franchise history. >> and the astros bring home a win for hurricane-ravaged houston, and a former miss usa gets a proposal of a lifetime from her baseball beau. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a manhunt is under way this morning in colorado for a gunman who opened fire at a denver area walmart, killing three people. police released a security photograph of the suspect. he's described as a white mail. he started shooting last evening. witnesses say he fired at random with a handgun. >> i turn around and i see all the people walking, you know, falling down. they were really scared. >> i immediately froze because i didn't know what to think or what was going on. i heard two more shots and i hit the ground because i didn't know if there was going to be bullets flying. then i heard three more shots

and i got up and ran out as fast as i can. >> two more were wounded. other witnesses ran or hid. witnesses say the suspect left in a red mitsubishi mirage. there's no evidence that it was related to terror, but his motives are unclear. now to the truck rampage that killed eight people. the suspect is facing terrorist charges. sayfullo saipov told authorities he had been planning the attack for a year and he rehearsed is earlier this month. he hoped to hit more pedestrians and he wanted to hang an isis flag in his hospital room. meanwhile police are wanting to question a friend from y uzbekist uzbekistan, of saipov's.

hena doba is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the fbi leased the name of the second person, mukhammadzoir kadirov. they believe he's a friend of the suspect. they want to know if he played any role when the suspect crashed into the back of the school bus. nyc terrorist should get death penalty. that's a tweet from president trump overnight. sayfullo saipov crashed a truck into pedestrians on a bike path yesterday. >> we now have him charged with federal crimes of terrorism. >> reporter: saipov was wheeled in a wheelchair into court. >> a search of cell phones he was carrying in a bag carried thousands of videos and photographs. >> reporter: they found a note with islamic references. sources say he bragged about his success.

they say he planned the attack for about a year. he chose halloween because he believed more people would be out and about. law enforcement is trying to determine how he became radicalized. >> i think we've developed a level of conactivity between him and others who at various times have been the subject of investigations. >> reporter: saipov told investigators had he not ran into a school bus, his plan was to head to the brooklyn bridge and target more pedestrians there. he wanted to put isis flags on his truck but decided not to, believing it would cause too much attention. >> hena doba in new york. thank you, hena. the new york city police officer who shot saipov is being hailed as a hero but he doesn't think so. he and his partner raced to the site and saw a man waving guns and yelling. nash told him to drop the weapon and then fired. >> although i feel we were just

doing our job like thousands of officers do every day, i understand the importance of yesterday's events and the role we played and i'm grateful for the recognition we have received. >> nash said this is why he became a police officer. saipov was actually carrying a pellet gun and paint ball gun and he was hollering "god is great" in arabic. saipov had been on the fbi's radar, but he's not someone investigators believe was capable of mass murder. authorities say he was inspired by isis videos and decided to use a truck to carry out his attack two months ago. he searched the internet for information on halloween in new york city and truck rentals. over the past few years isis has urged followers online to use vehicles to kill people. >> he appears to have followed almost exactly to a "t" the instructions that isis has put

out on its social media channels before with instructions to its followers on how to carry out such an attack. >> prosecutors say saipov had 90 videos and 3,800 photos on his cell phone, isis propaganda. we're also learning more about the victims in the attack. six of the eight killed were from overseas. michelle miller has more. >> reporter: cell phone video shows them on a care-free ride along the waterfront minutes before they were mowed down. thaw were lifelong friends, all successful businessmen, all graduates from the same high school 30 years ago. this snapshot captured their excitement before boarding a plane to new york. it was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime. the men wearing matching t-shirts with the word "libre"

which means free in recognition of their friendship. also killed was 31-year-old ann-laure decadt. a young belgian woman who was visiting her sister and mother. she leaves behind a 3-month-old and a 23-month-old. and darren drake was a software owner. >> nice guy? >> reporter: james drake says his son was darren drake. the most innocent delicate kid in the world. the 33-year-old was a project manager with an investment firm. >> i'm not even angry. i'm not angry at all. hurt. i'm absolutely hurt. >> reporter: of the nine survivors, only three remain hospitalized. all here at new york presbyterian. michelle miller, cbs news, new york.

president trump is calling for the swift repeal of the immigration program that allowed sayfullo saipov to enter the u.s. in 2010. mr. trump is asking congress to do away with the visa lottery program. >> the universal lottery sounds nice, sounds good. it's not good. we've been against it. >> the visa lottery program was approved in 1990 with the aproovlg of both parties and signed into law by president george h.w. bush. he said he's open to sending saipov to the u.s. prison at guantanamo bay. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with john miller, the deputy commissioner of counterterrorism for the new york city police department

about the investigation into the bike path attacks. and for the fourth time, the cia released a collection of materials during a raid to capture osama bin laden. the images and computer files were recovering from bin laden's compound in pakistan. there is never-before-seen video of bin laden's son as an adult, home videos, and bin laden's 228-page handwritten journal. folks in houston are celebrating after the astros won the first world series in franchise history, ending a 55-year drought. >> it's a ground ball, right side. the houston astros are world champions! >> the astros beat the dodgers in game seven of the series, 5-1. charlie morton, usually a starter, pitched the final four innings. astros spz center fielder george springer hit his fifth series home run tying the record and had eight extra-base hits, the most ever in the world series.

he was named series mvp. the dodgers fell short in their first series since 188. back in houston fans took to the streets to celebrate. wearing "houston strong" logos on their jerseys, the astros won 101 regular season games playing for a city still recovering from hurricane harvey. they did it with a corps of young talent like shortstop carlos correa who celebrated a professional and personal milestone. he won the world series and the girl. >> you make me the happiest man in the world. will you marry me? >> oh, my god. >> will you marry me? >> oh, my god. >> how great is that? well, correa said he had been planning to propose to his girlfriend daniella rodriguez for about a month and thought this was the perfect time. coming up on the "morning

on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports that two deadly navy collisions were avoidable. seven sailors were killed in june when a destroy er collided in japan. in august ten sailors died when the destroyer "john s. mccain" collided. the navy report says the collisions were the result of crew and navigational errors. "michigan live" says some of the teenagers charged in the fatal rock-throwing incident will receive competency evaluations. a 32-year-old passenger was killed last month when a six-pound rock was thrown from an overpass crashing into the vehicle. five teenagers have been charged as adults with second-degree murder. the "hartford courant," reports a former student is charged with a hate crime involving her roommate.

its next meeting in december. president trump is expected to announce jerome powell as his next fed chairman. here on wall street a mixed finish fir stocks. the dow gained 57 points. the s&p 500 finished 5 points higher, while the nasdaq lost 11 points. bitcoin price reached an all-time high. they have climbed roughly 550% year to date, but analysts warn investing in crypto-currency like bitcoin is highly speculative and the market is highly unregulated. some retail stores are getting a jump on the holidays. sears and kmart introduced a blowout sale. the sale runs through november 25th. the stores claim it's to help

a california couple and their two daughters who were missing after armed pirates attacked their boat in brazil have been found alive. a spokesman for the family of adam and emily harteau say a fisherman found the couple and their two daughters ages 3 and 7 in the jungle. the family has been missing since sunday when pirates attacked their boat in the delta. they're said to be oklahoma except for insect bites and scratches. there's no word on how the family escaped. and new york's paley center focused on charlie rose, norah o'donnell, and gayle king who took part. the paley center picked "cbs this morning" as one of its

our top stories. a manhunt is under way for a gunman who opened fire at a walmart yesterday killing three people. police released photographs described as a white male. the motive is unclear. and federal terrorism charges have been brought against a man accused of a deadly truck attack in new york city. eight people were killed when a truck sped down a bike packet. authorities say sayfullo saipov was inspired by isis videos. one month after the las vegas massacre, three remain in the hospital.

as carter evans reports, the survivors are bonded not only by tragedy but by gratitude. >> i remember everything. >> you remember all of it even though you were shot in the face? >> yes. >> reporter: straining to speak, her jaw wired shut and healing from a tracheotomy, natalie's voice still resonates. >> as soon as i got shot, the girl next to me took her shirt off and pushed it against my face and said hold this. >> reporter: and in the balance she was comforted by another stranger who was also a victim. >> he saw me four times in the hospital. he said, you're going to be okay, natalie, we're almost there. >> and the whole time he had been shot too. >> he had been shot too. >> there's no way i would have made it out without the help of strangers. >> reporter: 18-year-old addison short was enjoying the route 91 festival with friends until a bullet shattered her leg.
