket and massachusetts is not one of them. most winners would favor the cash payment which would be $480 million. the winner though should expect to spend about 40% of that in taxes. it's not bad news for everybody else though. six other tickets won $2 million a piece and 34 others are 1 million dollars winners. so other winners out there as well. >> check those tickets. thank you so much. well, tropical storm harvey is headed toward the texas gulf coast this morning and could become a hurricane before it makes land fall sometime tomorrow. harvey is slowly moving northwest with sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. a hurricane watch is in effect from north of port mansfield to the pass. folks along the texas coast are stocking up and boarding up and building up sandbags. it's expected to produce 15

inches of rain causing coastal flooding and in texas a state of disaster has been declared in 30 counts. residents along the coast are being urged to seek higher ground. the white house isn't backing down from president trump's vow to shutdown the government if he doesn't get the money to build a wall along the border with mexico. speaker paul ryan said he doesn't think that's necessary. the president made the threat during a rally in phoenix in tuesday in which he also railed against the media for its coverage about his comments about the events in charlottesville. he took a different tone during a scripted speech to veterans. >> reporter: president trump arrived back at the white house hours after delivering a message of unity before the nation's largest veterans group. >> it's time to heal the wounds that divide us and seek a new unity based on the common values that unite us.

we are one people with one home and one great flag. >> reporter: less than a day earlier the president went off on the media during a rally in phoenix for its coverage of his response to the racially charged protest in charlottesville. >> if you want to discover the source of the division in our country, look no further than the fake news and the crooked media. >> reporter: the president read from remarks he issued about the violence. >> we condemn in the strongest possible term this display of hatred, bigotry and violence. >> reporter: but he left out the part of the statement that caused all the controversy. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. >> reporter: but here in washington they're fighting back against reports that the president is locked in a bitter feud with mitch mcconnell. according to the new york times a phone call earlier this month

triggered the conflict during which the president paraded mcconnell for the favor to overhaul obamacare. >> i said get to work and let's get it done. >> reporter: both leaders issued separate statements today saying they remain united on shared priorities. cbs news, the white house. in charlottesville, two statues of confederate generals were covered up. workers covered a statue of robert e. lee with a black drape. later a statue of stone wall jackson was also covered. the city council decided to cover the civil war monuments earlier this week. the response to the rally earlier this month say the statues eventually have to be taken down. one of the organizers of the white supremacist rally turned himself into police. he was wanted for the illegal use of tear gas and malicious bodily injury. he admits he pepper sprayed a

counter protestor on august 11th. he faces three felony charges. the army suspended several drill sergeants at fort benning in georgia following allegations of sexual misconduct. a female recruit accused a drill sergeant of sexual assault. that investigation lead to more allegations of sexual misconduct. so far no one has been charged. more than 11,000 soldiers are stationed full time at fort benning. a basic training base near the alabama state line. and the navy says there's no evidence to suggest that the collision between a destroyer and oil tanker east of singapore was intentional or a result of sabotage. a body found at sea by malaysian forces is is not one of the missing sailors from the uss

john s. mccain. ten sailors were missing following that monday. they appear to have suffered serious injuries. last year diplomats working in havana started complaining about hearing loss and headaches. cbs news learned that american doctor diagnosed some with mild traumatic brain injury and likely damage to the central nervous system. the cuban government denies any involvement. this morning a second suspect was arrested in connection with a threat to a concert in the netherlands. the concert by the american rock group was cancelled after dutch police received a terror warning from spanish police. a man driving a van containing gas tanks was also detained. spanish officials say the van was not connected to last week's attack that killed 15 people.

being called a hero and the texas voter i.d. law is tossed out. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the dallas morning news reports the federal judge struck down a controversial voter i.d. law in texas. the judge says it intentionally discriminates against minorities. this is the 10th time its been struck down. the new york times looks at protests in support of nfl quarterback collin kaepernick. hundreds rallied outside nfl headquaters in new york yesterday. protestors say no team signed the free agent because of his political views. kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem last season to call attention to racial

are expected to speak at an annual meeting in wyoming. they'll give their take on the global economy. yesterday stocks in wall street gave up gains from the day before. the dow fell 87 points s&p dropped 8 and nasdaq headed 19 points down. sales of new homes tanked lost month dropping 9.4%. that's the sharpest in nearly a year. it's driven average prices higher nationwide making homes too expensive for some would be buyers but sales the first 7 months of the year more than 9% higher than they were during the same period last year. amazon is coming close tore buying whole foods. they approved the nearly $14 billion deal yesterday. they had investigated whether the take over would cut competition and decided not to look into the issue further. the two companies now need to finalize the deal. it's said to bring big changes to how people shop for groceries online. spacex is revealing peek of its new space suit.

it happened yesterday morning and forced dozens of evacuations in a small village near the border. there's reports of damaged buildings and blocked roads. a close call with a shark for a surfer in cape cod. what's believed to be a great white bumped up against his paddle board yesterday morning about 30 feet from shore. >> i didn't see it either coming or going, the shark. it was like the impact was like being on a bicycle and getting hit by a car. it was just this bang, really intense. >> bigelow says he looked down to make sure that everything was still there. it was but his leg was bruised when it hit him. the shark did take a bite out of his board though.

the beach was closed for several hours. when samsung unveiled a new phone the company not only talked about it's latest features but also tried to reassure customers. >> samsung has a new smartphone. >> the galaxy note 8. >> reporter: the launch in new york was designed to show new features on the device but the company also had to address the past. >> none of us will ever forget what happened last year. >> reporter: in 2016 defective batteries caused some galaxy note 7s to catch on fire. the entire line had to be taken off the market. the new note 8 has a lithium ion battery but the company says it's different. >> what's different is the process we took to designing it. >> reporter: it's gone through extensive testing inside samsung and different experts.

hillary clinton is revealing new details about an encounter with donald trump during the presidential campaign in a new book. it's called what happened and it's published by a division of cbs. a portion of the audio version reported by clinton was released. >> no matter where i walked he followed me closely staring at me, making faces. >> reporter: it was the second presidential debate and in hillary clinton's telling of the story donald trump moved behind her breathing down her neck. only two days earlier the campaign was rocked by the tape in which he bragged about sexual assault. now they were on a small stage together. >> my skin crawled. it was one of those moments you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching, well, what would you do? you stay calm, keep smiling and carry on as if he weren't repeatedly invading your space?
