rocked mexico city. kpix5's allen martin is monitoring these developments in the newsroom. >> usgs is saying that this quake was a 7.1 and it hit at 11:15 our time centered in the mexican town of pueblo 76 miles southeast of mexico city. we'll go live to a streaming feed, we have been watching these live pictures for quite a while. a lot of people in mexico city are out on the streets here presumably to escape buildings. as you see the one on the right it has collapsed. several buildings swaying or ve collapsed. there are 21 million people in greater mexico city. if you compare that to the greater bay area we have 7 million people here. so three times the number. this spot is particularly prone to earthquake damage. the city is actually built on an

old lake bed. ties. now we don't know about but look at the number of people in the street thealresu on the bottom left hand side. also todays quake 32 years to the day when a magnitude eight earthquake hit mexico city. that quake killed at least 5,000 people. again that was back in 1985. because of the anniversary people in mexico city actually held their earthquake drills earlier today right before this 7.1 quake struck. after the eight earthquake they built a rather effective warning system. they have sirens that go off before the ground actually starts to shake. but at this time we don't know how much warning people in mexico city actually had before the 7.1 quake hit. again don't know if there are any casualties from todays quake. but certainly there are going to be numerous injuries at the very least. we have been watching these live pictures come in from the mexico

city newspaper called excelsior showing people digging through several of the collapsed buildings. it looked like at at least one building there had pancaked but many more probably. we're going to watch these pictures and continue to monitor the information coming in from mexico city. about 11:15 our time, the quake was a 7.1. we'll monitor developments and get to the latest information, guys back to you. >> thank you for that. back to our top local story now. an off duty chp officer killed in a crash happened just before 6:00 this morning. here's the story from sandra osborne. >> a friend of the man stopped by to say he was a great man and officer. he was likely on his way to work this morning when the crash happened on the road right behind me. >> he was a good officer. someone you wanted by your side. >> the crash before 6:00 this morning took place right in front of this gas station at the

corner of montereyhighway. chp has not confirmed the man's identity. a pickup truck for an unknown reason turned in front of a motorcycle driving on the highway. the man on the motorcycle died at the scene. >> a gas station clerk here saying he heard the crash, he heard the loud boom and came outside to see what was going on. chp is wrapping up their investigation here at the scene. we'll get you more detail as they come in. >> president trump addressed world leaders a the the united nations for the first time this morning. he made a declaration of american values and targeted specific threats. >> the world was watching as president trump made his first address to the united nations general assembly. >> welcome to new york. >> he delivered tough talk on north korea urging world leaders to isolate kim jong-un and his

now maria is now a category 5 hurricane carrying winds that could reach 155 miles per hour. itriinngst bdestg ruction one pd on the island of gaudalupe. >> the hurricane made landfall overnight as a category 5 with sustained winds at 165 miles per hour now. it's actually intensifying. it is expected to downgrade a little bit as it heads towards puerto rico. but you can see how it went through those islands now here the virgin islands is next in line. currently a category 5. here's puerto rico. could impact puerto rico later tonight and tomorrow morning as a category 4. but of course still destructive and frightening for those people currently trying to get out of there if they can and also trying to board up their walls. but they're going through it again. after irma came through now

maria. it's moving north-northwest at 10 miles per hour. it's expected to continue on through the bahamas possibly effecting bermuda. it's also making a direct line right through puerto rico just north of the dominican republican. so it will certainly cause an impact for them too in the form of storm surges and rain and a lot of wind. >> our reporter continues team coverage from san juan, puerto rico where people are bracing for hurricane maria in the next 24 hours. >> asthma rip yeah made landfall you could see the powerful impacts on the island of gaudalupe. heavy rains and wind gusts of of over 150 miles per hour pounded several small countries recently devastated by hurricane irma. earlier we traveled by helicopter to st. thomas. from the air the scope of what irma did here is apparent. debris still litters the island

and could turn into dangerous projectiles when maria's hurricane force winds move in. this woman and her 2-year-old son stuck around during irma but now she's getting out, going to new jersey to meet her sister. she plans to come right back to rebuild what's left of the island of st. john. >> why didn't you want to get out? >> it's our home. it's where we live and we need to be there to help people. >> schools are now shelters on st. thoma for thoses unable or unwilling to evacuate. all critically ill patients are being air lifted out and people staying behind are being warden. >> expect no ems, fire, or police response from the locals because we believe the road has been washed out. if it washes out there's nothing we can do. >> people are emptying out hardware and grocery stores and waiting in long lines to fill up

gas tank. >> this could end up being the storm of the century saying there could be catastrophic damage to the island infrastructure. >> firefighters from stations around the bay area are helping cover for san francisco firefighters as they remember one of their own. >> reporter: a san francisco fire engine led the way for the hearse this morning. the sidewalk lined with fellow firefighters, black bands over their badges honoring the battalion chief who died suddenly on september 10th. >> he's a valued member of our department for over 26 years. he'll be sorely missed. >> coworkers found him unresponsive in his station office after returning from a building alarm call. all arounds etwererest blocked off today ans huge american flag greeted the

huge turnout of firefighters who came to pay their respects. as his fellow firefighters honored the battalion chief's life today. firefiters from all around the bay area attended a briefing before dawn. >> you might see a different engine coming to your call. >> giving every san francisco firefighter the chance to come here today to honor one of their own. >> berkeley police have asked the community to be on the look out for a man link today several bizarre run in's with children. 36-year-old william turner is said to have tried to feed an unknown liquid to at least three kids. the youngest being a 1-year-old. it happened back in june at a rth of aypl university. police arrested turner a few weeks back, but now he's no longer in custody. >> he pled guilty to disorderly

conduct, he's been released. but yet we still see him in and around schools and playgrounds in our city. it's why we shared his picture and are coming forward in the interest of public safety. >> they put up signage around town to make it clear that adults with children are not allowed. >> still ahead shaking up silicon valley with a gender discrimination lawsuit and now a new book. how she says her actions helped others come forward. >> it may look beautiful at the beach today with all of these clear skies. but the reason you should avoid the water coming up.

mexico city... kpix 5's allen martin is monitoring developments in the newsroom. allen: u-s-g-s says the quake was a 7 breaking news, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake near mexico city. allen martin is monitoring the developments in the newsroom. >> usgs says the qua 7.1 hit at 11:15 our time centered in the mexican state of pube pu -- of puebla. this is the live stream we been watching from the news paper excelsior. we have seen numerous buildings collapse and pancake in the damage. also a population of 21 million people, many people getting out of those buildings and getting into the street. and now they're trying to get into those collapse buildings to

get back in there to rescue people who i'm sure are trapped. they have to reports of any casualties yet. but we know there have to be numerous, numerous injuries at least. we've had reports of near the mexico city airport the roads actually splitting open. huge tremors created by this quake. and again this is on the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake it was 8.0. we know that killed at least 5,000 people. but again a live stream from the newspaper excelsior as we're watching people out in the street obviously very, very emotional. huge damage . what we expect to be huge injuries and loss of life. we'll continue to monitor the 7.1 earthquake and get back to you with the very latest. >> allen martin with the very latest in the newsroom, thank

you. new at noon a san francisco sheriffs deputy has been let go after his loaded gun was taken from a parked car. the sheriff says the gun was not secured. the deputy was a probationary employee and had been working for less than a year. >> ellen powell made headlines for her discrimination lawsuit against her former employer in silicon valley. now she's sharing her story in a new memoir it's called reset my fight for inclusion and change. she helped spark a national discussion about gender inequality and diversity in the world of tech. powell explained what she thinks the suit accomplished. >>anavkeozupen. anspeople just don't think that women and people of color perform at the same level regardless of all of their experience and education. >> last year powell created the nonprofit project include which she says is aimed at giving

you can see the golden gate, the bay bridge, anywhere you turn pretty much is clear out there. temperatures feeling pretty good. 70 ins concord and oakland. 69 livermore. 67 san francisco. san jose 70. and santa rosa 75. northwest winds coming down right now hayward 11. it was really strong earlier today. 11 miles per hour sustained winds for san francisco. and san rafael at 12. so winds could be as high as 20 miles per hour today because of this storm system all associated with what's going on to the north. you can see the rain bands here coming through. even brought some snow down from the cascade mountains this morning. as far as our chances of rain go you can see it here. pretty much today we'll have a continued clear sky. by tonight the clouds could come on through. maybe some drizzle here and there some spotty showers, nothing significant. not much measurable rain expected. until about noon, perhaps morgan

hill or san jose you could get a chance of those rain showers. it's beautiful to go out for a walk but the water very dangerous. the swell 6 to 10 feet every 12 to 16 seconds. rip currents also a danger of course, if you're taking your dog out and they like to run out into the ocean try to keep them on a leash the next couple of days. your high today 74, 73 vallejo. san francisco only a couple of degrees warmer than what we have right now. sunset tonight 7:ten. here's a look at the 7-day forecast, you can see this continued downward slope of temperatures. we'll continue to get colder and colder especially the morning hours. low 40s for some areas by thursday, friday in the mornings. and then saturday, sunday into monday things warming up. 90s possible for inland neighborhoods. stay with us, we'll be right back.
