and fear and devastation in puerto rico as countless wait for food, water, and medicine. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. playboy hugh hefner died last night at his los angeles home. hefner died of natural causes. he was 91 years old. the first edition of "playboy" promised humor, sophistication, and spice. spice was obvious. hefner's magazine turned into an em pair at the forefront of the sexual revolution. hefner, as john blackstone reports, became the genre of the pajama-wearing symbol of the free-wheeling lifestyle his magazine tried to chronicle. >> reporter: he spent his life making sex sexy. >> sex is one of the best things on this planet. >> reporter: he turned provocative photos into an empire and a bunny into a billion-dollar symbol of free-wheeling sexuality.

>> i think we were there to ignite the flame that became the sexual revolution. >> reporter: and it was a woman who helped start it. >> my mother gave me the first thousand dollars that launched "playboy." >> reporter: hugh marston hefner was born in chicago in 1926. he thought he would be a cart n cartoonist, but when he was 27, he started his own magazine. he launched in 1953 with marilyn monroe wearing nothing but a come hither look and the magazine quickly became a movement. >> isn't that really what you're selling? kind of a high-classed dirty book? >>or hr ede 't think so at all. anedtu "playboy" featured articles, essays, short stories. it pushed the boundaries on sexuality and journalism. his tv show "playboy after dark" broke down barriers in the '60s. his foundation supports racial

equality, changes in drug laws, and, of course, in women. >> crazy enough, we've been on the side of the angels in most of these causes. i'm one of the good guys. >> reporter: of course, there were critics and controversy, but along the way, hugh hefner became hef, a man always comfortable in silk pajamas. he had his own jet, two mansions, life of endless parties, and relationships with beautiful women. >> we should be celebrating our sexuality. it's a blessing. >> reporter: but by the 1990s, sex was moving from magazines to computer screens. magazines dwindled. playboy clubs closed. be then in his 80s, he got things going again. >> i used to be a jitterbug when i was a kid. now i'm a twitter bug. >> i'm so excited that it's your birthday. >> it is? >> reporter: he was a boyfriend of the girls next door. young ladies living in his mansion keeping up the image. >> looking back, a life well

lived with a lot of sat fakz. >> reporter: the playboy life, changed the way women are viewed in more ways than one. john blackstone, cbs news. on to other news now, business groups and most conservatives are applauding the tax cut. democrats say the middle class is left out. the $6 trillion proposal cuts taxes for corporations and simplifies tax brackets. the details are yet to be worked out. hena doba is here in new york with more on that. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. they unveiled the biggest tax cut in 30 years, but democrats fear it favors the rich. the debate has begun over president trump's revamped tax code. the president says it's a $6 trillion tax cut that will primarily favor working-class americans.

>> tax reform will protect low income and middle income households, not the wealthy and well connected. >> the primary change for individuals, a simplified tax code that reduces the seven current income tax brackets to three. but who exactly gets taxed slightly more on the bottom and slightly less on top is a big point of contention. >> a large percentage of middle-class families would pay more taxes. looking at this plain, i think almost every wealthy family would get a break. >> doubling the standard deduction and lowering child care taxes would help. it would simplify things so much. >> democrats insist it amounts to a net loss. >> what a family of four would gain with respect to an extra $12,000 in standard deductions, they simultaneously lose more than $16,000 in personal and dependent exemptions.

>> some warn it could reduce government rev new by $2 trillion over 20 years adding to the nation's $22 trillion national debt. republicans are also touting the simplicity of the plan, saying most americans will be able to complete their entire tax filing on a single postcard. anne-marie? >> hena doba here in new york. thanks, hena. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk about the sweeping tax proposal with secretary steve mnuchin. in puerto rico now, the situation for millions of residents has become desperate. the lack of food, water, fuel, and communications is overwhelming the island. president trump is under pressure to waive the federal law removing goods from u.s. ports. the storm hit september 20th and at least 16 people on puerto rico were killed. most of the island remains without power. some much needed supplies have arrived, but as david begnaud reports, they have not been distributed. >> it's sad and it's

frustrating. >> reporter: jose ayala is president of crowley shipping services of puerto rico. is there anything else you can do to try to move it out faster? >> there's no way unless trucking companies start showing up. >> reporter: so we asked governor ricardo rossello -- >> reporter: most of the roads on puerto rico are still blocked or damaged, and most of the island remains without power. another problem, fuel shortage. gasoline has become like liquid gold, and lineups to buy fuel for generators stretch for miles. this is the third day mary beth cardenas has waited in line. >> we can't get supplies. we can't get food. there are placeshat are open that are selling food, but we just can't get to them because we don't have a gas for our

cars. >> reporter: there are other lines for essential things, too, like lines to get cash. we saw rosa in line at an atm where patience is in short supply. >> we're american citizens. we're not better than anyone. we're not worse than anyone. that's why it's so hard to understand what's taking congress so long. >> reporter: we were there in the town of salinas. fema brought food and water. and the u s ss kear saj is now floating offshore. 20 helicopters and osprey are flying to the island. royal caribbean canceled a cruise to help with the aid effort. the adventure of the seas docked yesterday. it dropped off relief supplies and plans to pick up more evacuees. the u.s. launched a missile strike in retaliation for a

rocket attack on the kabul airport. the taliban launched yesterday's attack. they say they were targeting the plane carrying secretary jim mattis, but mattis was at a meeting at the tomb of the attack. the plane was not attacked. one of the missiles it launched missed its target and killed at least one civilian. in baltimore prosecutors say dedrl30se because of four allegations of police misconduct. three allegations contain body cam video apparently showing officers planting evidence or re-enacting searches and eight officers were indicted on racketeering and fraud charges that included illegally detaining and robbing baltimore residents. rick pitino's lawyer says the louisville basketball coach has done nothing wrong and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. the university placed pitino on unpaid leave yesterday in the

she said she had a pet allergy. she was told to show a certificate. she resisted and was removed. she was charged with disorlderly conduct. southwest apologized to her. facebook is fighting anti-trump accusations, and a deadly stabbing at a high school. those are some of thehoodlines on the morning newsstand. the new york "daily news" reports a student was stabbed to death by a bully at a bronx high school. the 18-year-old suspect told him two other teenagers had been harassing him for a while. he attacked one with a switch blade during history class yesterday, killing one and wounding another. it was the first homicide in the school since 1993. the "los angeles times" says one person died and one person was hurt in a rock fall at california's yosemite national park. witnesses report seeing a rock the size of an apartment building fall off the face of el capitan.

issuing its final estimate of how the economy did from april to june. here on wall street stocks climbed on news that small business investment rose last month and hope that business investments benefit by trump's tax cuts. the dow rose 56 points, the s&p gained 10 points, and the nasdaq jumped 73 points. a survey shows american families got ritter since 2016. it jumped 16% to $97,300, but disparities widened. the median wealth of white families was $171,000, ten times that of black families and about eight times that of hispanics. uber is reportedly shutting down its car leasing subsidiary for its drivers. it was started two years ago for drivers who couldn't buy cars. uber was losing $5,000 per car according to "the wall street journal."

the woman called 911 when she couldn't get out of the suv and it started to fill up with water. russ rescuers used raft to bring her to safety. she was reportedly shaken up but otherwise okay. one more person has died as a result of hurricane harvey. more than 80 people have been killed since the storm hit on august 25th. the latest victim died from a flesh-eating bacteria. courtney zubowski has the story. >> reporter: 77-year-old nancy reed died from neck rah advertising fasciitis, commonly referred to as flesh-eating bacteria. the bacteria skin infection spreads quickly and kills soft tissue in the body. saw a big uptick in wound infections. so it's one of those infections we're on the lookout for here after harvey.

deduction used by most americans. democrats say the plan leaves out the middle class. details on how to pay for it are still being worked out. fuel and water are running low on puerto rico a week after hurricane maria hit. as dr. jon lapook reports, providing medical care is a real challenge. >> reporter: we met marcelina lop lopez, who is six months' pregnant and worries about her own health and the health of her baby. every cramp is cause for concern. >> what was causing the pain you just had. she said there was no watt err or power in her house and she became dehydrated. she fell during hurricane maria and with many roads blocked, it took her two days to reach the hospital. here at central medical, the island's largest hospital, ambulances arrive, but not everyone gets to go inside. triage tents have been set up on a driveway because of spotty power and air conditioning.
