live from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. now at noon, a close call at sfo involving the same airline that came within seconds of hitting other planes on the runway last time. good afternoon, i'm kenny. michelle is on assignment. kpix5 is live with the latest

on this investigation. jackie. kenny, we are near sfo. here's where it all happened. the runways are behind us. as you remember, three months ago, this is after an air canada jet caused a close call here at sfo. here we go again. this time, the federal aviation administration says flight 781 was cleared to land on runway 28r by air traffic control. then, 781 was told to execute a go around because atc was unsure that the runway would be cleared in time. within 30 seconds, the flight crew was told to go around six times, but the tower never got a response. that prompted an airport supervisor to use a red light gun to alert the crew. >> 781 go around. air canada 781 go around. canada 781 go around. >> back in july, you may remember a similar incident like this happening when an air canada pilot almost landed on

the taxi way. coming within seconds of crashing with two other planes. the plane landed safely and avoided the collision. in regards to sunday night's event, air canada released a statement. upon landing, the crew was informed the tower had attempted unsuccessfully to contact the aircraft. however, the message was not received by the crew. air canada is investigating the circumstances. after flight 781 landed safely and only after the landing did they finally get in touch with the tower and say that they were having radio problems. the faa is now investigating. near sfo, jackie ward, kpix5. los angeles police saying the fire sent thick smoke over the area forcing traffic to stop on a major freeway. two cars were also damaged by the brush fires. crews got the fires under control within an hour. fire danger is a concern all over the state right now, including here in the bay area as we see unseasonal heat from

san francisco on inland, to dublin. >> it's hot and it's dry out there. we are already seeing humidity levels drop. let me show you what you can expect. temperatures 20 degrees above average. yesterday, will be the hottest day of the week. if you find it uncomfortable, there will be slight relief. not much for the next few days. offshore winds, you can see the trees moving around and it is very dry up in those hills. and temperatures right now are warm. 84 degrees already at this noon hour in concord. oakland 74. san francisco we're in the 80s as well. san jose, 83. so, add about 10 degrees to those temperatures for your day and that's what the afternoon will look like. look at these east winds. they are coming in strong in livermore. 14 miles coming in over these hills. oakland hills, saw some gusts this morning about 20 miles per hour. now down to 16. those are sustained winds we're looking at. so, it is getting intense with these northeast winds and that's why our humidity is now

down into the 20s and 30s for some areas like oakland and livermore and concord. and halfmoon bay. i'll talk more about those temperatures in a bit. >> thank you. there's a long road ahead for rebuilding after the wine country fires. officials are not wasting any time. kpix5 joins us live from santa rosa to tell us what the plan is now. jessica. >> good afternoon, now the sonoma county supervisors are meeting behind me right now. that meeting started at 8:30 a.m. and they are currently discussing housing policies to help the hundreds of displaced residents who lost their homes in the wild fires. now they are considering two options on the table at this moment. one is actually allowing people to sleep in rv's or guest houses and the second one is putting a temporary freeze on rental property, hoping that those rental properties, vacation rental properties go to some of these displaced residents. >> thousands of homes destroyed. now thousands of residents

scrambling to find a place to live. the wine country fires compasser baiting the housing crisis here. >> it was bad. it's gotten worse and we're seeingridiculous posts of people seeking 7, 8, $20,000 a month for housing. >> the sonoma county district attorney says her office will go after landlords and contractors preying on fire victims. >> the protections are found within the law. so, if people are concerned that the law is being broken, they need to contact us. >> we are definitely looking at a multiyear process. i mean, it's going to take months to perform the base level cleanup to make sure that the sites are free of toxins and are stable to be rebuilt on. >> state agencies are leading the cleanup efforts. property owners must sign waivers, allowing the government to haul away their debris. those who clean up themselves could be ineligible for government reimbursements. >> reporter: the supervisor says cleanup crews are mobilizing, possibly starting the cleanup as early as this

week. they expect sonoma county to be cleaned up. hopefully by this string. reporting live in santa rosa, kpix5. >> jessica, thanks. california senator is taking the wine country fire crisis to her colleagues in washington. she made a plea to pass a bill for supplemental emergency funds. >> too often, states are picking up the bill for forest management. we should make it clear. fires are not partisan. this bill is a bipartisan bill and it should be inserted cleanly into the next supplemental emergency package. >> harris went on to say that the federal government needs to shoulder more of the burden for natural disasters by preparing for future disasters. a new witness is expected to take the stand today in the murder trial of the undocumented man accused of killing kate steinly. kpix5 is live at the courthouse where day two of testimony is already underway. ann. >> reporter: we heard this morning from a tourist from the

east coast who was on the pier when the shooting occurred, and before that point, she says she remembers seeing a man she describes as the suspect in this case. that his appearance disturbed her. laughing at people who were walking past. now that witness also ultimately heard the shots ring out after she turned her back. that is when kate was killed while walking on pier 14 with her father. jose admits to firing the shot, but his lawyer says it was an accident. that his client was handling a handgun. he found wrapped in a t-shirt under a bench on the pier when it accidentally fired. prosecutors say they will prove that he fired the gun on purpose and that he was wrecklessly pointing it at people on the pier. >> you can hear weeks of

testimony. one baseline question that the jury will answer. and that is whether or not the defendant plans to pull the trigger. >> is an undocumented immigrant who had been deported five times. he is now charged with second- degree murder. the maximum sentence, 15 years to life in prison. the jury is made up of six men and six women. the trial expected to last about a month. live in san francisco, kpix5. >> new at noon, california's top judge says she wants to do away with the state's cash bail system. state supreme court chief justice, said today that the golden state should rely on risk assessments to decide whether the defendants should be released before trial. opponents say that the prospect of forfeeting the money insures people show up for court. a working lunch today for president trump. he is meeting with republican senators to push his tax reform plan. mola reports he needs a unified

there's a new scam that you should know about before you get a google search. a woman googled the name of recommended repair shop. she calledded and made an appointment to have her washing machine fixed. the next day, two guys showed up after they charged her $420. they did nothing, so she turned to the internet again, got a different number for the same shop to call and complain. >> he had no idea what i was

talking about. >> i told her, i said i haven't had any work. so i couldn't have been to your house. >> the woman was finally able to track down the repairman that came to her house. they did pay her back and when asked, google released add statement that said merchants through google my business, are notified by e-mail. after more than 100 year prop, sears will no longer sell whirlpool appliances. whirlpool is making demands that would make it virtually impossible to sell products at a competitive price. sears has been increasingly losing ground to amazon and home depot. temperatures in los angeles could top 100 degrees today. making tonight's game one of the world series the hottest in history. cbs reporter, danielle nottingham on the safety measures being taken at dodger stadium. >> baseball fall classic may seem more like a summer sizzle when the dodgers and astros take the field this evening in

game one of the world series. the temperatures are expected to top 100 degrees in los angeles today. and could still be hovering near triple digits when the first pitch is tossed around 5:00 p.m. pacific time. fans outside dodger stadium are ready for a scorcher. >> we brought plenty of water. we'll be walking around, enjoying the world series. >> for the fans that will fill the stand, the heat can be dangerous without proper hydration. the l.a. fire department will have extra paramedics on hand just in case. the astros play in a climate controlled stadium back in houston. but tonight starting pitcher, dallas, is unphased by the heat. >> i like to get that perspiration. it's the world series. so, if it's a little hotter than usual, that's fine with me. there's no place i'd rather be. >> the heat wave could benefit the batters. baseballs tend to travel further in hot weather and if that's the case, fans may be in for quite a show. danielle nottingham, cbs news, los angeles. yeah, it's hot down there

and we have a sizzle up here. >> yes, we do. we have triple digits in l.a. but all across the state of california, it is hot. so, record breaking conditions down in l.a., long beach hit 105, expected to do the same today. here are warnings for the sate's heat advisories. so that means look before you lock. of course, hydrate. limit your time in the sun. right now, here are some of the areas expectedded to be beat records today. san jose, concord, low 90s expected for these afternoon highs. heyward 99. napa 94. so, records were broken tomorrow. we're expecting those same cities to break some more today. here's a look at the east bay, 90 degrees for fair field. 87, vallejo, 88. we saw these east winds coming through and they were dry and every time those winds come through over those hillsides, it's going to cause some problems, some concern with

fire danger, of course. sunset happening at 6:19 and that will provide some relief. it did stay pretty warm at the beaches this morning, halfmoon bay was in the 80s. steve udelson stays warm, depending on go that wind will blow. we'll continue to get those east winds for awhile because of this high pressure. but sits right over the state and it is sending that wind stream just from the dry desert air to us. so that offshore wind today and then what's going to happen tomorrow is a slight on shore breeze. you can start to see the winds shift and that will help drop our temperatures, but it's not going to be by very much. look at this. our high today in san francisco. 87. we'll be dropping to 80 tomorrow. down into the upper 70s. mid 70s by the time we get to saturday. inland, that's not going to be the case. we're staying in the 90s all the way through friday and look at that. by saturday, sunday inland temperatures in the upper 80s. along the bay, the weekend will be down into the mid 70s.

treating wrinkles. on the health watch, while it's better known for treating wrinkles, botox may bring significant relief to children and teenagers with migraines. a study tracked young people who do not respond to traditional medicines for those migraines. those treated with botox injections had fewer headaches and they were less painful. a trial is underway that allows doctors to screen newborn babies for 1800 genetic conditions. they are using sequencing to look for hidden problems. the baby seek project is recruiting hundreds of
