comes to san francisco in peace. on facebook, he blasted san francisco mayor lee for not speaking out about violence on the left. >> the the mayor of san francisco, i don't even know what his name is, i don't care what his name is. the truth is, though, if he truly was against violence, then he would go out on tv and he would say, i disavow all the violence. no. no. that's fine. it's fine to burn down san francisco if you're wearing all black. >> reporter: gibson says some of his invited guests are people of color so that proves he is not a white supremacist. but people associate his movement with white nationalism. so they are protesting. >> frisco resistance. [ non-english language ] >> reporter: in the mission, counter-protestors are making signs. >> his group does not represent our america. >> reporter: it's the past violence back and forth bickering online and in person

police hope weekend events will be peaceful. neda iranpour, kpix 5. a trump supporter arrested at a berkeley rally won't return to the rally sunday. kyle chapman is appeared in court this morning to be arraigned on felony charges. the judge ordered him to stay 30 yards away from the rally at civic center park in berkeley. chapman is accused of swinging a leaded stick at protestors at this rally at the same park back in march. he is currently being held on $135,000 bail. to the storm watch now. here's a live look at galveston, texas where people along the gulf coast are preparing for hurricane harvey. the storm is expected to pack a punch when it hits landfall tonight. we have a view of harvey from space restaurants capturing this image as they passed over it in the international space station station. we have team coverage on the storm. don champion reports from

corpus christi. first roberta gonzales tracking harvey from the weather center. >> this is a powerful hurricane that will strike the united states as a major hurricane and specifically taking a strike and direct aim on the coastline of texas. look how tightly coiled that eye is at this time. there was some light shearing occurring earlier but now it's gaining more strength and momentum off the gulf waters which are about 86 degrees outside of galveston. let's track the progressive move of this hurricane as it blasts onshore in the overnight hours about 1 a.m. central time. it will push onshore jogging to the for the and then stalls as it's downgraded to a category 2 hurricane. then once it stalls, it's going to produce a lot of rain, up to 25 inches between now and wednesday. perhaps up to 35 inches of rain in throughout isolated areas of

texas. so there us it on our satellite and radar map. cbs reporter don champion continues our team coverage live from corpus christi. don. >> reporter: good afternoon, roberta. we have been getting pounded with tropical storm-force winds for more than two hours now. the rain has certainly picked up. storm surge is already up along the coast here. and within the past hour, the governor made one final plea for people here to get out. skies are gray and the gulf is churning along the texas coast has hurricane harvey spins closer to shore. forecasters are warning it can be the most powerful storm to make landful in the u.s. since 2005. millions are in its path. >> we don't know what's going to happen. we don't know if we'll come back to home or the damage. it's bad, scary. >> reporter: many coastal residents are boarding up their homes and heading inland.

hotels are making people check out. school buses are shuttling hundreds out of corpus christi. thursday, babies from a neonatal intensive care unit were flown north to safety. but officials are concerned because not as many people are evacuating compared with previous storms. the national hurricane center is calling harvey life- threatening and says it could leave parts of the upper texas coast uninhabitable for weeks. harvey could deliver winds of over 110 miles an hour and a 15- foot storm surge when it arrives. >> the issue will be, once it makes landfall, it's just going to sit and meander over the texas coastline here. >> reporter: rainfall is predicted to be close to three feet in some areas. the governor of texas has already declared a preemptive state of disaster in 30 counties. right now, there are crews on standby across this region ready to carry out any water

rescues that may be needed. but official here have warned people that have stayed behind that there will come a point in time during the storm that those missions will no longer be possible. roberta, as awful as it is right now, it's hard to believe that this is only the beginning of this storm. >> right. you're getting pounded. don, can you tell us any more about the mandatory evacuation going on right now. >> reporter: yeah. there are several counties here who have issued mandatory evacuations. here in the city of corpus christi, one was not issued. but the mayor here was adamant in telling folks this need to evacuate. he also shared his personal tragedy. two years ago, he lost several family members in flash flooding including two of his grandchildren. so he has been sharing that story, telling folks here in the town though get out of here. >> don champion, be safe, thank you. the trump administration is

keeping an eye on the developments in texas as well as hurricane harvey approaches land. earlier today president trump tweeted, quote, i have spoken with governor abbott of texas and louisiana governor edwards. closely monitoring hurricane harvey developments and here to assist as needed. the president also tweeted this photo of himself receiving reports or harvey's possible impact. the trump administration is heading into its first major natural disaster without an appointed fema director or homeland security secretary. the previous secretary john kelly is now the president's chief of staff. just a short time ago, the trump administration turned its focus to venezuela. the president signing an executive order slapping sweeping financial sanctions on the country. the move bars banks from any new financial deals with the venezuelan government or a state-run oil giant. the white house says it's trying to keep the u.s. financial system from being complicit in venezuela's corruption. in the bay area, the san jose police department is launching a new campaign to

recruit members of the lgbt community. the department plans to use these ads which show the actual families of three officers, straight, gay and lesbian. chief garcia is expected to try to drum up interest in the police force during pride festivities in san jose this weekend. new at noon, in about 30 minutes the first smart train will carry its first passengers in the north bay. kpix 5's jessica flores was in santa rosa for the opening day celebrations. >> reporter: a milestone for the north bay. >> the smart train has officially arrived in town. >> reporter: it's the official grand opening of the smart train the first passenger train to run through sonoma and marin counties in more than 50 years. >> my grandfather was a conductor here in the '20s. he was the youngest conductor. so i brought him with me so he can ride the train. >> reporter: for the community, it's been a long time in the making. delays and then last week smart cleared its final hurdle getting the green light from the federal railroad administration. >> we been talking about this

toward texas... airlines are waiving "change fees." welcome back. this is a live look in galveston, texas where the national hurricane center has just upgraded moments ago this hurricane harvey from category 2 to category 3. it's off the coast and expected to make landfall overnight. the cat-3 hurricane expected to be one of the worst hurricanes in almost 12 years in the country. as hurricane harvey heads towards texas airlines are waiving change fees. most are relaxing rebooking policies for passengers set to fly to the region.

[ laughter ] >> so, um, so today we're talking about distemper because i have seen a case of that and it's actually prevalent now in the bay area. we don't really think about it that much because we have been vaccinating for decades so we don't see it but we are actually seeing it. so a reminder to make sure your pets are vaccinated correctly with the protocol that's

recommended by the veterinary institutions. this is a viruses that usually transmitted through the air. so keeping your dog away from another dog is not necessarily going to keep your pet safe. you need to actually be mindful when you have a puppy who hasn't been vaccinated to keep the dog in doors until your veterinarian tells us it's okay. it's almost uniformly fatal. almost. every once in a while a dog will manage to survive. but it's just a very horrible disease. it is. and it's so contagious. it's on your clothing. you know, you can carry it from one place to the other. so if your dog has been diagnosed with having distemper, you need to keep them inside. the symptoms you will see are initially some discharge from the eye and nose and then coughing and then fever and lethargy and lack of appetite and it becomes a neurological problem with seizures and after that they usually pass away. >> the only way to prevent this is vaccination? >> that's wait to go and avoiding dogs that could have it. and then roberta had mentioned about the heat and it reminded me that we haven't talked about this all summer. just a reminder because i

ell, today's tip of the day is going to be is with strawberry grapes. new varietal but now they are more common, you can enjoy them and many markets you see them and let me tell you something, they are fabulous! they are kind of have the texture of a concord grape with the strawberry flavor to 'em. but yet, they are beautiful little games. kind of look like a wine grape. and their sugar content is high of wine grapes. so when you buy them, let's talk about it, first, make sure beautiful color all the way around. nice and green stems. when you bring them home, store them in the refrigerator right away. shelf life is not that long because there's so much sugar in these grapes. the shelf life is short. so buy them and enjoy them within 4 days at the most. strawberry grapes. in the market. i have been eating these, talking about them before. oh, the flavor is out of this world.
