anne reports it's prompting road closures. >>reporter: the fire is burning in a remote canyon in the hills behind me, but kings mountain road is closed except for to locals making it in and out on this side of the fire. the fire has been burning for several hours in the -- in the western mateo hills. it has burned 38 acres, and it ignited overnight when the thunderstorms moved through. this is one of several fires burning right now in san mateo, and santa cruz county. it is believed to be started by lightning. cal fire and local firefighters obviously have their work cut out for them. pg&e standing by in case they need to cut or restore power to any of the homes in this area.

near mack vick, kpix 5. >> the lightning strikes went through that mountain range. there's no wonder that fire is smoldering. we want to take you to 5:00 yesterday to show you the extents of those lightning strikes that came through there. there were hundreds of them between 5:00 and 10:00 last night. here are the conditions right now where that fire is burning. it's called the stead fire. temperatures right now near wood side, 81 degrees. northeast winds just at 4 miles-per-hour owe not -- but not too dry. gust up to 30 mile-per-hour. we're expecting to see the winds pick up later on today. i want to show you what the weather service is saying about those lightning strikes. 1200 confirmed cloud to ground strikes. you saw the flashes in the sky. there was a total of 7,000. we have a 30% chance of rain and thunderstorms again today. here's a wider view of our area.

you can see most of that activity is to the north of us. we're getting the high clouds right now, but there's another ban moving through. i'll track that for you in a bet. kenny. >> that lightning storm gave the bay area quite a storm. katie joins us. >>reporter: it got everyone's attention last night with more than 1,000 lightning strikes and 7,000 flashes. no one was hurt and there were no major hour damage last night. the storms still managed to cause problems around the bay. >> the boom of the [indiscernible] had to wait as mother nature's light show took over at&t park. >> it was pretty intense. >> the evening storms stretched across the bay area from santa cruz to union city and even dazzled drivers on san francisco's bay bridge as well as across the city.

this shows a massive crackle of lightning over the northern part of the city. on the peninsula, the storms strong winds knocked down power lines in san bruno and san mateo. the lightning strikes sparked small fires like this one in sanole and on mission peak in fremont. the energy from a direct lightning strike smashed part of a brick chimney. the thunderstorms seemed to blowout as fast as they rolled in, allowing the sunset to peek through the clouds. for the giant fans wondering about last night's game, it wrapped up at 2:00 a.m. with dodgers -- >> thank you. new at noon, a big unveiling for apple today including a brand new high end phone that's dubbed the future of smartphones. we're live with the insider tech info, sandra. >>reporter: hey there, kenny.

comes one day after california's attorney general announced he's filing a lawsuit over the white house's decision to end the daca program. 24,000 -- supervisors are considering a plan to create more oversight at the santa clara jail. this will create -- a director that reports the board of supervisors and a citizen's watch dog panel. the proposal comes after violent incidents in santa clara. a jury found three former guards guilty of second-degree murder in the beating death of an mentally ill inmate. residents are returning home after irma ripped through the state. irma is blamed for 11 deaths in the united states. 15 -- 5 million residents without power and expected to be restored september 22nd. fema estimated 25% homes in the florida keys were destroyed. 9

states were impacted by the storm. reporter mola lange has a look at the damage. >>reporter: a man walked through a flood the street in the riverside section of jacksonville, florida. irma caused jacksonville's worst flooding in more than 150 years. the storm surge led to more than 300 rescues monday. >> if this wasn't my job, i would have left this city days ago. >> officials says it could take days before the water is -- vince corn is cleaning up after water reached his front porch. >> we have ten inches from going inside the house. you can see water in the air ducts. >> waters reached nearly 4 feet in this jacksonville neighborhood, but as you can see, they're receding and less than a foot. irma caused massive flooding in charleston, south carolina monday. the storm knocked out power to more than 7 million customers in several states. in florida, about 2/3 of the state began the

day with no electricity. in the florida keys, officials are seeing the scope of the damage where irma barrelled in as a category 4 hurricane. >> we're still having -- getting the waters back up and the power back up. >> in the lower keys, homes are reduced to piles of debris, but evacuated residents who live in the upper keys were allowed to return home this morning. mola lange, cbs news, jacksonville, florida. >> as for flights to miami and fort lauderdale, they're resuming today, thank you will be several more days before schedules are back to normal. thousands of flights are cancelled because of irma. cruise ships are expected to return to -- in washington, president trump is working with congress on tax reform. he's expected to have dinner with senators to talk about his plan. the president also sent his treasury secretary to meet with the senate budget committee.

reopened on monday. students returned to luis g.lobet elementary school in texas. and that's where -- >> all of this was once upon a time my house. >> and hurt in harvey, nearly destroyed her home. >> washer and driver were here. >> going back to school, she says will be a welcome relief for her and her students. >> i just really think we're going to cope together. they're going to want to do something different than clear out their house or be stuck at home because their parents are cleaning out the house. they're going to want to do something. >> the tireless efforts of school employees made it possible to reopen houston area schools two weeks after hurricane harvey hit. >> but most agree, it's the students who are bringing these communities back to normal. >> how resilient are these kids? >> i would be honest. i was surprised at how well they handled this.

per hour, but that has moved up north and a little bit to the south on highway 12. it looks like green on the screen. not significant yet, but we are waiting for more. here's a wider view to give you an idea of the high clouds we're seeing today. we're expecting to get more rain from this low pressure that's been off our coast bringing those outer bans and high clouds. here's a look at the winds. they're going to pick up this afternoon. it -- here's a beautiful look at the golden gate bridge. the puffy clouds are gorgeous. oakland, 75. livermore 85. santa fe, 86 degrees. looks to be like our temperatures are going to rise a little more. here's a look at our wind speeds. they were calm through the morning. in the east winds at 5. picking up a little bit in downtown san francisco. 8 miles-per-hour wind and concord 8. fairfield 16. these wind gusts, watching them closely because around 5:00, 6:00, they'll pick up.

sustained winds between 12 to 15 miles-per-hour, but the gust will get up to 30 mile-per-hour. we saw that fire at the beginning of the show. that's not good for those firefighters. if they can't get a handle on it soon -- here's a look at the wider view off the coast. its round of showers. here's the future cast. the clouds will start to thicken up later on this afternoon. then midnight, 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m., that's when we'll see the beginning of these cells coming through. we could hear the loud roar of thunder again. we could see rain in the spots of colorado. the darker greens and yellows so we're expecting to see that overnight tonight into tomorrow morning and tomorrow a chance of the rain -- here's a look at those high temperatures for today. 87 for you in concord. 78 oakland. santa roes sa, 83 degrees. sunday's forecast looks like that, we'll keep the chance of thunderstorm in the forecast through tomorrow

the tip of the day is red kale. i love kale in different salads and i love to cook with it. kale is a super fruit. it leaves great forest. [indiscernible] other kales, it's pleasant to the eyes. when you buy red kale, make sure -- it has a dark purple color around. it's important and it has to feel nice and fresh. when you bring them home, open up that plastic buy and -- never wash it before you store it, but wash it before you enjoy it. red kale like i said, a super food. if you don't want to cook with it, you chop it up in small pieces without the stems and add lemon juice, salt and pepper and olive oil and [indiscernible], but you want it to have the acidity and let it soak. it's a great salad and protein. eat fresh and stay healthy.
