even the president is weighing in on his firing. >> breaking news overnight. matt lauer has been terminated from nbc news. >> reporter: matt lauer is out as he could host of "the today show" following accusations of sexual misconduct. >> we are devastating and processing it. >> reporter: the host said she was heartbroken for lauer and the colleague who came forward. >> how do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly? and i don't know the teens that. >> reporter: nbc news released a statement saying on monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. while it's the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he has been at nbc news, we were also presented with reason to believe that this may not have been isolated. lauer is the latest high- profile media personality fired this year over allegations of sexual misconduct including fox

news host bill o'reilly and cbs' charlie rose. rose's colleagues at "cbs this morning" reacted to this latest scandal. >> i have a sickening feeling of deja vu certainly because we're dealing with our own situation here but it does send a message and shows that you are not too big to fall. >> reporter: president trump, who has also been accused of inappropriate behavior, weighed in tweeting -- wow! and then adding, but when will the top executives at nbc and comcast be fired for putting out so much fake news? nbc says it will continue to cover the lauer story as more details emerge. >> lauer became cohost of the "today" show in 1997 replacing then long-time anchor bryant gumbel. veteran radio host and writer garcon keillor confirmed today he was fired by his long-time broadcast home minnesota public radio over accusations of

improper behavior. garrison told the "associated press" but didn't give details. no comment from mpr. students could have higher taxes if the house plan goes through. students already pay taxes on stipends but not on tuition grants. kpix 5's jessica flores explains how uc-berkeley students are fighting the plan! >> reporter: uc-berkeley graduate students are used to crunching numbers in their fields of engineering and physics but now they are doing the math to fight the proposed tax bill in congress. the house version removes a deduction for tuition grants. >> one of the things we did is we created a tax calculator that lets students determine what the tax impact is going to be. and so we saw as a result of that, a lot of students from uc- berkeley but different universityings coming to the realization that this will impact them directly. >> reporter: she used a calculator to plug in the $13,000 grant for tuition.

if it was taxed that would mean an extra $1,000 more to the federal government. >> this affects me by taxing the tuition we get as a condition of doing research full time. that's money i never seam but if it is taxed it affects me at about $100 month, $1,200 a year and this is money that really affects me. it's tough to live in the bay area. >> reporter: the students are now organizing phone banks and they say they are working with the university to lobby congress. these students worry that many graduates would drop out. >> what you're going to see is you're going to see people not going to graduate school as much because they can't afford t you will see american students go out of the country and international students stay in their home countries. >> reporter: students are making a push to find the tax on tuition with students from about 15 universities staging walkouts today. in berkeley, jessica flores, kpix 5. president trump is in missouri today where he will promote the gop tax reform bill making its way through

congress. the white house claims that the middle class will benefit the most from this plan but democrats say it will disproportionately help the wealthier and big corporations. at least nine gop senators have expressed concerns about the bill including repealing obamacare's individual mandate. taxes on small businesses and deductions for property taxes. yesterday the president had lunch with republican senators to push for their support. >> i wish you could have been inside that room. it was very, very special, the camaraderie, the somewhat of a love fest. they want to see it happen. >> republicans are aiming to bring their bill to the senate floor for a vote this week. the president is facing criticism today after he retweeted three anti-muslim videos posted by a member of a british group. one shows a muslim smashing a statue of the virgin mary. another one shows a boy being pushed off a roof and last

night, he posted this one entitled, muslim migrants beat up dutch boy on crutches. it's thought to be fake. >> whether it's a real video, the threat is real and that's what the president is talking about. >> the videos were posted on a british group's twitter page that's against the islamization of the united kingdom. the mayor of london condemned the videos north korea says it has a missile that can reach the united states including washington, dc after it launched its latest intercontinental ballistic missile. mola lenghi has the latest from washington. >> reporter: north korean state tv announced today the rogue nation's launch of its newest and longest range missile. north koreans applauded when the reports showed their leader signing the launch order. in july north korea twice test- fired a less powerful predecessor. during tuesday's launch the

ballistic missile was purposely lofted high into space and reached a maximum altitude of nearly 2800 miles. analysts say if it fired on a standard trajectory it could travel 8100 miles far enough to hit anywhere in the united states. >> it went higher, frankly, than any previous shots they have taken. >> reporter: the missile stayed in the air for 63 minutes before splashing down into the sea of japan. shortly after the launch, president trump said the u.s. will handle the threat. this morning, he tweeted, additional major sanctions will be imposed on north korea. the u.n. security council meets in emergency session today to denounce north korea's latest act of aggression. it's still unknown if their new missile could support a nuclear warhead and survive re-entry into the earth's atmosphere. [ sirens ] >> reporter: on tuesday, hawaii previewed its new emergency sirens. officials urge people to be prepared for a worst-case scenario. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. north korea has now launched 20 missiles this year.

the latest test was done in the middle of the night and used a mobile launch pad. experts say that made it more difficult to detect a man who was badly burned at the wine country wildfires has died bringing the death toll to 44. an austin, texas church has confirmed 41-year-old michael south africa zarian died at uc- davis medical center. he moved from texas two years ago for a new job. his friends say he was an engineer and loved photography. the wildfires broke out over a month ago and destroyed 8900 homes. new details, we are getting our first look at the gunman accused of shooting at an elementary school with bullets. a 21-year-old man was arrested last night. police say nicholas o'connor fired shots at the school around 4 a.m. yesterday. the bullets damaged two school surveillance video cameras and left bullet holes outside the libraries. evidence dumped in a backyard

pedestrian and bicyclist safety. kpix 5's anne makovec headed to a new effort kicks off in san francisco today aimed at improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety. kpix 5's anne makovec headed to the south of market area to explain. >> reporter: this busy corridor is ready to undergo a $20 million construction project transforming 2nd street from king to market right through eastern soma, a neighborhood with new high-rise condos at at&t park on the eastern end. >> it will turn into a stretch that better serves our city for

the 21st century. >> reporter: here's the city sketch of how it will eventually look a wide sidewalk, a separate bus lane, two raised bike lanes, one going each way; and a turn lane in the middle. and this is a bird's-eye view from above 2nd street where it intersects with folsom and brannon. while the city's ripping up the road, they will replace the water and sewer systems, too. that need was highlighted just yesterday with this water main break at second and harrison. >> we all as a city do have to understand that construction does interrupt a little bit in order to gain something more valuable. >> reporter: the changes are meant to make 2nd street safer. it is part of the city's vision zero program. the goal, eliminate all traffic deaths by 2024. >> if all goes as scheduled, the project should be finished by fall 2019. >> reporter: in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. new at noon, today lawmakers are taking up a bill that would expand gun owners'

rights when they leave their home states. kpix 5's jackie ward joins us now to explain. >> reporter: think of it this way. you know how driver's licenses are transferable across state lines? today, new gun legislation being proposed would do the same thing for concealed carry permits. the first bill the house judiciary committee is looking at is called the concealed carry reciprocity act. senator dianne feinstein says if passed it would specifically hurt states like california and new york states that have very strict gun laws because it would allow weaker laws to take the place of those stronger ones. >> someone with a concealed carry permit from nevada or arizona would be able to carry a concealed firearm in california. no questions asked. >> reporter: the national rifle association says this type of legislation is exactly what is needed in order to get rid of so-called confusion surrounding various state laws. representative richard hudson of north carolina told "usa today" earlier this month that the recent shootings in las

vegas and texas reinforce the significance of passing this bill because carrying a concealed firearm is an important way to protect and defend people. the bill is expected to pass committee today and then move to the house floor as early as next week. >> thank you. new at noon, google has fixed its hamburger emoji problem. you may remember the uproar last month after it was discovered the burger had cheese on the bottom. it was a top priority for the company to put the cheese on top of the patty. so all is good. >> i'm so relieved. outside because the weather is nice. let's check the headlines. we are going to see cool and foggy morning for what we are dealing with in the morning. the surf is up. the swells are big. swells expected to be between 10 to 16 feet today. every 18 to 20 seconds there is a beach hazard statement in effect through the end of the day today. watch out for rip currents and sneaker waves. temperatures are feeling nice out there. in the 60s already for some areas. here's our satellite-radar to give you an idea of the cloud cover. it's not across the bay area. we are seeing it to the south of us and to the north of us. there is a small storm system across the pacific northwest bringing rain down from parts of oregon but for us we have sunny skies and our forecast through the end of the week.

the weather will be the same through friday. dry through the week. temperatures in the south bay in the mid-60s today. santa clara where we are expect those temperatures to hit about 66 degrees. san jose 65. these are with five degrees above average. for the east bay we go we are looking at temperatures in the mid-60s so a few degrees warmer than what we had yesterday. in san francisco, we are going to hit 62 degrees for that afternoon high and petaluma of 66 degrees. sunset tonight at 4:51. it's going to be beautiful if we have pretty wispy clouds out there. our seven-day forecast, you can see a slight chance of rain in our forecast but it's not going to get here until possibly saturday into sunday. we are looking at clear conditions for next week. we are here at whole foods. we have a big reveal and i love that you have the total covered up.
