>> this morning's eye opener is presented by toyota, let's go places. >> welcome to cbs this morning, i'm gayle king with norah o'donnell, vladimir dutier. there is happy news from london today. we're getting our first look at the newly engaged couple. prince harry and meghan markle. since their big announcement this morning. prince harry says he's thrilled. guess what, harry, we're thrilled too. congratulations to them. we'll take you to kensington palace in just a moment. >> they look happy together. very nice. but we're going to begin with this. congress is back at work this morning and democrats are facing fallout from sexual harassment claims. the longest serving member of

congress john conyers gave up his role on the house judiciary committee. and senator al franken is talking at length about the accusations from four women. >> the minnesota democrat spoke to wcco. he says he is embarrassed and ashamed. talk radio news anchor leeann tweeden says franken forcibly kissed and groped her during a uso tour in 2006. he apologized for the photo showing him touching her but says he remembers the kissing incident differently. >> three other women says franken globed th groped them wg for photos. here is part of their conversation. >> have you ever placed a hand on some woman's butt? >> you know, i can't say that that hasn't happened. i take thousands and thousands of pictures. we -- sometimes in crowded and chaotic situations. i can't say i haven't done that.

and i'm -- i am very sorry if these women experienced that. and i have to say that i have to be a lot more sensitive and a lot more careful in these -- when i take a picture, when i meet someone, and i'm going to make sure that this does not happen again. >> can you really continue to claim kind of a moral high ground on some of these issues, including the trump/russia investigation, when a lot of people feel you've been less than transparent about these particular allegations? >> well, i think i'm a good questioner. i think that the questions that i'm asking don't go to my credibility, they go to the credibility of the witness. they go to the credibility -- >> but hasn't your credibility been undermined?

>> i, i would say yes, and i have a long way back. i have a long way back to win back the trust of the people of minnesota. i have let people down. i have let people of minnesota down. i let my friends and staff and supporters down. my family down. >> esme murphy is with us now. good morning. >> i know you've known the senator for a long time as a prominent minnesota reporter. how did you judge his apology? >> well, i do think he was -- he is genuinely anguished, there's no question about that. i do think that there is a problem here because he says he still does notincidents, these separate claims from these women. again, i pressed him on that. i think if you grabbed somebody's butt cheeks, as one of the women described it, you're going to remember it. >> did that surprise you he said he doesn't remember? >> that's what he's been saying. i think a lot of people will look at him as somebody -- this is a very smart man and say how could you not remember?

this is a man who really prides himself on a lot of details. he insists he doesn't. >> he says he has a long way to go to regain the trust of minnesota voters and he will work very hard to do that. what are they saying in minnesota about franken? >> you know, gayle, i actually thought about something you said last week in the aftermath of the charlie rose allegations where you said how do you wrap your head around it when somebody you care about does something that's bad? for his supporters, for his supporters, i think that's where they're at right now. there is a group of 65 prominent democratic women who came out yesterday and said they support him. that is a big deal. >> he said he has no intentions to resign, right? >> he has absolutely no intention to resign. >> what about the allegations that he may have touched someone's back during a picture? having been a political reporter, i see many times these politicians, they pose for thousands and thousands of pictures. >> right, there's a difference, there's a difference between having a hand around somebody and grabbing their buttocks and the statements from the three

women who are claiming that are remarkably similar and that is a problem and he acknowledged actually in that interview it's possible he could have done it. >> can he survive this, yes or no? >> i think at this point, especially with 65 democratic women coming forward, 14 staffers are supporting him, 35 people from "saturday night live," women, have signed a letter saying at this point, yes. if other things come out though i think there's a problem. >> right. esme murphy, thank you very much for coming in this morning. >> nice to have you at the table. congressman john conyers stepped aside as the top democrat on the house judiciary committee under intense pressure. nancy cordes is on capitol hill where an ethics investigation of sexual harassment allegations against conyers is under way. >> reporter: nancy pelosi said yesterday there's a refreshing new zero tolerance attitude here on capitol hill but then she declined to come down hard on one of her own members. and that surprised even some

democrats. >> john conyers is an icon in our country. he's done a great deal to protect women. >> reporter: democratic leader nancy pelosi was cautious sunday when asked about allegations against michigan's john conyers. >> do you believe john conyers' accusers? >> i don't know who they are. they have not really come forward. >> you don't know if you believe the accusations? >> that's for the ethics committee to review, but i believe he understands what is at stake here and he will do the right thing. >> reporter: hours later, conyers announced he would be stepping down as the top democrat on the house judiciary committee, though he vehemently denied the allegations. leader pelosi followed with a more forceful statement, saying no matter how great an individual's legacy, it is not a license for harassment. the house ethics committee opened an investigation into a pair of allegations against conyers last week. including revelations that his office paid a former staffer more than $27,000 to settle a

complaint. that staffer said she was fired for refusing conyers' sexual advances. legal documents published by buzz feed news detail multiple allegations by female staff members of unwanted touching and romantic advances. one of his anonymous accusers has released a statement through her lawyer asking to be released from her confidentiality agreement. she says if conyers can speak freely about what did or didn't happen, then she should be able to do the same, vlad. >> nancy cordes, thank you. alabama senate candidate roy moore has a new vote of confidence from president trump. but republican senators still want moore to quit the race over claims he preyed on teenagers and young women. >> it's going to be a distraction for us and our agenda. >> the best thing that roy moore can do for the country is to move on. >> if he wins, we get the baggage of him winning and it becomes a story every day about whether or not you believe the

women or roy moore, should he stay in the senate, should he be expelled. >> the president blasted moore's democratic opponent tweeting, the last thing we need in alabama and the u.s. senate is a schumer/pelosi puppet. doug jones replied that he stands by his record as a u.s. attorney. if he wins, jones would be alabama's first democrat to be elected senator in nearly 25 years. >> this morning, we don't know who's running the consumer financial protection bureau. on friday, president trump named his budget director mick mulvaney to take over from richard cordray. but cordray had announced lee andra english will replace him. she filed a lawsuit to block the president's choice and now a judge may have to break the deadlock. jan crawford is following the politics of this unfolding drama. >> reporter: so mulvaney showed up to work at the cfpb today but english who believes she should be the director, did not appear. maybe that's because the white house says she would have been acting only as mulvaney's

deputy. >> it's a watchdog agency. wall street hates it like the devil hates holy water. >> reporter: democrats are calling foul. for president trump announced he wants his budget director to lead the consumer financial protection bureau. mick mulvaney has been an outspoken critic of the agency. >> it turns up being a joke and that's what the cfpb really has been in a sick, sad kind of way. >> reporter: the cfpb was created in the wake of the '08 financial crisis. first proposed by now senator elizabeth warren when she was a professor at harvard. the idea was to protect consumers with an independent watchdog over financial institutions. >> i think the problem is that the wall street banks really don't like the cfpb and they have about 12 billion reasons not to like it. >> reporter: since 2011, the bureau has provided nearly $12 billion in relief including billions in refunds to consumers harmed by illegal banking

practices. last year, it levied a is00 million fine, $100 million fine against wells fargo for opening millions of credit card and bank accounts possibly without customer knowledge. but some republican critics say among other complaints that regulations have made it harder for americans to get approved for credit. president trump called the cfpb a total disaster. last night after english's lawsuit was filed, republican senator tom cotton who serves on the senate banking committee reportedly called it a rogue unconstitutional agency adding, the president should fire her immediately. late last night in a memo obtained by cbs news, the cfpb's top lawyer agreed with the white house that president trump does have authority to name his own acting director. gayle. >> all right, a lot of us are watching this story, thank you very much, jan. up to 100,000 people are being ordered to evacuate in bali where a massive volcano is on the verge of a major

eruption. it started spewing dark gray ash over the weekend. it stretched about 20,000 feet into the air. the officials raised the alert status to its highest level yet. people within six miles of the volcano were told to leave the area. >> 445 flights were cancelled at bali's international airport as ash filled the sky. around 59,000 travelers were stranded. officials sent 100 buses to the airport and ferry terminals to pick up the stranded passengers. nearly 5 million tourists visited bali last year. the chief weathercaster is here with the volcano's impact. good morning. >> good morning, everybody. the key to what could happen at mt. ugun is key to understanding what's going on underneath. molten rock has been building up. it generates a lot of heat within a confined space which generates a lot of pressure. that pressure has pushed the magna into the main vent of the volcano. an eruption will happen when

that pressure just gets so great that the magna is forced to blow out the top of the volcano. a little over two months ago, the threat level for an eruption was raised. 140,000 people have been evacuated. couple of reasons for that. number one, big increase in earthquakes around the volcano. number two, the pressure has actually gotten so great inside this volcano that the sides are starting to bulge. and so far there have only been steam-based eruptions but this volcano is moving into its most dangerous phase, the magna eruption phase, which is of course lava. the huge threat will be pyroclastic flow. that's a mixture of steam and ash and rock and dust. what makes it so dangerous, it moves a heck of a lot faster than lava. 450 miles an hour down the side of the volcano with temperatures at 1800 degrees and they go for miles. the last eruption stretched eight miles from the crater. you want to talk really big distances, just think about this. the last time it erupted, the

aerosols dropped global temperatures by half a degree. even though we are -- boy, we're 10,000 miles from the volcano, it could still possibly have an impact on us, norah, right here. >> lonnie, great explanation, thank you. britain royals will soon welcome an american to the family. prince harry and actress meghan markle appeared a short time ago after their engagement was announced and they're planning a spring wedding. charlie d'agata is in london with what the prince and his fiance have in common. comm charlie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cause for celebration here at kensington palace and we have reaction from the queen whose people tweeted that she and prince philip are delighted for the couple. and prince charles is thrilled and very happy indeed. they look like any newly engaged couple might, barely containing their excitement. >> harry, when did you know she was the one? >> the very first time we met.

>> reporter: and at first glance at the diamond engagement ring made by the court jewelers to the queen. but while it may be a fairy tale romance, it has a thoroughly modern twist. the royal correspondent. >> it's a wonderful fairy tale, it's someone from a different country, a different back ground, marrying into our royal family. above all, they look so happy together. >> reporter: when harry met meghan, markle was already famous in her own right. a star of the hit drama series "suits." shot to fame in her role as rachel zane. the two met through mutual friends in london and for a time managed to keep their relationship secret. it was here in london harry popped the question earlier this month. they share an interest in charity and promoting worthy causes. shortly before meeting markle in 2016, harry sat down with norah o'donnell at the invictus games in florida. >> do you want to have kids some

day? >> of course, you know, who doesn't. time will tell. and i'm looking forward to the opportunity. >> reporter: it was at this year's invictus games that the couple made their first public appearance. and while here in britain, the support for their relationship has been overwhelming. harry's choice of an independently wealthy divorced famous, not to mention american, star may be a bit of a break from tradition, but then again harry was never the type to let something like that get in the way of a perfect fit. now, getting married doesn't change prince harry's position. he was fifth in line to the throne. he falls back to sixth in line to the throne after kate has her baby in april. gayle. >> it's great news all the way around from london. thank you so much, charlie. it's amazing how excited you can get about people that you don't really even know. you've met him, i've met him. i can't say i know him by any stretch of the imagination, don't know her, but the family tree's changing. she's biracial. she's divorced. a lot of people excited about

traffic alert remains in effect for drivers eastbound 92 with all lanes currently shut down at hesperian and diverted off due to an earlier crash that happened just before 3:00 a.m. involving a big rig that spilled oil on the roadway. they hope to have all lanes reopened by 9:00 a.m. delays eastbound and westbound is a slow ride, 34 minutes to 101 and a crash in the north bay is blocking the lanes with a 45 minute ride through 580. now, things are winding down with hi-def doppler showing a lot of clearing and there is more sunshine but areas of rain just east of san jose and half moon bay got rain coming through. loss altos has temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s and look at those rain totals, 2.5 inches.

♪ ♪ jk bawelcome back to "cbs t morning." the republican tax plan is front and center. senator john thune says the tax bill will go to the senate for this week and be open to amendments. thune says we have members who are expressing whether legitimate concerns will have ideas about how to make the bill stronger and better. gop senator ron johnson already has come out against the bill. republicans can only afford to lose just two votes in the senate where democrats are united in opposing the overhaul. pope francis arrived overnight in burma, known as myanmar. he's the first pope to visit the southeast asian nation. there is intense scrutiny of how the pope addresses the rohingya

muslim refugee crisis. advisers warned him against saying the word rohingya over concerns it would set off a diplomatic incident. he will visit bangladesh, where there are 625,000 rohingya refugees have fled. the tobacco industry is being forced to advertise on primetime tv about the deadly and addictive effects of smoking. the court ordered commercials began yesterday after more than a decade of delay. a federal judge said the tobacco industry lied, misrepresented and deceived the american public about the impact of smoking for more than 50 years. some local spas in a popular massage chain are facing allegations of sexual assault. they have mishandled those claims. an investigation by buzzfeed news found more than 180 women accused therapists at massage envy of groping and other sexual acts. meg oliver has the story of one victim. meg, good morning. >> good morning.

massage envy tells us their therapists have done 125 million massages over the past 15 years. still, it says even one incident is too many. buzzfeed reports there have been multiple complaints which customers claim the company mishandled. >> i was really in a state of shock, disbelief, fear. >> reporter: susan says her masseur turned into a sexual predator during her seventh visit with him at this massage envy location in 2015. she says it started when james began rubbing his groin against her. >> he lifted up my body, groped both my breasts roughly and aggressively, put his hands down to the lower part of my body. >> reporter: too disturbed to report it immediately, she called the manager after she got home. >> she said in a very apparently scripted response, we invite you in to talk about your services. i said, no, no, you don't understand. >> reporter: according to buzzfeed news, ingraham is just

one of more than 180 women who have filed sexual assault lawsuits. police reports and state board complaints against massage envy spas, their employees, and the national company. over 100 reported that massage therapists groped their genitals, groped their breasts, or committed other explicit violations. buzzfeed news investigative reporter katie baker. what stood out to you the most in your reporting? >> i think that the descriptions of the sexual assault claims that i heard were really horrific, but to me it is awful to be assaulted when you're in a very vulnerable position. but i think that for some women it is even worse to go and report what happened to you and not have it taken seriously. >> reporter: according to buzzfeed, massage envy only requires franchises to conduct internal investigations of abuse claims. except in the few states that required notification of local law enforcement. >> i just found out these massage envy spa employees were not equipped to handle serious

allegations of sexual assault on their own. >> reporter: massage envy has more than 1100 locations, serving more than 1.5 million members. in a statement, it says we are constantly listening, learning and looking at how we can do more, including how we support franchise locations with best practices in handling these incidents and supporting their clients. >> should be something that they train for, and have an understanding of how to respond. >> reporter: after ingraham filed a formal police report, deter pleaded guilty to sexually molesting nine female clients and is behind bars. citing court records, buzzfeed says two of those women tried to warn the spa before ingraham had. >> massage envy needs to stop, needs to protect, needs to apologize, and to do the right thing. >> ingraham is suing massage

envy and taking other steps to make sure spa companies do the right thing. she helped draft federal legislation that would require massage spas to report sexual assault allegations to police. we reached out to the franchise, but they declined to comment. and katie said after her story broke, several more women have already come forward. >> that's how it goes. so disturbing because it is not just one massage envy story, different franchises around the country. >> they're all independently owned. what she found is that a lot of these franchises didn't take the report seriously because the women waited to call over the phone. they didn't do it in person. >> very disturbing. >> thanks. this could be a record-breaking day for online shopping in the u.s. tony dokoupil takes unsi s insi amazon fulfillment center. >> you're shopping here at one of the company's 25 fulfillment centers.

tony dokoupil is in robinsville, new jersey, with how the retail giant is preparing for all of the clicks. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cybermonday is the first monday after thanksgiving. it is a day when people get back to shopping online. and hwhen they do, facilities like this one fly into motion. amazon has 14 miles of conveyor belts here alone. this one is sending out some of the very first packages of the holiday rush. amazon customers worldwide bought more than 64 million items on cybermonday last year. that is 740 items per second. this time around, a surge in shoppers clicking their smartphones will keep the employees inside this mammoth fulfillment center just as busy, according to amazon spokeswoman lori torgeson. >> this year we're already seeing thanksgiving day was one of the most popular mobile

know, that allowed for the settlement to happen in the first place. we don't know how that process works. >> i think that's why people get frustrated. >> yes. >> i think if it had been a republican i think many people believe nancy pelosi would have had a different -- >> she would have had a different take on it, absolutely. >> is there a different standard for politicians? >> there's certainly a different standard, that they can settle it secretly and money can be paid out for this or other workplace issues. i think more than anything congress is beginning to realize, the men at least are beginning to realize they don't serve in a frat house. they serve in a house of representatives and in the senate and the time has come and the change is coming. >> i think one of the things we learned here at cbs -- and you reported in "the washington post" too -- is that many staffers don't know how to report a sexual harassment claim. >> absolutely. >> what is congress doing to change that? >> the house is going to pass a resolution that essentially mandates sexual harassment training for members and all staff. the bigger step will be if they go into this labyrinth of steps

you have to take that can take up to a year to settle these claims, and if members decide to publicly release the information about these settlements, i think it would be a bigger change. people forget the legislative branch is not beholden to the same transparency and privacy law that the executive branch is. that would be a big change that probably would help settle this. >> let's switch gears and talk about the deputy director of the consumer financial protection bureau. she filed a lawsuit to block president trump's appointment of mick mulvaney. >> yeah. >> what are you hearing from capitol hill? >> democrats defend the agency. it was elizabeth warren's idea before she was in the senate. they will stand with the new deputy director in her lawsuit. but republicans and the president certainly don't like it. tom cotton, a republican senator from arkansas, called it an unconstitutional agency. it will be an interesting legal battle for sure. >> what about the to-do list congress has? >> it is long and not a lot of days. >> 12 legislative days until christmas. they got a lot to do. >> all right. ed, good to have you here.
