more ground on the destructive wine country wildfires. good a now at noon, the winds take a break giving firefighters a chance to gain more ground on the destructive wine country wild fire. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny troy. we're seeing more containment of the fires burning in napa and sonoma

county. 15% contain. on the 36000 fire with 70% conte work isn't done yet. we have live team coverage t let's go [indiscernible] live in napa where -- jessica. >>reporter: michelle, the fire e all morning and investigators are trying to figure out what happened in a -- when a water operator veered off the road. you can see the water tanker off the road. owe was rolling down here -- he was rolling down here when cal fire got the call there's been an accident. day 8 of the wine country fire and tragedy strikes. a firefighter who was a contractor died when his water tanker rolled over. according to cal fire he was heading down the steep oakville grade helping fight the nun fire. >> this is a steep road. oakville grade is known as one of the steepest roads in napa county.

i have no confirmation to what the cause of his driving off the road was. >> investigators will be looking at all possible causes including fatigue. >> everyone is getting tired. there has been no break for these firefighters since the fires erupted last sunday evening. and so yes, people are getting tired and that is a factor we are aware of. >> cal fire says dispute the latest deaths, firefighters are making progress in napa, strengthen control lines and getting more resources and the nun fire is 50% contained. the atlas fire is 68% contained. after trying more than 50,000 acres and burning down 300 homes. some evacuations have been lifted allowing napa county resident to go home and sift through what remains. >> i'm realizing you don't go sift through stuff. there's nothing to sift through. >> and now the county set up an assistance center at the health and human services center in the

county, open 7-days a week and folks who have been affected by the fires in napa county can apply for a state and federal financial aid. live in napa, i'm jessica flores, kpix5. >> the oakmont fire burning in sonoma county is gaining ground. wpix5 anne mack vick is live in oakmont and tell us firefighters are worried it may merge with an already massive fire. >>reporter: it could merge with the nun's fire to the south. the oakmont fire is relatively small compared to the other fires burning in wine country. it's about 900 acres right now. and it is stubborns have been -- firefighters set up this base camp fighting the fire from the air and the ground. the fire is burning aggressively through hood mountain regional park and while it has been advancing to the in the east, the nun's fire to the south is catching up and town fire says they may soon

merge. >> some of the areas we can't put people in. it's just too steep or the terrain is too much or too dense. >> firefighters are working 24 hour shifts on this fire as it spreads across the ridge line. they're trying to protect the homes in these hills. >> we're putting forth every effort we can mustard up to do that -- >> i have a 10-month-old baby. a girlfriend, and two dogs that were trying to get back home. >> max has been evacuated from his home in glen ellen for eight days and he doesn't know if it's still standing. >> it's emotional. i've gotten barely any sleep, so it's heartbreaking. >> what's next for max, what's next for this fire. both very much up in the air. >> the fires are unpredictable. we have different weather patterns coming in by the end of the week. we'll see. the good news, no structuren

ed in this fire. the bad news, the air quality is awful out here. it should be a sunny day, but it's gray and nasty. you might be able to see the debris, some of the ash reigning down on us. right now, live in oakmont, anne macavick. more help could be on the week. firefighters with our changing weather. we have that part of the story with neda. >>reporter: we didn't see much branches flying around or ambers but because it's our winds have stayed calm throughout the morning hours. as we keep checking the monitors, they've stayed calm to 3 miles-an-hour -- some dropped down to the 20s. and temperatures are now in the low 70s. these temperatures are going to get hot later on today. we're expecting to see temperatures in the mid 80s to even near 90s for a lot of that

area. you can see this live shot here with all that smoke anne is referring to. it's pushing toward san francisco and san jose. temperatures will stay warm today which could be critical this afternoon. but the winds stay calm and then we're going to get an onshore breeze to come in. that will help cool things down, shift the winds a little bit at least going from the west to the east instead. and a chance of rain does arrive by wednesday night, possibly, but mostly thursday into friday and the total with the rain could range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain across those areas that are currently under siege by the fire. that's going to be great news. we'll time it out closer in a bit and show you where the rain may be coming down and talk more about those temperatures because we're going to see an increase, but then a drop. that's coming up. >> neda, thank you much. according to pg&e there's 22,000 customers without power in the

north bay. a little more than 15,000 in sonoma county. 17,000 customers are without gas service. pg&e says power should be restored later on today if they get the green light from cal fire to reenergize the line. federal assistance is available for the fire victims. people in six counties can apply for money for fema, that's blake -- sonoma and your belligerent counties. the fema money is -- rental assistance, home repairs, transportation, and medical and funeral expenses. fema says the best way to apply for benefits is through their website, disasterassistance.gov. in order to get benefits, one person in the household must be a u.s. citizen. a coast guard is searching for a worker when an oil ridge

exploded near new orleans. 7 people were hurt. three of them remain in critical condition. the blast rattled homes miles away. >> it sound like a bomb dropping basically. and the whole house lit up with an orange flash. >> coast guard crews are searching for one missing worker. crews were using cleaning chemical platform when it blew up. tropical ophelia is being blamed for three deaths. it's the worst storm to hit the country in more than 55 years. >>reporter: ireland rarely see storms like this. 100 mile an hour wind gust and waves -- heavy rain and flooding from storm surges could follow. >> we have trees down. >> the prime minister advised everyone to stay indoors. >> this is a national red alert and this applies to all counties and areas. >> ophelia was downgraded from a

hurricane to a tropical storm -- a woman was killed when a tree fell on her car. downed power lines knocked out electricity to more than 100,000 homes and businesses. the government said ophelia could be the worst storm to hit when hurricane debbie killed 11 -- terry okia. >> there's people in northern ireland and they say the storm will cause power outages and public transportation delays. check out the sky overland do not today. it turned an unusual shade of yellow thanks to ophelia. it brought smoke from wild fires in central you're especially. launders posted pictures on southerly media. >> to the white house. president trump is trying to

counties... is reopening two stations today... that were closed because of wildfire- related issues. a north" and the smart commuter rail service in marin and sonoma county are opening two stations that were closed because of the wild fire related issues. the santa rosa north are back in session. smart -- the fbi is out with a new warning about kidnapping calls. it's a spiking case where criminals lie about taking a person's loved one and demand money. there's a campaign to get more people informed. >> i don't think my adrenaline has been that call. >> a phone call came to a father in the dallas area. >> he asked if i dropped this call, he was going to kidnap my son. >> they called her -- >> the men says we have cut off her finger, and if you want the rest of her in a body bag, it's

your choice. >> to get her back, he told soble she would have to send the money and if the meantime -- >> if you disconnect this phone you're dead. >> she sent close to 4,000 to mexico and the would-be kidnapping hung up. her daughter hasn't been kidnapped. she was fine. but the fbi says these fake kidnapping calls are on the rise. >> it's a quick, a get rick scheme where they can expert victims and wire money to mexico. >> ferguson is a section chief who says those calls usually come from criminals in mexican prisons and he says prisoners use smuggled cell phones inform random dial numbers in the u.s. and make their threats and the family or friends pick up the cash -- >> i don't think it's just in the prison system, but i would see the large majority come from

experienced throughout the morning hours. later on, 6:00, 7:00, staying around the two to three mile-per-hour zone. that's good news. that's going to help out especially with the temperatures increasing. so here's a look at our air quality today. another spare alert today. unhealthy for people who are sensitive to all of that smoke. moderate for the coast and central bay, and the south bay as well. santa clara can be unhealthy too. winds from the northeast. it's pushing the smoke toward the coast. we're going to get a shift and see west winds coming through. we're getting an onshore flow. that will provide cooling, and it's going to push the smoke further out east. here's a look at our conditions across the bay. it looks fairly clear. it doesn't smell as smoky out tn a spare the air alert is in effect. concord, 68. oakland, our highs are going to be hot. 14 degrees above average. so again near 90s for santa rosa, napa, 84 will be the high.

82 is the high in san francisco. 84 for oakland. sunset happening at 6:30 p.m. i want to show you what's going on with the rain chances here. we have this high pressure as it moves further east. that's when we'll start to get that onshore flow and there's a slow just to the north. as i set this into motion, wednesday night possibly, but most likely thursday night we could see rainfall coming down from places where those fires are burning like cloverdale and santa rosa and napa. that 7-day forecast showing this drop in our temperatures for the next few days by tuesday and wednesday. thursday, friday, look at that. i like to see those rain -- the rain in the forecast there. and by the next weekend, that's when we'll start to get that [indiscernible]. over to you guys. >> neda, thanks so much. needing glasses as early as preschool. youth with vision problems. what's cool about your school, you can nominate your
