stage as president trump arrives in south korea for nuclear talks. the 20th anniversary of "the lion king" came with a surprise performance that brought the audience to their feet. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, it appears a domestic dispute led to a massacre at a texas church that left at least 26 people dead. the gunman, devin kelley, had a history of do nestic violence and left threatening messages for his mother-in-law. she occasionally attended service at the first baptist church, but was not there friday. he called his father and said he was shot and did not expect to survive. the air force failed to tell the fbi about his history, something that would have prevented him

from buying a gun. courtney is in sutherland springs this morning. courtney, good morning. >> reporter: the air force is looking into how to prevent a mistake like this from happening again. meanwhile, some of the survivors fighting for their lives, others are preparing to say good-bye to their loved ones. residents held a vigil overnight in memory of those killed during sunday's massacre inside a church. now, a mistake allowed a shooter to buy guns legally, no questions asked. the background check came up clean. >> there was no information that said he could not purchase that firearm. >> reporter: that should not have been the case. while serving in the air force, he was convicted on two charges of domestic assault. the air force is investigating why his conviction wasn't put in a national data base.

that information would have popped up on a background check and prevented him from buying weapons. >> more than 15 magazines, 30-round capacity magazines have been recovered. >> reporter: he fired 450 rounds before a neighbor, who heard the gunshots grabbed his own gun and ran barefoot to the church. that neighbor was stephen willeford. >> i knew that represented a live. i was scared to death. >> reporter: he shot the gunman twice, once in the leg then the torso. the gunman then fled in a car, crashed and was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. it was not motivated by race or religion, but some sort of domestic dispute. police say the gunman had some sort of falling out with his family. he recently sent threatening

text messages to his mother-in-law. >> thank you so much. domestic violence ended his military career. he was discharged for assaulting his previous wife and her child. less than two months ago, he started a job as an unarmed security guard at a resort not far from the church. saturday, he said he had a headache and left work early. >> no signs of anything. quiet, polite man. we thought he didn't show up for work on sunday. then, about 5:30, my maintenance manager said have you not been watching the news? i turned it on and found out about him. >> he lived in a home registered to his parents 40 miles north of san antonio. law enforcement say he shot two people outside the church, walked inside and fired the assault rifle walking down the center aisle. he continued firing on the way out the building. jeff talked to terry smith, who

witnessed the attack. >> shot the gentleman standing right underneath that sign. he was shooting at the building. he was just shooting. you could see him shooting. he went around and then we couldn't see him, but we could hear the shots. we saw him come around. he went all around and back to that area. he got real quiet, again. then we heard a lot of rounds. a lot. >> officials said once kelly entered the church, there was no way for the people inside to escape. devin kelly's victims include the young, the old and pregnant woman. michelle miller reports, one family suffered unimaginable loss. >> reporter: three generations of the holcombs, eight family members in all, including an unborn baby. >> father, thank you for letting us come to your house --

>> reporter: brian holcomb, seen here leading another service, filling in for the regular pastor, the devoted grandfather, who loved entertaining his familiarry per risched with his high school sweetheart karla. 1-year-old noah was the youngest victim of the bloodshed. brian's other son, john, was worshipping with his wife crystal and five kids. john died but his wife did not. three of their children, emily, megan and greg also lost their lives. earl is a close, family friend. >> hard to stop and think about it. the magnitude of the loss of some people is just unfathomable. >> reporter: the church's pastor lost his 14-year-old daughter, annabelle. >> we have had a long night with our children and grandbabies we

have left. >> reporter: the ward family lost some of their youngest. 5-year-old brooke and 7-year-old emily garza along with their mother, joeann. the gunman's bullet shot the glasses off her face. her brother ryland was struck four times and is now out of surgery. retired air force serviceman, robert, died alongside his wife. they leave behind two sons, both of whom are on active duty. michelle miller, cbs news, sutherland springs, texas. overseas, president trump arrived in south korea this morning, the start of a two-day visit. the president met with south korean president moon jae-in. moon hoped trump's visit would be a turning point to diffuse tensions with north korea. margaret brennan asked mr. trump if he sees progress on that front.

>> president trump, you spoke here in south korea saying you believe the crisis with north korea will be worked out. specifically, have you seen any success in your diplomatic strategy so far and do you believe direct talks are a waste of time? >> well, i think you know me well enough, i don't like talking about whether i see success or not in a case such as this. we like to play our cards a little close to the vest. i will say this, i believe it makes sense for north korea to do the right thing. not only for north korea, but humanity all over the world. there is a lot of reason, a lot of good reason behind it. with that, yes, i think we are making a lot of progress. i think we are showing great strength. i think they understand we have unparallel strength. there has never been strength like it. we sent three of the largest aircraft carriers in the world

and they are well positioned. we have a nuclear submarine positioned. we have many things happening that we hope, we hope, in fact i'll go a step further, we hope to god we never have to use. that said, i really believe it makes sense for north korea to come to the table and to make a deal that's good for the people of north korea and the people of the world. i do see certain movement, yes. let's see what happens. >> trade will also dominate their talks. mr. trump announced south korea will buy u.s. military equipment. president trump ate with u.s. troops at a military base south of seoul. a former policy adviser to president trump's campaign said he had contact with a high level russian official.

carter page left the campaign before mr. trump was elected. he testified last week, the transcript was released yesterday. he briefly said hello to the deputy prime minister. he offered contradictory accounts of who he met in russia. he asked if the trip was okay and told the campaign of the deputy prime minister's strong support for mr. trump. the neighbor who attacked senator rand paul at his kentucky home could face serious charges. the anesthesiologist attacked him on friday, breaking five ribs. an attorney said it involved a dispute most find trivial. he is charged with a misdemeanor, but may be a felony charge. coming up on the morning news, greek tragedy. florida state university suspends fraternities and sororities after the death of a pledge. full circle, elton john surprises fans at "the lion king." this is the "cbs morning news." fans at "the lion

♪ quite the surprise for the broadway audience of "the lion king" on sunday here in new york city. elton john performed his song "circle of life." he was joined by the cast. he co-wrote the music for the disney movie. the broadway show marks the 20th anniversary and is the highest grossing stage show in history. a kevin spacey movie was pulled from a film festival and the party is over for greek live at florida state. the tallahassee democrat reports the president of florida state university, john thrasher suspended all fraternities and sororities on campus. it comes after a fraternity pledge died on friday. he was found unresponsive after a party. yesterday, another fraternity

member was charged with selling and trafficking cocaine. "the new york times" says two city police officers facing rape charges quit the police force. they are charged with raping an 18-year-old woman in september after a drug stop. the resignation comes three days before a police administrative hearing that could have resulted in their firing. sent the price of oil to a two-year high. saudi arabia is the largest exporter of oil. the price of u.s. crude jumped more than 3%. here on wall street, u.s. stocks made gains. the dow rose nine and s&p 500 at three and the nasdaq 22 points higher. chip maker, broadcom to buy competitor qualcomm for $103 billion in an unsolicited bid. they are at the heart of mobile phone hardware. qualcomm will review the proposal. it would be the largest technology acquisition ever. the deal could draw regulatory scrutiny. age cysts believe the san diego company declined and rejected the bid as too low. cvs will offer next day delivery for prescription drugs nationwide. it is set to begin in 2018. they are making the move because it is expected amazon will soon get into the prescription drug business. >> thank you. still ahead, tragedy in a

here is a look at today's forecast in cities around the country. the residents of sutherland springs, texas are making plans to bury their loved ones, their neighbors and their friends. this is a tiny town. the 26 victims of sunday's church massacre represent 4% of the town's population. we have more. >> reporter: roughly 600 people live in sutherland springs, a texas small town with a broken heart. there's a post office, but no school, no police department, no

reason for outsiders to notice this one blinking light town, until now. >> very closeknit. very loving. our lives are like this, interweaved. >> everyone knows everyone? >> everyone knows everyone. when one hurts, we all hurt. >> reporter: 88-year-old beulah wilson is the retired postmaster here. her family moved from san antonio to sutherland springs in 1954 to feel safe. >> i have friends that are dead. i don't know which ones are. >> reporter: sounds crazy to say. >> it's numbing. you are just numb. >> reporter: first baptist church often responded to people who found trouble. on sunday, trouble found the church. the on again/off again spiritual home for the wilson family for 63 years. how important is the church for sutherland springs? >> i'd say it's an anchor.

our top stories this morning, president trump began a two-day visit to south korea. he met with south korean president moon jae-in. moon hopes the visit will serve as a turning nount efforts to resolve north korea's nuclear issue. president trump says he sees progress on that front. officials say devin kelly, who killed 26 people at a texas church had a history of domestic violence. he sent threatening messages to his mother-in-law who occasionally attended the church. the air force admitted it failed to alert the fbi about kelley's criminal history, something that would have presented him from buying a gun.

the church shooting comes not long after the las vegas massacre that also took dozens of lives. jim axelrod looks at what happens when the unthinkable seems to happen every day. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: whether it was unbelievable five weeks ago in las vegas -- >> totally unreal to me. >> reporter: -- or unreal in newtown, americans need new language for mass shootings. sadly, their frequency makes them all too unbelievable. since the pulse nightclub shootings in orlando, there have been 555 mass shootings. four or more shot at once. 689 people have been killed, nearly 2700 wounded. [ sirens ] >> got shots fired. automatic firearm. >> reporter: two of the five deadliest shootings in modern american history have taken place in the last 35 days.

they are all competing for space in our collective consciousness and getting crowded out. take the shooting this man is accused of at a walmart in colorado. three dead five days ago, chances are, you haven't heard about it. frank is a professor of psychiatry at michigan state university. what happens in a culture, more than 50 dead and 500 injured is suddenly yesterday's news? >> i think we live -- emotion often drives thought. too much exposure to the same kind of violence reduces that emotional response. >> unreal. >> reporter: yes, we can forget unreal and unbelievable. maybe the word we are looking for to describe the reaction to all the mass shootings is numb. jim axelrod, cbs news, new york.
