movement against police brutality. players at every single pro football game protested in some way during the national anthem. players sat, they kneeled, teammates locked arms. in pittsburgh the entire team except for one former army ranger decided to stay off the field during the "national anthem." villanueva, a west point graduate who served three tours in afghanistan stood outside the tunnel with his hand on his heart. >> they chose not to participate in the "national anthem." many of them were not going to accept the words of the president. >> those words started friday and cntinued throughout the weekend. president trump said they should fire the s.o.b.s who would not stand for the "national anthem." >> this has nothing to do with the state or our country.

maxwell put his hand over his heart. teammates stood in line next to him. and president trump is replacing his expiring travel ban with new restrictions starting next month. the new rules include chad, and others. the restrictions range from an indefinite ban on visas to more targeted restrictions. it was announced after a ban on six muslim majority nations was sell to expire. several republicans updated their latest last-ditch effort to repeal the affordable health caring at. two, john mccain and rand paul, say they oppose the bill. several others say they don't think they'll support the measure. it adds $14 billion for states. republicans have until september

was arrested. he remains in police custody without bail. no motive was immediately determined. the death toll from that powerful earthquake in mexico now stands at 320, including over 18 180 in mexico city. the region was rocked by a powerful 6.1 magnitude aftershock saturday. rescue operations continue, but many searches have been shut down. the last time anyone was found alive was wednesday. heavy equipment has been shifted to begin moving debris, and thousands are homeless. this morning hurricane maria is weakening well off the coast of southeast united states. it's at 185 miles an hour and is octedex tweak remains alarm storm with tropical-force winds 230 miles from its center. this morning a mandatory

evacuation has been ordered for oak a coke island just off north carolina. one says the storm set the island back decades. the damage to infrastructure and communications is extensive and at least ten people were killed on the island. david begnaud reports from san juan. >> reporter: from the air we were able to get new video from some of the hard-hit areas. homes in san juan are still surrounded by water. the damage is catastrophic here. in catano, the flooding is as widespread today as it was four days ago when we found chest-deep water. by tractor wmade it to guajataca. where officials say this 90-year-old dam is close to breaching.

where you see the fresh dirt, that's where the failure of the spillway happened. the concern now is if there's a vulnerability there, it may extend up on road and the entire dam could fail. there are long lines of people waiting to buy fuel. officials say more than 80% of the island's cell phone towers have been damaged. in the hard-hit reege of toe roy ha ba, we found hundreds of people standing below a cell phone tower trying to get a signal. ellie rivera was trying to reach family in chicago and boston. >> i want to talk to my family. i'm okay. but my mother is in the hospital. >> reporter: for those who could get one bar, it was just enoughe e told some c om people need to be rescued today, some five days after the storm made landfall, but they have no way of calling for help.

today marks the 60th anniversary of a watershed moment in the civil rights movement. in 1957 the u.s. army escorted nine african-american students known as the little rock nine past an angry white mob into what was an all-white high school. anniversary events took place the last few days including an unveiling of a sculpture at the school on friday. some big names come together and jared kushner is accused in an e-mail controversy. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. kushner's lawyer says between january and august kushner received or responded to fewer than 100 e-mails from white house colleagues on his private account.

first lady melania trump joined britain's prince harry at the opening ceremonies of the invictus games in toronto on saturday. wounded service veterans compete in the games, and prince harry's girlfriend was there. it was her first appearance at a public event with him. many athletes are doing exercise in water that cuts down the wear and tear on their body. danielle noti intingham has the story. >> reporter: former baseball player max gilbert suffers aches and pains when working out. so he's doing a different kind of impact training using a treadmill that's under water that you're basically using all of your extremities. you're fighting against the treadmill to see what you can get out of your body.

our top stories this morning, president trump's profane criticism of nfl players who kneel during the "national anthem" spur a leaguewide protest yesterday. about 200 players sat, knelt, or raised their fists. most locked arms with their teammates with some coaches and owners joining in. the president says the opposition has nothing to do with race. the trump administration announced a new travel ban. travelers from eight countries will face restrictions coming into the u.s. some face full bans. for others like venezuela there are more tailored restrictions. the new rules go into effect next month. and senate republicans

real nazis by opponents followed merkel wherever she went, blowing whistles and booing her. they argued merkel broke the law by admitting over 1 million refugees into the country. their controversial campaign posters included a pregnant woman with the words "new germans, we'll make our own." in the end this polarizing campaign gained around 13% o the group makining for the first fa right group to earn parliamentary seats since 1957. ultimately merkel's message resonated, but these extreme voices will now be seated next to her for four years. in her victory speech merkel acknowledged the far right and their supporters saying her goal is to now understand their concerns and regain their trust. meanwhile a spokesperson with alternative for germany vowed to hunt down merkel and take back
