out. >> along the dusty roads between the san diego tijuana border, contractors are racing to build their versions of what trump's border wall will look like. the winner potentially take home two federal contracts, totaling $600 million. the prototypes will be between 1 and 30 feet high and stretching 30 feet long. contractors will have a month to build them. each version could cost up to $500,000. less than a few miles away from the construction site, we saw a man trying to outrun border patrol agents after illegally jumping the fence. juan gomez says he crossed illegally from mexico to find a better future for his family in the united states. carlos diaz is with the department of homeland security. >> our objective is to give the border patrol here, securing the borders the best tools available for them to be able to secure the iserbogood.nough anymore. >> well, we are always looking

>> the hall of fame head coach left campus this morning, somber and silent. >> coach, did they fire you? >> reporter: few hours later, university of louisville interim president, revealed why. >> effective immediately, coach pitino placed on unpaid administrative leave. >> disciplinary action one day after federal prosecutors detailed a corruption scandal involving paying bribes to direct players to certain schools and to financial advisers and agents. pitino not accused of any wrongdoing. cbs news learned he is mentioned in the indictment as coach 2. prosecutors allege an assistant coach at louisville was part of a scheme to pay at least $100,000 to the families of two recruits, if they signed with the university. in a statement, pitino's lawyer said the information disclosed thus far is clearly insufficient to implicate coach pitino in misconduct.

this is the cbs "overnight news." >> welcome to the "overnight news," i'm michelle miller. after eight months with no major legislative victories, president trump unveiled his plan to overhaul the u.s. tax code. and he wants congress to pass it by the end of the year. the president's proposal would cut personal and corporate tax rates, and allow companies to repatriot profits they have been stark overseas. mr. trump insists the new tax code will be a boom to the middle-class and insists there will be very little benefit for the wealthy. nancy cordes has more from capitol hill. >> there has never been tax cuts like what we are talking about. >> president trump traveled to indiana to tout what he called a once in a generation

opportunity. >> i guess it is probably something i could say that i am very good at. i have been waiting for this for a long time. an eight page framework. goal one. slashing corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%. for individuals, the plan would take the seven current income tax brackets with rates that range from 10% to 39.6%, and consolidate them to three brackets. 12%. 25%. and 35%. democart chuck schumer cried foul. what kind of plan is this? >> reporter: republicans argue that doubling the standard deduction and boosting the child tax credit will lower working class taxes. their plan, preserves breaks for mortgage interest and charitable giving. but eliminates most other

itemized deductions along with the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax. >> simplifying the tax code so that you can file your taxes on a form the size of a postcard. republicans made a show of unity today. even as analysts warned the plan could reduce government revenue by $2 trillion or more over ten years. >> so the question how do you pay for it. >> south carolina republican, tim scott insists the bill once written will close costly loopholes. >> isn't that the hard part? getting rid of all the goodies that people have gotten used to? >> it is a process. >> federal aid continues to trick nool puerto rico which has been paralyzed since hurricane maria roared ashore last week. nearly all island remains without electricity. and there is still little food, walter or fuel. david begnaud begins our coverage. puerto rico's governor told us there is food, water, medicine at the port waiting to be

about her health and health of her baby. every cramp is cause for concern. what was causing the pain you ju std? or power in her house, and she became dehydrated. she fell during hurricane maria and with many roads blocked, it took her two days to reach the hospital. here at central medico, the largest hospital, ambulances arrive but not everyone gets to go inside. triage tents on a driveway because of spotty power and air condition. how long have you been here? >> 20 years. >> reporter: ever seen anything this bad? >> never. >> reporter: the head of obstetrics and gynecology. >> there have been multiple home births people that would not ever, in any modern day give birth at home. people have had previous c sections, previous multiple medical conditions. >> reporter: who us delivering them? >> don't know.

ted stayed at his job. kept working. kept going. even when he was in a wheelchair. and, he never gave up because he loved the engagement. >> the senator first learned he had a problem in arizona, back in july. when doctors found a blood clot over his left eye, after a routine checkup at the mayo clinic in phoenix. he was driving backhe t t >> driving up here. and i got about, 2/3 of the way up. and my doctor called said, you have got to come back. i said, hey, today it is friday. i'll come in monday. she said, no you have to come now. it's very serious. >> you turned the car around. and went immediately into surgery. >> yes, thought it was serious enough that they had to act immediately. >> and before the blood clot operation, did they, mention glyoblastoma to you?

>> yes, but as you know doctors are interesting. >> they cover themselves. >> i kept saying to them. tell it to me straight. well, there is all way this, there is always that. and, i said, i can take it. just tell me. and -- and then they, they were, more forthcoming. >> five days after the surgery, lab results confirmed he had gleoblastoma. >> what did they tell you about the prognosis? >> it is very serious. that the prognosis is very, very serious. some say 3%. some say 14%. you know, it's, it's a very poor prognos prognosis. so, i just said, i understand. now we are going to do what we can. get the best doctors we can find. and do the best we t same time celebrate with gratitude a life well lived.

president trump calling for americans to boycott nfl games this weekend over the festering controversy over the national anthem. vladamir duthier has the story of the anthem and now it now intersects sports and politics. >> the first documented time, the star spangled banner was played at an american sporting event at brooklyn new york baseball game at the height of the civil war. while there are guidelines about how to act when the anthem is played. there are no penalty for those who choose not to follow them. when the national anthem played at this weekend's football games, many players and team owners were seen kneeling or linking arms in defiance of president trump after he told them not to protest.
