[ bleep ] and a woman leads police on a high-speed chase in a police car, but it's how she managed to escape that is shocking. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, hurricane irma is moving like a buzz saw through the care bayne bean and will probable hit florida some time this weekend. it left most of the island without power. at least eight deaths on the island of saint martin are blamed own the storm. irma, a category 5 storm is moving west-northwest and just passed puerto rico. it's expected to hit the bahamas by tomorrow night. in southeast florida people are scrambling for supplies, gas, and a way to get out. a mandatory evacuation for

miami/dade county including miami beach takes effect this morning, and meg oliver is in miami beach. meg, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, that's right. mandatory evacuations took place at noon. we're stand at one of the remaining lifeguard towers left. crews will remove the remaining ones left behind in a matter of hours. hurricane irma skirted by puerto rico. the island dodged much of the storm but it still left the island in the dark. officials say nearly a million people don't have power. around 50,000 don't have water. on st. thomas in the u.s. virgin islands, neighborhoods are under water. this car sits on top of a utility pole and lush trees now litter the streets. barbuda one of the first caribbean islands where irma

damaged by the storm. the storm which has sustained winds of 185 miles an hour is heading to the blams ahamas on way toward florida. here in miami mandatory evacuations are under way for high-risk areas along the coast. for evan else, it is strongly suggest they'd get out of irma's way as soon as possible. >> it's life-threatening. this is not a storm you can sit and wait through. >> reporter: res don'ts though heeding the advice are sitting in long lines waiting at gas stations oftentimes to find pumps have run dry. >> i passed two pumps and they're dry. >> reporter: for those looking to evacuate by air, american airlines says it will wind down operations on friday afternoon in soern florida before

completely canceling flights throughout the weekend. the big fear is that the eye of the storm will barrel right through miami. most of the residents i talked to are boarding up, heading out, and not taking any chances. anne-marie? >> meg oliver in miami beach. thank you so much, meg. paul deanno of our san francisco station kpix is tracking irma. >> it will pass very close to the dominican republic and also haiti over the next 24 hours. the next place to likely receive a direct impact will be the turks and caicos and then the southeast bahamas. there are three hurricanes right now. katia in the bay of campeche, jose, and hurricane irma. there is irma. even though it's moving into somewhat cooler water it's maintained its intensity as a category 5 hurricane with winds at 185 miles an hour, isolated wind gusts around the center of the storm at 225 miles an hour.

the question is what will happen between where irma is now and when it makes its closest pass or over the state of florida. it will rumble through the bahamas over the next 48 hours. then it's going to make what i'm calling the turn. it's almost a 90-degree turn to the north sometime on saturday. forecast question that about 10 million floridians are wondering is will irma turn into florida or will it turn before it makes it to florida and into the blams. the forecast model -- there are several models by each of those lines -- that turn may very well turn before hitting florida. that is not a guarantee, but that is a trend that would be better news for the state of florida. the national hurricane weather center runs hundreds of simulations several times a year. they call for hurricane-force

winds and now to a 16% chance to the key west. bahamas will take a direct hit. irma is expected to make that turn on saturday and where that turn happens will determine the specific impacts for the state of florida and those impacts could begin as early as saturday night or sunday morning. i'm meteorologist paul deanno for cbs news. ahead on "cbs this morning," extensive coverage of hurricane irma with our correspondents in the caribbean and southeast florda. a deal that president trump made with congressional democratic leaders promises to speed up the passage of a $7.9 billion hurricane harvey relief bill. the agreement includes a short-term extension of government funding and an increased debt ceiling. that left many republicans angry and bewildered. seth lemon has more. good morning, seth. >> good morning. the ruling blind-sided congressional leaders. more than that, the president overruled leaders of his own party to side with opposition and that's highlighting tension

between the congression and the between the white house and congressional republicans. during the day president trump was ready to deal. republicans, they lobbied for a long-term debt ceiling and government funding expenses to go along with the harvey emergency funding. and now it's reported that at one point in the conversation the president cut off treasury secretary steve mnuchin as he was lobbying for a longer deal. in the end mr. trump agree to a deal pushed by democrats to a three-month extension to keep the government operating and to raise the nation's debt limit. senate majority mitch mcconnell, you can say he was less than pleased when asked if he was surprised that the president sided with the democrats. >> the president can speak for himself, but his feeling was that we needed to come together, to not create a picture of divisiveness at a time of genuine national crisis, and that was the rationale. >> the president listened to the arguments. we think we made a very

reasonable and strong argument, and to his credit, he went with the better argument. >> reporter: now the president says he thinks deal will, quote, be very good. anne-marie, this gives congress until december 15th on a long-term deal to keep the government funded. yesterday the house overwhelmingly approved an emergency relief bill for harvey, but that was without the stopgap funding measures. >> seth lemon in washington. thank you, seth. the defense department says it looks forward to defending the president in the protection of young immigrants. 15 states and the district of columbia sued. california is filing a separate suit. supporters of program demonstrated against the decision. the lawsuit alleges the decision to end daca was motivated by

prejudice against immigrants. facebook has turned over to robert mueller information ads it believes was bought by a russian-based organization. facebook says 470 accounts appear to have come from a st. petersburg organization known for promoting positions via fake facebook accounts. 3,000 ads were purchased between june 2015 and may of 2017. they didn't specifically reference the candidate of a candidate or voting but talked about issues like gun control and race relations. today donald trump jr. is expected to appear before the senate judiciary committee to answer questions about his meeting with a russian lawyer. today's appearance is private. e-mails show trump junior received damaging information about hillary clinton at last year's meeting at trump tower. this morning russian president vladimir putin says he believes the north korean crisis can be resolved by diplomatic means. putin is attending a diplomatic

finally she spins out, the cop car hits the tree, and police with guns drawn arrest her. seattle seahawks michael bennett is accusing police of racial profiling and a blast in a post office in indiana. those are some of this morning's headlines. the "times" reports the fbi is investigating an explosion inside a u.s. post office in east chicago, indiana. one postal worker was injured in the blast. the extent of the injuries was not known. authorities say two pipe bombs have been found. the las vegas "review-journal" reports that seattle seahawks' michael bennett is accusing police of misconduct. bennett said he was headed to his hotel last month when he said what sounded like gunshots went off. he said he ran off when police singled him out, chased him

down, points a gun at him. he said they used excessive force and racial profiling. police say there's no evidence race played a role. the "los angeles times" reports on leslie van houten accused of murder. it's the second time she's been granted parole. governor jerry brown will decide if she can be released from prison. he rejected her parole last year. the atlantic "journal-constitution" says a tiger killed prowling around a suburban atlanta neighborhood was a 6-year-old star from a circus named suzi. police shot and killed a tiger after it jumped a fence and went after a dog in a backyard. the dog is okay. and "bloomberg" reports on a united airlines matter fined over a man who was dragged off a plane. the video of david dao was reviewed millions of times.
