and new information on the deadly ambush. we go to the village where four american soldiers were killed by militants. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump leaves this morning for a five-country trip to asia. it's his longest trip to date and also the longest by a u.s. president to asia in more than a quarter century. during jobs in japan, south korea, vietnam, philippines, and china, north korea and trade are likely to dominate the conversation. the gop wants the plan passed before christmas. last night he tweeted great tax rollout today. the lobbyists are storming capitol hill but the republicans will hold strong and do what is right for america. it's the most extensive tax reform done in three decades, but it's not a done deal.

democrats attacked the proposal and some republicans are less than pleased. hena doba is here in new york with the details. good morning. >> good morning. the middle class will see the biggest benefits. democrats agree it will be the complete opposite. there will be lots of compromise to get this plan through. >> tax cuts, if we get this through, and i think we will, you're going to see this economy take off like a rocket ship. >> president trump on fox news called the tax overhaul the biggest tax cut in the history of our country. >> the middle class is a big beneficiary. jobs and companies are big beneficiaries. >> they would slash the individual brackets from 7% to 4%. it would only apply to households making a million dollars or more. the median household making $60,000 would see its rate drop from 15% to 12%.

the plan would double the standard deduction to 12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for couples. a typical family of four will save $1,182 a year. >> that 1$1,182 a year covers about a year's worth of gas for your car. it covers your family's phone bill for the year. >> the democrats indicate it hurts those in high-tax states like california and new york. >> what they won't tell you is that many, many, many middle-class families soo their taxes go up under this plan. >> some of the other changes in the plan, growing the child tax credit from 1,000 a year to $1,600. the bill will need the backing of nearly every republican to pass. the plan would also cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20% and eliminates deductions for student loans and medical expenses. anne-marie. >> thanks a lot, hena doba.

>> jared kushner turned over his documents pertaining to former fbi director james comey to robert mueller. meanwhile mueller's grand jury is investigating an influence campaign on behalf of ukrainian influences tied to former chair paul manner a fort. in particular mueller is investigating the lobbyist tony podesta. the senate democrats want to question attorney general jeff sessions again. sessions denies that he knew anything, but according to court documents, he was at a meeting where trump campaign adviser george papadopoulos discussed a possible meeting with president vladimir putin. this morning democratic leaders are reacting the allegations that hillary clinton's campaign took control of the national committee during the 2016 campaign. former dnc interim chairwoman donna brazile accuses the clinton campaign of taking control of the committee in exchange for funding to keep the committee financially afloat.

brazil in a forthcoming book previewed in politico says the clinton campaign influenced finances and strategy. she claims the deal showed favor it is. over bernie sanders. he and his supporters insisted it was biased against him. a vigil and memorial walk was held for victims of the new york city truck attack. last night's vigil started on the bike path where the killing began. five were friends, one was a young mother from belgium, and two were americans. earlier new york city officials put up additional concrete barriers along where the attack took place. the suspect sayfullo saipov should get the death penalty. michelle miller has more. >> reporter: this is the moment terrorist suspect sayfullo saipov was captured by new york police. the newly released cell phone

video shows right after the suspect was shot by 28-year-old new york police officer ryan nash as he tried to use a truck to drive down a west side bike path. he drove for a mile, killing eight, before crashing into a school bus. police found knives and notes praising isis inside the truck. and according to court documents, recovered two cell phones. authorities tracked the numbers on the phones and have linked them to sympathizers of a rad call cause who were already on new york police radar. the source says saipov made calls to some of those numbers the day of the attack. >> there's no point in thinking about the what-ifs. >> reporter: five days before the attack, a london-based graphic artist damian and his girlfriend were inside saipov's uber car for an hour.

he picked them up at the airport. there was nothing that gave us any sense of what was to come. >> sources say mukhammadzoir kadirov has now retained a lawyer and is said to be questioned on friday. michelle miller, cbs news, new york. we're learning more about the deadly walmart attack. police arrested scott ostream yesterday morning about five miles from the denver area walmart where he allegedly shot three people to death. his former boss said he abruptly quit his roofing job hours before the attack. a motive for the shooting. bashir wants armed drones operating near the border near mali. that's where four americans were killed by militants last month. we're learning more about the ambush.

debora patta went to the ambush site. >> reporter: the village of tongo tongo is so remote they had trouble finding the road to get there. this is where the 12-member american team and 13 military soldiers stopped to get supplies. a villager said he saw three or four armed men on motorcycles approach the u.s. convoy. he was so nervous, he walked 25 miles to speak to us at another location. we thought if it's just a few terrorists the soldiers can kill them easily, he said, but we didn't know there were so many more of them waiting nearby. it was a trap. once the isis fighters were able to lure them away from the village, they began the attack. you can see the bullet casing left over from the intense shooting. the burned out school, bloodstained bushes and empty

ammunition boxes are all that's left now. there were 60 attackers armed with machine guns and grenades. the fighting lasted over two hours. when it was over, he said he saw the bodies of three american soldiers slumped near their vehicle. all three were stripped of their uniforms. but it would be two days before children from the village discovered the fourth body of sergeant la david johnson about half a mile away. it's still not clear how johnson got separated from the rest. this soldier would only talk if we concealed his identity. he'd been stripped of his uniform, he told us. his hands were tied and they shot him in the head. the pentagon would not comment. there is still some confusion over why this american team had their mission extend and what exactly their assignment was, but either way, it meant they camped out overnight in

before the explosion yesterday. it happened at a campus landmark called davey poplar. the tree is supposedly the spot where a revolutionary war general selected the site for school. one person was taken into custody. there's a new discovery in an ancient pyramid and a deadly shooting at a starbucks. the "chicago tribune" reports one man was killed and two people were hurt in a shooting at a starbucks. police say they think the victim and the shooter were involved in a nearby drug deal, and the victim ran into the starbucks. the gunman followed him and opened fire. another man and a 12-year-old boy were wounded. the suspect got away. the "washington post" reports an employee at twitter on his last day deactivated trump's account. his twitter account was down for 11 minutes last night. visitors saw the message. sorry, that page doesn't exist.

powell to lead the get. powell will replace janet yellen. the first woman to leave the chair. he spent years in the private sector. he's expected to keep raising interest rates at a gradual clip. powell's also seen as someone more inclined to ease financial regulations. his election was no surprise to wall street. investors also mulled over the gop tax plan, weighing its impact to business, particularly in consumer spending. in the end the dow had a record high, gaining 81 points. the s&p 500 ended up where it start. so, too, did the nasdaq. iphone x goes on sale today. they lined up around the world to get their hands on the new device. apple says it will be available in 50 markets including u.s., china, india, and japan. it features new facial recognition technology. the starting price, nearly $1,000. an airline trade group says this will be the busiest

court documents appear to indicate otherwise. authorities in los angeles and new york have opened new investigations into harvey weinstein. jericka duncan has new details about new rape allegations against the hollywood mogul. >> reporter: actress paz day la huerta says harvey weinstein offered to give her a ride home because the two live in the same neighborhood. she said weinstein insisted the two have drinks. that's when she says weinstein took off her dress and forced himself on her. she said weinstein kept calling her. on december 23rd of the same year, weinstein showed up in the lobby of her apartment, they went upstairs, and day la hur ta says he raped her a second time. she's been in numerous shows and
