officers now catching up with reckless drivers who have been terrorizing neighborhoods for weeks. good evening and thanks for joining us tonight the special edition of kpix 5 news. police have just arrested a suspected sideshow writer in san jose. they say he had an officer with his car last weekend and then took off. devon sealy has more.>> reporter: it was a scene like this one, and illegal sideshow that police are trying to put the brakes on. one of their officers was hit by a car, allegedly driven by this man. he sped away from police near hostetler road. >> they come out with their little hot cars and zoom around but the police are never around. >> julie marquez said the sideshow street racing has long been a problem. in her neighborhood in northeast so that stanhope they, -- san jose, she is glad they are taking action. >> it just takes one time to

kill somebody. that can happen. >> they said cabrera managed to escape last sunday night. investigators used a partial license plate number to identify him. he arrested -- was arrested friday. all told, police said they arrested four people for reckless driving, issued two tickets and towed five cars. neighbors said they feel safer knowing police are cracking down on the reckless drivers.>> there is a lot of people involved, they are taking a late night walk or walking their dog. it makes the neighborhood a lot more safer.>> the injured officer was treated at the hospital for non-life- threatening injuries. he is expected to make a full recovery. a shootout that left a san francisco police officer fighting for his life. police have identified and chart the suspect. 32-year-old cesar valdes of hayward is facing a slew of charges including attempted

murder, felony and possession of a firearm, and driving a stolen vehicle. they both ended up in the hospital after exchanging gunfire wednesday morning. officers were checking out a report of a suspicious vehicle near 18th and diamond when the gunfire erupted. both men are in the hospital tonight. the 41-year-old officer is listed in critical but stable condition. valdes is in worse shape with life-threatening injuries. after years of debate, san francisco police will be getting tasers. the police commission gave the go-ahead after a heated meeting last night. there is still plenty of disagreement on the issue.>> reporter: san francisco police can start to carry tasers as early as next to december. that is after the police commission voted last night 4-3 to give officers the new tool. san francisco is one of the very last major u.s. cities
