good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. at least eight people were killed when a man drove a truck down a crowded bike path in new york. it's the deadliest in new york since 9/11. the suspect sayfullo saipov is in serious condition after he was shot by police. he drove down the bike path for nearly a mile. he crashed into a school bus near the world trade center. he got out and yelled allahu akbar, god is great. police believe he acted as a lone wolf and they say there is no evidence to suggest that this is part of a wider plot. hena doba is at the scene in manhattan with the very latest. good morning, hena. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. law enforcement believes isis may have been involved.

it happened behind me. i don't know if you can see the barricades, right by the world trade center. like you mentioned, despite investigators believing he is a lone wolf, the suspect is a lone wolf, security has been stepped up throughout the city. overnight investigators continue to comb the scene for evidence in the deadly terror attack in lower manhattan. a federal law enforcement source tells cbs that a note referencing isis was found inside the vehicle used to run down several people. >> central, be advised. we have multiple people on the ground from halston to chambers. people on the ground. we need people all the way down to chambers. i've got four or five people on the ground. >> we've got multiple casualties. this is a mass casualty situation here. >> reporter: police say sayfullo saipov, a native who came from

uzbekistan, drove down pedestrians. he then collided with a school bus injuring two adults and two children. >> the driver of the truck exited the truck brandishing two handguns. they confronted the suspect and shot him in the abdomen. police say they turned out to be a paint ball and a pellet gun. >> hours after the shooting they converged on a new jersey home depot where he is believed to have rented the truce used in the attack. law enforcement says they believe the suspect acted as a lone wolf and not as part of a wider terror plot. even still, security has been stepped up, and nypd officers have been deployed throughout the city. now we know the suspect was shot in the stomach by the police officers. he underwent surgery and is expected to survive. anne-marie.

>> hena doba here in new york city. thank you so much, hena. we're learning more about sayfullo saipov as hena mentioned. he came from you beck extend in 2010. it's believed he first lived in ohio before moving to florida. he was a commercial truck driver, formed a pair of businesses in ohio. he was known to be recently living in new jersey where he rented the truck that he used in the attack. saipov also drove for the ride-sharing giant uber, and uber says he passed all background trips. of those killed, five were from argentina. they were in town celebrating their 30th anniversary of their high school graduate. another tourist from belgium was also killed. and president trump took to twitter to say another attack by a very sick and deranged person and declared not in the usa. he also tweeted, i have just ordered homeland security to

step up our already extreme vetting program. being politically correct is fine but not for this. following the attack, security around new york city was beefed up. there was security deployed in key locations. the move is out of an abundance of caution and there is no ongoing threat. security in los angeles an boston was also increased. and ahead on "cbs this morning," new york governor andrew cuomo will join us on the latest in this terror attack. in other news, the white house decided to hold off for one day the rollout of the proposal of the tax cut. they have agreed to cut the corporate tax to 20% and keep the top personal income tax rate at 39.6%. the house ways and means committee expected to vote on the bill by next week. executives of social media

misconduct allegations against actor kevin spacey. those are some of the stories on this morning's headlines. a man barged into his child's school in riverside and took a female teacher hostage in an empty classroom. students were evacuated from the school. police stormed the classroom and shot and killed the suspect. the teacher was not hurt. new hampshire's valley news says the state's attorney general has launched an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct against dartmouth college. the school's president said, quote, sexual misconduct and harassment have no place at dartmouth. "the baltimore sun" says netflix has suspended "house of

cards" due to allegations of sexual misconduct against actor kevin spacey. on sunday actor andrew rapp said spacey made advances on him at a party when he was 14 but spacey says s apologize and said he didn't remember the incident. they testified at bergdahl's sentencing yesterday. he pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior for walking off his post in afghanistan in 2009. he was held by the taliban for five years and released in a prisoner swap. still to come, a lawsuit against generic drugmakers expands. how many manufacturers are now accused of conspiring to boost prices. accused of conspiring to boost prices. i used to have more hair. i used to have more color.

on the "cbs moneywatch," a lawsuit against generic drugmakers expands, and exxon mobile agrees to spend $300 million on preventing pollution. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. we'll start with this. wall street is on fed watch and donald trump is expected to name jerome powell as the new chair of the fed. here on wall street the dow rose 28 points yesterday. the s&p 500 gained 2 points. october was at benchmark seven straight months of gains, and nasdaq added 28 ganlts. exxon mobile agrees to pay a $2.8 million fine and spend $300 million on technology along the gulf coast. the violations date back to 2005.

here's look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. continuing our coverage of the deadly new york city terror attack, at least eight people were killed and 11 people seriously hurt when a man drove a rented truck nearly a mile down a crowded bike path. he eventually crashed into a school bus. one witness described what he saw. >> we saw a pickup truck that was totaled. one man on the floor was trying to help him and two other people who were covered with sheets. they had bikes next to them. it looked like they were run over. >> the suspect sayefullo saipov

yelled "god is great" in arabic. he was shot by police. the obama foundation is holding a two-day summit aimed at inspiring a new generation of leaders. >> what's wrong with our politics in part is a reflection of something wrong in our civic culture, not just here in the united states but in many places around the world. >> england's prince harry spoke at the summit. he talked about the importance of service. former first lady michelle obama is one of the scheduled speakers today. the foundation says the event is one of many it's planning in the coming years. the nation's opioid epidemic is targeting teenagers as well. many kids face another challenge when they get out of rehab, go back to school, and face the tell taugs of doing drugs again. kenneth craig reports on the growing interest of recovery high school.

>> reporter: lisa was 14 years old when she tried drugs for the first time, but then in two years drinking and getting high were her top priorities. at 16 she left school for rehab. >> my life was really out of control. i thought about it and thought there's no way i can live the rest ott my life like this. i can't do this anymore. >> reporter: she never returned to her public high school in new jersey and instead completed her senior year at this recovery high school. >> some of the support groups will happen here. >> reporter: it's part classroom, part recovery program, where stujt students c to being drug- and alcohol-free, away from the temptations of their pasts. >> when you look at our kids, they go from treatment right back into the same district or school. they're surrounded by their same friends where unfortunately they're meeting their drug dealers and drug-using friends. in the past four years the number has grown rapidly. >> i don't care that it's one

uzbekistan, drove a truck down a bike path mowing down pedestrians and bicyclists. he then collided with a school bus, injuring two adults and two children. as you mentioned, eight people have died, 11 people were injured. police say after he crashed the pickup truck into the school bus, he jumped out yelling allahu akbar, god is great. police ended up shooting the suspect in the stomach and he underwent surgery and is expected to be alive. >> do they have any information? >> uber confirmed he worked for them for six months. they obviously revoked his right to do that. came into the country in 2010. he came legally. he lived in florida. he had a license in florida and new jersey. he's 29 years old. that's all the police are really releasing on the suspect just now aside from we know he worked for uber and he rented his truck at home depot in new jersey
