people working together. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news head quarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the girlfriend of las vegas gunman stephen paddock arrived in the united states from the philippines early this morning. we now know that paddock transferred $100,000 to the philippines in the days before the attack. officials say paddock extensively planned the ambush, including setting um cameras in his hotel room to watch for police. one more person died from gunshot wounds, but the death toll remains at 59 after an earlier count was revised. president trump will visit las vegas today, and mola lenghi is in las vegas now. mola, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. authorities are learning more about how stephen paddock carried out the shooting massacre, but the critical question of why remains

unanswered. president trump will visit las vegas, the first time confronting a mass shooting situation as president of the united states. las vegas police have released body camera footage from sunday night's shooting. you can hear the officers warning as the shots were coming from up high from the mandalay bay hotel. >> they're shooting right at us, guys. everybody stay down, stay down. >> reporter: as president trump gets ready to meet with survivors, investigators are releasing more information on how the shooting unfolded. these are photos from inside stephen paddock's hotel room. police say he fired on and off from between nine and 11 minutes, he had bump fire stocks, legal devices that allowed a semiautomatic gun to fire continuously as an automatic. paddock also brought surveillance equipment.

>> there were two cameras located in the hallway so he could watch law enforcement or security to approach his room and also in the peephole so he could see down the hallway. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell cbs there have been more than 100 suspicious reports of paddock in the days leading up to the shooting, transfers of large amounts of cash overseas. some of it went to the philippines where his girlfriend was staying. las vegas police say paddock's girlfriend marilou danley is a person of interest. she flew back and was met by fbi agents. investigators also looking into whether paddock planned an earlier attack in las vegas before finally settling on sunday night's concert. anne-marie? >> mola lenghi in las vegas. thank you very much, mola. in the wake of sunday's shootings, some hotels have enacted enhanced security detectors. the wynn and on core hotels are

scanning luggage as the need arises. earlier the las vegas "review-journal" report thad the hotels were checking every bag but have scaled back. and at least 130 victims from the shooting remain hospitalized. 48 remain in critical condition. we're learning more about the 59 people killed in the massacre. kenneth craig has that part of the story. >> reporter: they were daughters and sons, fathers and mothers. >> she's heart and soul to the family. >> reporter: brokenhearted family members are remembering rocio guillen of california who leaves behind four children. >> the oldest, the two youngest are calling for mommy. it just breaks my heart. >> reporter: john phippen also had four children. contractors say they will miss the general contractor singing on the job and always lending a helping hand.

>> this is a really great guy that unfortunately many people will never get to know. >> reporter: cameron robinson lived in utah but worked in vegas. he was excited to attend the concert with his boyfriend. >> he was the best brother, uncle, son anybody could ask for. >> reporter: students in gallup-mckinley, new mexico, held a vigil to remember their high school office secretary, lisa romero-muniz who was their friend and advocate. >> she loved with all her heart. it's not going to be the same without her. >> reporter: curt von tillow is described as a great golfer who will be remembered for his laugh and unwavering patriotism. and friends praise bailey schweitzer from backers field. >> she's going to be truly missed everywhere. >> reporter: the city of las vegas has set up assistance

centers to help families, and hotels are offering rooms at no cost. kenneth craig, cbs news, las vegas. later today house democrats will gather on the capitol steps to de. president trump said a debate on gun control will come as time goes by, but it's not for now. speaker ryan said there's no plan for house action soon on an nra-sponsored bill to ease regulations on silencers. >> that bill's not scheduled now. i don't know when it will be scheduled. right now we're focused passing our budget r last year they seized the floor for 24 hours to try to pass the bill but it never happened. ahead on "cbs this morning," norah o'donnell is in las vegas, and she'll have the latest on the shooting massacre, the gunman, and the victims. well, the white house is expected to ask congress for another $29 billion in disaster assistance. $13 billion of that would be funding for recovery from the

hurricanes that struck puerto rico, texas, and elsewhere. $16 billion would be for flood insurance relief. in puerto rico, the death toll from hurricane maria jumped to 54. president trump visited the struggling island yesterday. most residents are without water nearly two weeks after the storm hit. the president repeatedly played down the destruction and praised the effort calling the recovery nothing short of a miracle. david begnaud is in san juan. >> you don't need them anymore. you don't need them anymore. >> reporter: president trump seemed unaware that 94% of the island is still without power. he handed out supplies like prizes, lobbing paper towels into the crowd. >> how did your house do? >> reporter: flanked by the first lady, president trump visited the area. the trump administration has been criticized for a slow

response following hurricane maria, but the president awarded himself an a-plus, and congratulated the officials on the relatively low death toll compared to what he called a real catastrophe like katrina. mr. trump also reminded the island of its debts. >> i hate to tell you, puerto rico, you've thrown our budget a little out of whack. >> reporter: one place that has not gotten relief is in utuado. a world away from everyone else. people are drinking and bathing in the stream. in the city of san juan, people were not happy with his visit. >> it's like a show house, a show. >> i don't think what he said is appropriate as we are suffering now as a country. >> reporter: one of president trump's fiercest critics was the

mail yore of san juan who said, you're killing us with inefficiency, but afterward she said there seems to be a disconnect with how things are supposed to happen and how they're really happening. david begnaud, cbs news, san juan. today the former ceo of eck question fax is scheduled to return to capitol hill for more testimony. yesterday richard smith said the attack happened because of a combination of human and technical error. >> i'm ultimately responsible and i take full responsibility. i'm here today to say to each and every person affected by this breach, i'm truly and deeply sorry for what happened. >> the data breach announced last month estimates 145 million americans. smith outlined a support package for victims that allows for free credit monitoring and allows

consumers to repeatedly lock and unlock their credit files. senator ron wyden wants to know how the voting manufacturing plan to protect themselves from cyber attacks. some had said they were targeted by russian government hackers in the 2016 election. department of homeland security officials said in june that russian hackers did not target voting infrastructure but at least one state board election website had been compromised. coming up on the morning news now, restricting abortions. the house passes a bill with support from the white house. and obesity danger. being overweight is linked to more than a dozen cancers. this is the "cbs morning news."

"usa today" says kushner's e-mail was rerouted to white house routers. kushner and ivanka rerouted their e-mail days after his personal e-mail account became public. last month lawyers confirmed that kushner used a personal e-mail account to communicate with other white house officials. georgia's "ledger enquirer" looks at a report that says cancers associated with people who were overweight make up cancers in the united states. the rate of obesity-related cancers rose by 7%. being overweight and obese are at increased risks of 13 types of cancer. the rates of cancers not related to weight decreased. >> and the "houston chronicle"

largest hack in history got bigger. yahoo! who initially said it affects 1 billion users actually affected all of its 3 billion accounts. the breach was originally revealed in december. the stolen information includes names, e-mail addresses, phone numb numbers, birth dates, security questions, and answers. wall street was relatively quiet but gains in airlines and auto shops pushed higher. the dow gained 84 points, the s&p rose 5 points, and the nasdaq added 15 points. ford plans to cust costs by $15 billion. ford plans to drop some car models and refocus on trucks, suvs, and electric vehicles. ford's ceo says he wants to update factories and speed up development. and if you think you're paying more to access your money at an atm, you're right. for the 11th consecutive year, atm fees reached a record high. the average cost for a

president trump will visit las vegas today. by one estimate, stephen paddock fired off as many as nine rounds per scored. carter evans looked at how he might have turned a rifle into a rapid-fire weapon. >> this is not an automatic weapon, but it's been modified to shoot like one and it's completely legal. it's done with a simple plastic device known as a bump stock that converts a semiautomatic rifle to perform like a automatic rifle. a semiautomatic requires the shooter to squeeze the trigger each time to fire the bullet. law enforcement said the shooter used a bump stock to convert guns. photos show two ar-15s on the floor. experts believe this one has the device installed. >> it's not an automatic gun itself. the gun itself has to recock every time and the trigger has to be pulled each and every

time. >> reporter: but he showed how it allows for continuous firing as it slides back and forth on the stock. >> so basically when you place your trigger finger on the trigger, here in this little groove, you're basically pressing against this and holding there and the trigger itself is trapped down inside. >> reporter: the bump stock allows the shooter to shoot hundreds of rounds per minute. >> it is not a practical device, but it is one that allows people to experience the simulation of fully automatic fire. >> reporter: the devices are made by several manufacturer. in nevada, there is no permit, background check, or waiting period to buy one. we picked one up at this gun shop in las vegas for less than $200. >> people are buying it for a range toy. it's not a practical device. >> reporter: it's illegal to buy these since 1986.
