health issue but denies the u.s. has a gun problem. and heavy rain, tornados, and golf-ball-size hail slams the midwest, leaving widespread destruction. good morning from the 57 studio newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie frein. at least 26 people were killed in texas. sunday morning a gunman opened fire at a small rural church in sutherland springs. that's about 30 miles southeast of san antonio. besides 26 killed another 20 were wounded. the dead range in age from 5 to 72 including the pastor's daughter and a pregnant woman. the suspected gunman has been identified as dev kelley. he used a military-style assault rifle. kelley was found in his car dead

moments later. courtney zubowski, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the town is hurting as this small town puts together the pieces after more than two dozen people were killed inside that church. a day after the worst mass shooting in texas history, investigators are still trying to determine a motive. more than two dozen people, including several children, were shot and killed during sunday's services at the first baptist church of sutherland springs. we all in here know what happened today, and it's something we all say does not happen in small communities. but we found out today it does. >> reporter: the victims' ages ranged from 5 to 72 years old. >> it was bad. i mean i tried to -- i tried to help as many people as i could, you know. it -- you just can't explain it. your mind doesn't want to grasp it, you know, the shock of it.

>> reporter: the suspect has been identified as devin kelley, a 26-year-old air force veteran who was discharged a year ago. he entered the church and proceeded to shoot most if not all people inside. >> as he exited the church, a suspect dropped his rifle and fled. a local resident grabbed his rifle. >> reporter: he drove off the road. when police arrived, the man was dead. sutherland springs is a rural community about 35 miles east of san antonio. on sunday a local resident described it as the kind of place where everybody knows everybody, including people who were killed. devin kelley served in the air force from 2010 to 2014. he was disciplined for assault on his wife and a child. aet this point, anne-marie, investigators are not releasing a motive.

>> courtney zubowski in sutherland springs, texas. thank you so much, courtney. the man who confronted the gunman had help from another man who was driving by. johnnie langendorff said they chased him as he got away. >> the shooter got in the truck. the guy with the rifle came to my truck as the shooter took off and he briefed me quickly on what had just happened and he said we have to get him, and so that's what i did. >> he said the gunman eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed. >> he hit the ditch. the gentleman that was with me got out, rested his rifle on my hood, and kept it aimed at him, telling him to get out, get out. there was no movement. there was none of that. >> they stayed at the scene until the police arrived five minutes later and langendorff said he just did the right thing. ahead on "cbs this morning"

we'll talk with governor greg abbott about the shooting, the suspect, and how the small town of sutherland springs is coping. president trump called the act evil and the gunman deranged. mr. trump is in japan this morning, his second day there, part of a 12-day asia swing. north korea and trade is dominating the agenda. mr. trump says it's time to redo the trade agreement between japan and the u.s. >> this is a mental health problem at the highest level. >> reporter: at a joint press conference with japan's prime minister, president trump insisted sunday's mass shooting in texas does not warrant new gun controls. >> this isn't a guns situation. i mean we could go into it, but it's a little bit soon to go into it. but fortunately somebody else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction, otherwise, it would have been as bad as it was.

>> reporter: last year the trade deficit reached nearly $70 billion. the president accused his hosts of being unfair trading partners. >> japan has been winning, you do know that. >> reporter: he called out the executives of japanese auto maiks makers sitting right in front of him. >> try building them in the u.s. is that possible to ask? that's not rude. is that rude? i don't think so. >> reporter: when asked about north korea, he hoped for a peaceful solution. he urged japan to take additional steps to protect itself. >> the prime minister of japan is going to be purchasing massive amounts of military equipment, as he should. >> reporter: the president wraps up his visit in japan tonight. he heads to south korea tomorrow. steven portnoy, cbs news, traveling with the president in tokyo. today another round of severe weather is expected in the ohio valley on the heels of yesterday's storms that produced at least nine tornadoes.

tornados were spotted in illinois, ohio, and indiana. about 170,000 customers lost power. some of the worst destruction was in central indiana where there was damage in several counties. dozens of homes and other buildings were badly damaged including a pig farm. >> my husband and i were checking the pigs when the tornado hit and we were actually in the barn and we made it through, thank god. >> all you could see was debris flying in the air. you couldn't see maybe ten feet away from you. it was chaos. >> at least eight people were injured by the tornado in celina, ohio, near the indiana border. schools are closed today. just leaked documents indicate wilbur ross owned par of company that's also owned by russian president vladimir putin's son-in-law. according to the records obtained by the international a

consortium, ross is an investor in navigation holdings, a large shipping firm. a spokesman said ross never met putin's son-in-law and has withdrawn from matters relating to transoceanic shipping. paul manafort is expected to appear at a bail hearing today. he and his associate richard gates pleaded not guilty last week to an indictment. debate is scheduled to begin today on the republican tax overhaul. speaker paul ryan says it's possible that a repeal to the affordable care act's insurance mandate could be repealed. >> this is what we said we would do when we ran for office in 2016. we have to have tax reform, we have to have tax cuts for people in the middle. this delivers that, and we

miami, and senator rand paul is recovering from serious injuries. those are some of the headlines on the "morning news" land. the lexington herald leader says senator rand paul suffered broken ribs when he was assaulted. he was mowing his lawn in bowling green when his next-door neighbor tackled him. he also had cuts on his nose and mouth. a retired physician rene boucher was arrested. the "chicago tribune" announces a plan on basic bleeding techniques. the stop-the-bleed campaign teaches citizens basic techniques to control bleeding. more than 3,000 people have been shot this year in chicago. bystanders are usually on the scene of the shooting before first responders. "the miami herald" said a man crawled through a baggage carousel and sneaked onto the tarmac at miami international

shakeup in the ruling family. dozens of senior officials and princes are under arrest overseen by prince mohamed bin salman. dozens have been arrested. their arrests are said to be part of an anti-corruption sweep, but many of those arrested are potential rivals or critics of the p in the past the rulers have kept their disagreements private. amazon is discounting products from third-party sellers on its websites. it includes board games and technology gadgets offered by other merchants. amazon has been trying to lure customers away from discount places like walmart. the iphone 10 sold out in 20 cities over the weekend. the smartphone which sells for $999 went on sale and began selling out by saturday afternoon. for online orders, delivery time is three to four weeks. that's according to apple. and "thor: ragnarok" muscled its way to one of the best box office debuts of the year.

our top storiys this mornin. the man who walked into a texas church and opened fire was a veteran. at least 26 people were kill and 20 others wounded and courtney zubowski is standing by in sutherland springs. courtney, good morning again. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. local, state, and federal officials have been out at the church since the shooting yesterday morning. what we know right now is that 26 people were killed, 20 others injured. the suspect is dead, and what they're telling us is that before the shooting, people spotted the suspect across the street at a gas station dressed

in all black wearing tactical gear and a protective vest. he then walked into the church, started shooting before he went into the church, and then, they say, he shot nearly every person inside the church, a church where 50 people went to pray and many didn't make it out alive. >> well, we went running outside when we heard the shots, and then we looked at each other and said, i'm not going to be outside for bullets to fly because we heard ricochet. >> reporter: devin kelley was found in his car dead just a few miles from the church. they're telling us that a private citizen with a rifle went after him. at this point investigators don't know if that private citizen was the one who killed him or if the suspect shot himself. anne-marie? >> courtney, i know you mentioned people saw him in tactical gear before. did anybody else see anything
