total confidence. that's what the president says he has as rex tillerson as he considered resigning. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. stephen paddock's girlfriend says he was a kind, caring, quiet man and she has no idea what prompted him to unleash a deadly barrage of gunfire at a las vegas concert, but it's clear the attack was well plan and intended to inflict considerable damage. the sheriff said he had plans to escape. at least 58 people were killed and hundreds injured. mola lenghi is in las vegas with more. mola, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the clark county sheriff says while there is no concrete evidence of anyone helping stephen paddock carrying out his deadly massacre, he doesn't believe he could have acted alone from the stockpiling of weapons, planning, and the execution. the sheriff suggests at some

point paddock had to have had some help. investigators in las vegas continue to comb through the life and hotel room of gunman stephen paddock trying to figure out why he carried out sunday's massacre. >> we don't have any immediately accessful thumbprints that would indicate the shooter's ideology or motivation. >> president trump visited the city wednesday to meet with survivors and first responders as authorities provided fresh insight into the fateful night. they say there's evidence paddock planned to escape rather than kill himself as officers close in. officials add that none of the cameras paddock brought to his hotel room were recording. joseph lombardo said it's impossible to imagine one man alone could have stockpiled this. >> you have to make the assumption somebody was helping at some point. >> reporter: investigators are hoping pad tock can yield son answers. she voluntarily flew back from

the philippines tuesday night and met with the fbi for hours of questions. just before the shooting patrick sent marilou danley to her native country and wired her money. she thought he was planning for a breakup. >> it never occurred to me in in way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone. >> reporter: law enforcement said paddock stockpiled 49 guns since 1982 and bought 33 over the last year. authorities have adjusted the number of injured to 489. that's down from the more than 500 originally reported. more than 300 have been released from the hospital, but about two dozen remain in critical condition. anne-marie. >> mola lenghi in las vegas. thank you so much, mola. as we had reported, paddock had been stockpiling weapons. he purchased the guns in four states, nevada, california, utah, and texas. most were rifles. that's why through the atf,

newspaper published text messages indicating he asked his mistress to get an abortion. turns out she was not pregnant. murphy said in a statement he'll take personal time to seek help as my family and i continue to work through our personal difficulties. three u.s. army special operation forces were killed when they were ambushed by suspected al qaeda militants in southwest niger. two other u.s. soldier were also wounded. american forces are in niger. the trump administration is backing away from the president's suggestion that the u.s. would have to wipe out puerto rico's debt. the island is $74 billion in debt and sought bankruptcy protection last year. mr. trump's comments tuesday night sent the value of puerto recan bonds plunging, but budget director mick mulvaney said there are no plans for a

he's part of the canine comfort dog program run by the lutheran church charities. quarterback cam newton made a sexist comment to a reporter, and a warning about future russian meddling. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" says the heads say russian meddling continues. richard burr and mark warner said russian operatives are determined to sow chaos in the elections next month and next year, and they also said the investigation has not been yet able to determine if russia coordinated with the trump campaign to sway the 2016 election. the "sun sentinel" reports that prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty for the woman accused of dressing up like a clown in 1990 and shooting the wife of her future husband. warren was extradited on tuesday

where she lived with the victim's husband for years. the "detroit free press" reports on a michigan mom being jailed for refusing a court order to vaccinate her 9-year-old son. a judge ordered rebecca brado for seven days for not getting her son vaccinated. her husband wanted her son vaccinated, but brado is the primary caregiver. all five former presidents will attend a hurricane relief concert at texas a&m university. former presidents george h.w. bush, barack obama, george w. bush, bill clinton, and jimmy carter will be at the october 28st concert. it will benefit texas, puerto rico, and the virgin islands. george bush's presidential library is on campus. and a sexist comment by cam newton to a female reporter.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch" small banks may soon get a bank and google unveils its latest pixel smartphone. hena doba has more from the new york stock exchange. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. the government releases its jobs report tomorrow. they expect a weaker ronlt from the month before. a report from payroll processor adp report yesterday found hiring by employers weakened sharply last month. the dow gained nearly 20 points, the s&p gained nearly 3 points higher, and the nasdaq gained three points.

fed chair yelin spoke on easing regulations. yelin spoke to a community banking conference in st. louis yesterday. yelin has spoke on the banking crisis but said there is room to ease regulations. one example, increasing the number of community banks eligible for less frequent examinations. wells fargo says it's refunding some mortgage rate locked extension fees. the fees are supposed to be charged when a borrower fails to finish his paperwork on time and wanted a quoted rate. they'll return the money where the delay was the bank's fault. amazon has been ordered to pay backes taxes. amazon says it's appealing. the eu is cracking down on what it considers unfair or illegal tax deal. amazon was allowed to funnel a p portion of its profits to a

♪ i'm walking on sunshine astronauts aboard the international space station are getting ready for a spacewalk this morning. two astronauts will venture outside to do maintenance on the station's robotic arm. it's the first of three scheduled spacewalks this month. when you think of drivers getting distracted behind the wheel, you generally think of smartphones, but a new study says technology built into the dashboard can also be dangerous. meg oliver has more. >> reporter: infotainment puts technology at our fingertips, but a new study finds it can be extremely distracting. researchers had volunteers test 30 different vehicles on a residential screen. they measured how much the driver had to look at the screen

and think about what they were doing while making a call, sending a text, or using a s.t.e.r.e.stai stereo system. a professor from the university of utah led the research. >> some of the systems are difficult for a driver to use. >> reporter: the study found drivers were visually distracted for more than 40 seconds when programming the navigation system or sending a text message. aaa says removing your eyes from the road fort nd doubles the risk of a crash. this man took part in the study and nearly missed a stop sign while using the touch screen. >> those are what make me most uncomfortable. >> reporter: researchers say voice commands also take the driver's attention off the road. look at this woman's eyes as she tries to make a call.

aaa is sharing the results with automakers. safety experts want car companies to change infotainment systems so the most distracting systems are locked out when the car is in motion. meg oliver, cbs news, new york. the word "love" has gotten the massachusetts bakery into some hot water. they listed love in its ingredient on its label for its granola but the government wasn't feeling the love. in a letter they told the bakery to remove the word. they told them love is not the name of the ingredient. >> i think people, you know, they like the fact that it has love on the label. i thought it was appropriate. evidently not. that yesterday the fda said using the word "love" was only one violation. they said the bakery was also cited for failing to clean the facility properly. love is a little dirty. coming up on "cbs this

gave no details. in the past year he bought 33 firearms. most of them were rifles. and police are looking into whether or not he had help. two people who have careers in saving lives found themselves in the middle of the massacre sunday night. carter evans has the story. it was absolutely the worst feeling. >> reporter: firefighter ben cole knew his daughter was in the crowd. >> there was 22,000 people there. >> i was looking for one. i was looking for one. >> reporter: he was off-duty enjoying the concert. his 20-year-old daughter rachel was working there, an emt. he found her. >> we embraced and said let's get to work. >> i said, you're on my hip. let's get to work. let's go. >> reporter: they immediately began treating everybody they could.

>> people were screaming there are some head shots over there. unfortunately there's nothing i can do for that. it's horrible for me, 100 times worse for them. >> there was a woman lying on the floor and a man crouched by her. i asked if they needed medical attention. he waved me off. the fact that he could be so selfless and know there are others in need as well. >> reporter: what they endured that night is sinking in. >> when you close your eyes at night and you see all the lights and all the people, that's something you can't run from. >> what's it like to see him shaken to the core? >> i don't see him shaken to the core. i see him when everything was in chaos pulling together, giving instructions, not breaking down. >> i'm glad my daughter said it didn't strike me to my core. it did. this hit me hard. >> reporter: they're now both seeking help. >> a counselor said if you let this fear change your life, then he's taking another victim.
