three people trapped inside. jackie ward reports. >> reporter: neighbors tell us this isn't the first time that there's been a fire here. this is the third one in this building in a year. san francisco firefighters arrived to the apartment complex minutes after they received the call. it went to two alarms because flames engulfed the unit. this is one of five people who live in 7h. >> the girl who lives there, in the part of the living room, and i saw smoke coming into my bedroom. there was smoke everywhere. >> reporter: he says only three people were home when the fire started just after 5:30 this morning. sf fire tells us two of those people are being treated for injuries from the flames and smoke. one is in serious condition. the other in moderate. they are not believed to be san francisco state students. >> just matter of minutes when we came down it was like very

big fire coming out the window. so everyone is okay with it. >> reporter: he said a few months ago a fire happened right across the hall from his place. >> just 3, 4 months ago. they just got done repainting the floor. >> reporter: a "shelter in place" was lifted just after 7:20 a.m. residents say the fire alarms were working. fire investigators are remain on scene as they try to determine a cause. >> a spokesman for the complex had no comment. as jackie said the building caught fire in december of last year. a twitter user driving nearby shot this video of flames from a window. no one was hurt in that fire. chopper 5 spotted a plume of gray smoke above east oakland this morning.

a truck was in flames. a neighbor moved his car parked nearby. minutes later oakland firefighters were on the scene. no one was hurt. a challenge for crews at the port of oakland right now. they are trying to recover nearly a dozen cargo containers that fell into the water. kpix 5's neda iranpour shows us how dive teams are trying to get them out. >> reporter: this carrier here with the letters mol on it came to the port of oakland from japan carrying dozens of containers. 11 fell off and 10 need to be salvaged from the water. a massive mighty cargo ship causes quite the mishap. one container seen on its side pulled out of the water in time. it's now on the dock. 10 others fell and sank to the floor of the san francisco bay. divers contracted by the port of oakland to do the searching. after two hours, three were spotted near the bow in the dock. once they are all found and marked with a buoy, a crane

will start pulling them out. >> fortunately, these are empty boxes so the weight is not as great as it could have been. >> reporter: the port of oakland says they are 20 to 40 feet long some about 5,000 pounds empty. they were going back to asia for filling. >> if you don't have empty containers in asia you can't export to this country, the shoes and computers. >> reporter: in fact, 2.5 million containers come through the port of oakland every year. and in the 11 years mike has been with the port, this is only the second time containers have gone overboard. the last time only involved one or two. 11 is a significant number. no injuries, no water contamination, and port traffic continues. port officials say the goal is to get them out of the water by late tonight. in oakland, neda iranpour, kpix 5. a well-known grocery store owner was killed in a hit-and- run crash in san francisco this morning. it happened around 2:15 a.m.

near the intersection of jerrold avenue and toland in the bayview. the 57-year-old victim has been identified as [ indiscernible ] he owns haight street mark and noriega produce. the driver fled. they are looking for a silver sedan. name calling and personal attacks between president trump and kim jong-un. now kim jong-un says he will tame the president. mola lenghi has the white house response. >> reporter: north korean dictator kim jong-un is lashing out against president trump for his speech to the u.n. general assembly this week. in a personal statement, kim slammed what he called the mentally deranged behavior u.s. president and he said he would make mr. trump pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying the dprk. president trump responded or twitter saying:

[ non-english language ] >> chairman of the commission has this decision to conduct strongest ever hydrogen bomb test in the pacific ocean. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson was asked on "good morning america" how the u.s. would respond if that happened. >> we will continue our efforts in the diplomatic arena but all our militaries options as the president has said are on the table. once we can assess the nature of this threat, the president will make a decision regarding the appropriate actions. >> reporter: thursday, president trump issued a new executive order that gives the world an ultimatum. you can do business with north korea or you can do business with the united states. but not both. >> this is unacceptable that others financially support this criminal rogue regime. >> reporter: the order cuts off access to u.s. banks and freezes the assets of those dealing with north korean textiles, fishing and manufacturing industries. mola lenghi, cbs news, the

white house. new at noon the latest effort to repeal and replace will not pass in the senate. about an hour ago arizona senator john mccain announced his opposition to a republican healthcare bill. in a statement, he said that he could not, quote, in good conscience vote for the graham- cassidy bill. meanwhile, vermont senator bernie sanders is expected to highlight his own medicare for all plan in san francisco today. he is scheduled to speak at 1:00 at yerba buena gardens organized by the california nurses association. a couple of hours later he will go to city college to celebrate free college. the death toll continues to rise in central mexico as rescuers search for survivors of the earthquake. at least 286 people are dead. manuel bojorquez says crews are making dramatic rescues from the rubble. [ ah! >> reporter: the cries of this person rang out and rescuers tried to bring her to safety. >> whoo!

[ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: so far first responders in mexico city have pulled 60 survivors from the rubble. they are also using dogs. [ barking ] >> reporter: they are searching for missing people in the debris. [ speaking spanish ] >> he worked here 4 months only. >> reporter: this woman is looking for her 26-year-old son one of more than 40 people still listed as missing on this collapsed office building. they have been sleeping on the street as think wait for news. >> you have to have faith. >> no. >> i can't lose faith, she said, until they tell us the search is over. i'll keep coming back. >> reporter: at this school rescuers dug for what they thought was a little girl under the debris but the government said it was an adult and no students were believed to be there.

engineering professor [ non- english language ] said the earthquake could have been much worse. but he pointed to updated building codes and a seismic warning system created after the 1985 quake that killed thousands as reasons the city is still standing. >> i think one thing that is important for our friends in the united states is to see that mexico city 24 hours of earthquake was functioning. this is a very resilient people. >> reporter: it's also a city that's tried to prepare. tuesday's earthquake struck on the exact anniversary of the 1985 quake and after drills had been conducted throughout the city. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, mexico city. >> by order from the white house, the u.s. navy is sending medical, water sanitation and hygiene supplies to mexico to help the victims. personnel at this naval center in san diego helped coordinate a delivery of 50,000 pounds earlier this week. hurricane maria is a cat-3

going to the turks & caicos islands. earlier this week it hit puerto rico killing 13 people. the governor says that the island is facing a humanitarian emergency now. most of puerto rico is without power. families gathered outside taking turns cooking their food and using a lamp light. inside, the heat and humidity have become unbearable. but some families are trying to stay positive. >> why is it that i have not seen anyone around here complain about their situation? >> because we are a small town. we are a very humble people and we are grateful for the chance to live. >> forecasters expect hurricane maria will gradually weaken over the next two days and stay out in the atlantic. still ahead, apple releases its latest iphone. why there didn't seem to be as much fanfare as usual. >> plus, uber losing its license in london. why the city says it's no longer fit to operate there. >> from the kpix weather center, we are less than an

at the palo alto apple store: it looked day. apple's new iphone 8 hits stores today but the typical fanfare did not. at the palo alto apple store, it looked like just a normal business day. there were no long lines before the store opened. still, apple lovers say they are eager to check out the iphone 8's new features. >> the feature with the camera

points. just a few months after its grand opening, bart officials are closing the warm springs south fremont station for the next couple weekends. the closure is being done so bart can get ready for the opening of the silicon valley extension. a free bus bridge will run tomorrow and sunday as well as next weekend. riders should prepare for a 20- to 30-minute delay. bart is advising commuters to park at the fremont station. all right. we are ready for the weekend! autumn arrives. we it we have a bird. no clouds for the next seven to 10 days with a classic offshore flow. santa rosa was 41 degrees this morning. that's typical for the month of march in santa rosa. 65 in livermore. good afternoon to jim in napa. he says he bottomed out at 41 this morning, too. it's now 71 degrees there. winds have been flattening out. now at 12 and sfo not nearly as blustery as it has been the past couple of days. we will see the west-southwest winds 10 to 20 miles per hour and the coast has been clearing out. just a little bit of light stratus. warmer weather over the weekend weekend. humidity plummets over the next few days and we'll see high fire danger beginning sunday night through next thursday. again, low pressure out of here after dumping three to six inches of snow in the high sierra. there you have that big dome of

questions and have our pet expert weigh in. our first question comes from "donna." she says her 5- year-old indoor cat harley loves to eat cat-grass which she grows for he occasi every friday we take your questions and have our pet expert weigh in. donna says her 5-year-old indoor cat harley loves to eat cat grass which she grows for him often. he occasionally vomits after eating it. she wants to know if it's good for his digestion. dr. jill chase joins us along with akina. >> what's the answer to that? >> the answer is that it's completely fine for cats to eat grass and, um, they actually enjoy eating grass but the owner is correct then they vomit. so you have to balance that desire for them to eat with having the vomit potentially in

your house. i don't like that. [ laughter ] >> akina i just want to say is a burmese. i always tell people, it's great to have a burmese cat once in your life. they're cool cats but she is very nervous about being here. >> beautiful. >> super sweet. >> next question is from christine from contra costa county. she writes: been caught, fixed and had her first set of shots, then let go back in the neighborhood she was caught in. do they do this everywhere or just in my community? wild/feral cats who have been neutered at the shelter may have eir ear notched surgically so they can easily be identified as already having been neutered. they also may have been tattooed on their abdomen -- if adopted and a vet were to do surgery not knowing they were al shave th >> i can't answer every shelter situation. but it is true that a lot of the shelters that we bring in feral wildcats to and have them spayed or actually neutered if they're males will have the ears notch and that makes it easy for to us identify immediately that they have had that procedure done. and then with female cats sometimes they will also have a tattoo on their abdomen because if they should ever get adopted
