that lord of the rings fans are ready for more hobbits. good morning from the studio 57 news room at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie greene. donald trump jr., the president's oldest son released a series of twitter messages he exchanged with wikileaks during and after the 2016 election. the exchanges took place at the same time wiki leaks was releasing messages. the messages had already been released to three committees investigating russian intervention in the 2016 election. >> good morning. the messages mainly consisted of wiki leaks offering advice to trump jr. also praising donald trump's comments about the website. >> in a series of screen shots

donald trump jr. released hiss conversations with wiki leaks during the campaign writing in part how ironic that one of the congressional committees has chosen to selectively leak the messages. in one of the messages from october 2016 don jr. was asked by the hacking site to publicize its leaks in the hillary campaign. in one instance they suggested that if mr. trump were to lose he should not concede and instead claim the election was rigged. cbs news has confirmed that investigators are in possession of the messages and that wiki leaks published them. >> the president's son would be in direct communication with the vehicle that was used by russia in order to seek to influence our election is a really

striking development. requently praised tion candidate the website for releasing damaging e-mails and information about his opponent hillary clinton. in october of last year vice president mike pence was asked about the trump campaign's connections to the hacking site. >> some suggested on the left all this bad stuff about hillary, nothing bad about trump, that your campaign is in cahoots with wikileaks. >> nothing could be further from the truth. >> an attorney released the statement saying quote, over the last several months we have worked cooperatively with each of the committees and have voluntarily turned over thousands of documents. we can say that we have no concerns about these documents and any questions raised about them have been easily answered in the appropriate forum. >> a spokes person for the vice president said he was never aware of anyone associated with the campaign being in contact with wikileaks. he said he first learned about this news from yesterday's report.

>> thanks a lot. jeff sessions is scheduled to testify before the house judiciary committee today and is likely to be asked about previous statements concerning contacts between the trump campaign and russia. and sessions is considering appointing a second special counsel, this one to look into hillary clinton foundation dealings. and a uranium deal struck during the obama presidency. sessions has directed federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues. a russian backed company purchased uranium mines back in 2010 and that's when hillary clinton was secretary of state. some of the investors donated large sum to the clinton foundation. roy moore, the republican candidate for the u.s. senate seat in alabama says that he doesn't know the latest woman to accuse him of sexually assaulting her. she claims he assaulted her when she was a teenager. senior republicans want moore to step down, but he's refusing. >> this is absolutely false.

>> a defiant roy moore held a press conference monday evening addressing the latest claim of sexual misconduct against him. >> i never did what she said i did. i don't even know the woman. >> reporter: earlier in the day beverly nelson described how he assaulted her decades ago when she was just 16. >> mr. moore reached over and began groping me. and putting his hand on my breast. >> nelson says the attack occurred after the then district attorney offered to drive her home from the restaurant where she worked. she says the regular customer left this note behind in her high school yearbook calling her a sweet girl. >> this is a political maneuver and has nothing to do with reality. >> moore has called the allegations against him a witch hunt but more republicans are calling on him to step aside. senate majority whip john cornyn

addressed whether they should vote to expel him if he wins. >> i think that's way down the road. even before the latest accuser came forward mitch mcconnell said he had heard enough. senator mcconnell said the party is exploring whether another republican could mount a successful write-in campaign should moore win the race. president trump is on his way home from asia. protesters took to the streets. mr. trump was there to attend a summit on regional security but he skipped it when it was delayed. trade also dominated his trip. this morning mr. trump tweeted, just arrived in the philippines for my final stop with world leaders. will lead to fair trade deals unlike the horror show from past administrations. the president also tweeted that he'd be making a major statement when he returned to washington. when he gets home the president

will turn his attention to tax reform. he's scheduled a thursday meeting with house gop members before they vote on a tax overhaul plan. mr. trump has his own ideas calling for a steeper tax break for wealthier americans. the death toll from the powerful earthquake that hit the border between iran and iraq now stands at more than 430. sunday's quake struck as people were going to bed. another 7,000 were injured. rescue workers are digging through what's left of collapsed buildings. the power is off in the region. water lines are cut and there are no communications. the worst damage appears to be in a kurdish town in western iran. and new evidence in the death of a frat member. surveillance video left to new charges in the death of timothy

powerful powerful winds in the seattle area yesterday toppled trees leaving one dead and several people hurt. wind gusts topped 60 miles per hour, a tree fell on a car in a seattle suburb killing a woman and critically injuring her sister. almost 200,000 customers lost power. ucla basketball players being detained in china are getting help from the president and new clues in the death of a green beret. those are some of the head lines on the newsstand. two navy seals already under investigation in the straggling death of a green beret are also under scrutiny in an alleged theft. investigators say army staff sergeant was strangled to death in june in mali after an argument with the two seals. the seals are reportedly now being investigated for taking money from a fund used to pay confidential informants.

sources say the sergeant discovered the theft and threatened to report the navy seals. >> the los angeles times reports president trump asked chinese president to help resolve the shoplifting case against three ucla basketball players. the players are being held in their hotel in china for shoplifting designer sunglasses. mr. trump reportedly made the request while in beijing last week. and sports illustrated reports on cleveland cavaliers superstar lebron james taking the new york city subway with his teammates yesterday to avoid traffic. >> 45 minute bus ride or six minute train ride so we decided to hop on the train with the squad. >> the team was heading back to their hotel after a morning shoot around at madison square garden. a passenger who later said he didn't know who he was sitting next to got a little annoyed when the cameras were turned on him. still ahead, new hobbit adventures, the lord of the rings heads to the small screen with a major deal with amazon prime.

>> good morning. well, shares of general electric took a nose dive yesterday falling about 7% after ge cut its dividend in half. the dow released the forecast to three sectors. aviation, health and energy. its quarterly dividend is being cut to 12% saving. ge estimated $4 billion a year. shares are down 38% sitting at five-year lows. the ge pulled the entire lower sector. in the end, the dow gains 17 points. the nasdaq rose six points yesterday. prominent venture capitalist is taking a leave. allegations of misconduct. he was one of elon musk's early investors. he also resigned from his firm and denies reports of sexual harassment allegations. the firm opened investigations

into the charges last month. amazon is making a series out of lord of the rings. the series will be a prequel to the trilogy. it leaves the door open for a possible spinoff. it's estimated amazon acquires it for as much as $250 million. now, this seems like a joining of strange bedfellows. walmart is devoting a section of its website to lord taylor. the initiative will start next spring. it hopes to attract new customer who is are already buying higher end products on walmart.com. this is the latest push to compete with amazon and barbie is adding a new doll to its lineup to honor women who break boundaries. the new barbie will be modelled at the first american to compete at the olympics while wearing a hood.

our top stories this morning. donald trump jr. released a series of private twitter exchanges between himself and wikileaks during and after the 2016 presidential campaign. the documents show trump jr. responded three times. he agreed to ask around about a political action committee that wikileaks had mentioned. and the republican nominee for the u.s. senate in alabama roy moore says the latest accusation against him of sexual misconduct is absolutely false. beverly young nelson claims that moore sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager decades ago. she's the fifth woman to accuse him of sexual misconduct. moore says he doesn't know her and calls the charges a political maneuver. the united states and south korea wrap up joint military

drills today off south korea. the show of strength is aimed at north korea. >> reporter: these fighter jets from the uss ronald reagan could strike targets in north korea in a matter of minutes. three u.s. aircraft carrier strike groups the reagan, the theodore roosevelt and the nimitz. they're involved in these massive military exercises just off the korean peninsula. it's the largest display of strength in a decade. >> they could launch a fighter jet off this carrier once every 20 seconds but of course then they have to get all those fighter jets back on board. this is how they do it. >> all of this together, the whole u.s. military sends the message that we're ready to defend ourselves. >> mark dalton commands one of
