good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. charles mansomanson, the cu leader who sent his followers to carry out a string of notorious murders died last night of natural causes at the age of 83. manson spent half a century behind bars after a conviction of the murder of sharon tate and six others. john blackstone has our report. >> reporter: in his recent prison mugshot, charles manson looks every bit the crazed cult killer. charlie rose interviewed him in 1986. >> what's the difference between you and me then. >> you don't know how to survive. you're weak. you have emotions. you change your mind, you chase your tail. >> reporter: he seemed to be able to cast a spell over his followers, mostly young women who became known as the manson family.

>> what don't we understand about you? >> just what i said. i'm inside of you, man. >> yeah. >> i'm inside of you. i'm inside every one of you. >> reporter: in 1969 manson's followers committed seven savage murders in california. >> i did not kill anybody, man. >> reporter: the most significant murder was that of sharon tate, the wife of roman polanski. he designed the murder scene to reporters. >> you saw blood all over the place, baby clothes. >> was the murder okay because you didn't see it? >> no. there was no murder. >> there was a murder of sharon tate. >> reporter: he convinced his followers to kill as part of a plan for an apocalyptic murder. >> how you do feel about them?

how you do feel about them? that's what counts. it happened in your world, not mine. >> reporter: in 1971 he was convicted of murder and commuted to death. in 1972 the california supreme court declared the death penalty unconstitutional. john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. an aide to president trump says he's not cam paping for the republican candidate in alabama, roy moore, because of discomfort with allegations of sexual misconduct. now a newspaper chain in the state is calling for changes. he in doba has more. good morning, henna. >> good morning. support continues to build for and against the alabama senate. he's accused by several women. while some say they do stand behind him, the newspapers are suggesting they side with the democratic opponent. the list is growing of those who one way or another are trying to prevent embattled alabama republican roy moore from winning the state's special senate election. three major alabama newspapers

ran front page endorsements yesterday of moore's opponent democrat doug jones. the alabama media group which owns the three papers wrote the allegations against moore, quote, illustrate a pattern of a man ins he 30s courting and preying on young women and girls. moore is accused of making unwanted sexual advances to women, many of whom were in their teens while moore was in his 30s. tina johnson said she had a run-in with moore in the '90s when she was in the office. >> i got up to leave and he grabbed me from behind by the buttocks. >> reporter: they hit both sides of the aisle urging moore to drop out of the race. >> you've seen people across the board, ted cruz, mike lee withdraw their support, say he should step aside. i still hope he will do that and to the right thing. >> reporter: moore maintains his innocence. outside his church yesterday, members of the community said moore still has their support. >> you hear all this stuff about him. it's amazing.

we live in the community. we don't hear none of it. >> reporter: the special election takes place december 12th. >> president trump himself remains concerned. the president himself has yet to publicly weigh in on the race. >> thank you so much, hena. this morning a manhunt is under way for the deadly shooting of a police officer. 25-year-old brian shaw was a member of the new kensington police force. that's located about 18 miles northeast of pittsburgh. shaw was shot in the chest while chasing the suspect identified by police as rahmael sal holt. shaw was shot in the chest while chasing the suspect identified by the police. shaw was shot friday evening. police say holt ran after a traffic stop and shots followed. it's unclear what caused officer martinez's injuries. his partner is in serious condition. the so-called big band region where officers patrol is

pretty difficult for people to cross the border illegally because of the terrain. president trump tweeted last night, we will seek out and bring justice to those responsible. we will and must build the wall. cbs news has confirmed that special counsel robert mueller has asked the department of justice to turn over documents related to the firing of former fbi director james comey. mueller also wants documents concerning jeff sessions recusing himself from the russian investigation. and now to the republican effort to overhaul the tax code. budget director mick mulvaney said it would be okay to take out the individual mandate in obamacare. the president had called on lawmakers to make that part of the tax package, but it has become a major sticking point. >> what we're interested in is the best tax bill that can pass.

if a good tax bill can pass without the obama repeal mandate as part of it, great. if it needs to come out in order for that good tax bill to pass, we can live with that as well. >> the house has passed its version of the tax bill. the senate is expected to start debate following the thanksgiving break. there are new allegations of sexual misconduct by show business personalities. a model accused hip-hop mogul russell simmons of coercing her to perform a sex act in 1991 when show was 17 years old. he denies the allegations and says whatever happened was consensual. she also said brett ratner was present. "the new york times" says there are four others. an attorney for ratner denied it. and two women who work on the series "transparent" accused

jeffrey tambor of sexual misconduct. he said it's not true, but he doesn't see how he can return to the series. allegations against dr. ricardo cruciani goes back over a dozen years. he's scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. argentina's navy now says it's not sure if the brief satellite calls it received over the weekend are from the missing submarine. the navy lost contact with the sub wednesday morning 17 miles off argentina's southern atlantic coast. there are 42 members o on the diesel/electric powered sub that was on a mission. it was on a routine training mission. zimbabwe's longtime ruler mugabe has refused to set down.

under high winds. nascar fans say farewell to dale earnhardt jr. and japan faces a drinking ban. the japan times reports u.s. servicemembers on the japanese island's base at okinawa are restricted from drinking alcohol. a police say the marine's blood alcohol level was three times over the legal elementary. u.s. servicemembers from elsewhere are prohibited from buying or drinking alcohol off base. the "washington post" reports they're calling for more aid at aionty march yesterday in puerto rico. the protesters demanded more money to build the island's infrastructure in the aftermath of hurricane maria. they urged them to forgive them of their death. president trump tweeted they should have left the basketball players in china. it came after ball, the father of one of the players minimized president trump's efforts to getting them released. "rolling stone" reports on the death of country mao star mel tillis. he died yesterday following a lengthy illness. he wrote hits for kenny rogers and ricky skaggs. he overcame a stutter to sing on dozens of his own songs. he had more than 30 top ten country singles. mel tillis was 85. and the "miami herald" looks at the final race of nascar legend dale earnhardt jr. >> we hope they enjoyed it and they got to see a great race. it's time for somebody else to get in this car. >> after 18 seasons on the nascar circuit, earnhardt is retiring. thousands of fans greeted the 43-year-old driver yesterday at a racetrack in homestead, florida. he finished 25th in his last

thanksgiving week is pretty quiet. they'll be watching regarding interest rates. analysts do expect a rate increase next month. for the week the dow lost 63 points. the s&p 500 lost 3 points lower. again, that's on a weekly basis. nebraska regulators vote today on expansion of the keystone xl pipeline in their state. the proposed xl route would pass through montana, south dakota, and most of nebraska. the project was rejected by president obama and revived by president trump. opponents include environmental activists and some land joaners. meantime the latest superhero mashup, "d.c. justice league" topped the box office. >> i'll take it from here. >> do i know you? >> but "justice league's" opening was a disappointment.

our top story this morning, cult leader charles manson died last night following nearly half a century behind bars. he was 83 years old. manson convinced his flowers known as the manson family to brutally kill actress sharon tate and six others back in 1969. and an alabama newspaper chain is calling on voters to recall roy moore's candidacy. and aides to moore say they're not voting for him because of their discomfort over the sexual misconduct allegations. about half of the island of puerto rico remains this the dark nearly two months after hurricane maria. as david begnaud reports,

schoolchildren are getting lessons in perseverance and patience. >> reporter: by daylight these first graders are practicing english at this elementary school in san juan. but no matter what the language, the struggles are easy to see. meals come in ready-to-eat packages or from the one gas stove, but at least this school is open. about 400 of the island's 1,100 public schools are still closed including juan hernandez's school where he's been cleaning up since after the hurricane. >> we're waiting. >> reporter: the contractor who was hired to check if the schools are safe was fired so the national guard is taking over. at another school principal deborah hernandez has a list of hazards. >> there's a leak. there's a leak that's very

important to fix. >> reporter: but six weeks after the storm many of her students have left the island. >> we lost 25 students confirmed. some of them moved to the states. others at private schools. >> reporter: education secretary told us hurricane maria devastated a school system already in trouble, but she refuses to send kids back to unsafe schools. >> some school communities are willing to open their schools even though they have conditions that would not meet a minimum standard in the states. >> it does not meet your bar. >> no. i think some of the conditions are unacceptable. >> for her and a lot of parents, they've been without power for nearly three week bus they're still open. 56 students have gone to florida and enrolled there, and across the island, about 6,400 students have left and are now attending schools on the mainland. david begnaud, cbs news, puerto rico.
