southern california is raging out of control burning homes and forcing thousands to find shelter. good afternoon. >> that fire is burning just north of los angeles. governor brownished a state of emergency a short time ago. crews say wind driven flames have scorched more than 30,000 acres and destroyed at least 150 buildings. chris martinez is live with the latest from ventura county. >> reporter: that wind continues to be a big problem for firefighters at this hour, continues to push this fire further than it has been. this is the result when you combine the fire and winds. a lot of homes and neighborhoods are just simply burned to the ground and gone. right now thousands more are still threatened. firefighters battled raging flames inches from homes in ventura county. the wind whipped blaze broke

out monday rapidly igniting vegetation fire officials say hasn't burned in decades. >> i have lived in ventura most of my life and i have never seen anything like this. it brings tears to my eyes. >> reporter: desperate homeowners used garden hoses. >> this is my mom and dad's house. >> reporter: many battles are lost. >> good friends up the street lost their homes and i am just so sad for them. >> reporter: flames devoured dozens of homes and businesses and thousands more are threatened. evacuation orders are in place for nearly 8000 homes. our biggest area of concerns in the city of ventura was structure protection and also as the wind picks up. >> reporter: shifting winds are making it difficult for firefighters to gain the upper hand. on this street alone, a number of homes have burned. helicopters are being used to us to flames while firefighters from neighboring counties are being brought in to help.

weather conditions are not favorable. the forecast calls for high winds and low humidity throughout the week. another live look at some of the damage. unfortunately, this is not a rare sight in the area today. we can tell you there are about 1000 firefighters in the area right now fighting these flames. the firefighters are really from all over the state of california and we know that more of them are on the way as we speak. >> including a lot of firefighters from here in the bay area. 8000 homes evacuated now as you mentioned. are there more plans now? is this something that a lot of people on the out skirts of evacuation orders are still worried this afternoon that they might be included? >> reporter: absolutely. people who have not been evacuated are watching closely because the winds here are so sporadic and continue to shift directions. everyone in the area has been told essentially to be ready, be on guard. there could be more evacuations

depending how much further the fire goes and fire officials are making sure that everyone is on stand by in case it comes to that. >> chris martinez live in ventura county. our hearts go out to you. we know how it is to have such a wild moving fire after our wine country fires. stay safe. ventura fire department is getting a lot of help from other agencies across the state including alameda county. the department posted this footage of firefighters leaving for so call. firefighters from san rafael, marin, santa clara, san mateo. at least 1000 are there right now. >> this is nearly two months after the wine country wildfires. santa rosa city council will meet for a rebuilding planning session. the fires destroyed more than 5000 homes in sonoma alone. clean up crews are making progress. they have cleared more than

1200 properties removing more than 300,000 tons of debris in the north bay. in oak land, thousands of city workers have walked off the job. their major strike shuts down a number of facilities. jessica flores is live where protesters have been marching for hours outside city hall. >> reporter: that's right. about 3000 city workers are striking. many are behind me, have been picketing all day. the big dispute is over money and wages. the mayor says if she meets union demands that could mean cutting essential services. we know that essential services are shut down today. the mayor apologized to residents, specifically 400 head start families, that went without daycare. >> i recognize their frustration but i cannot spend money i don't have. i can't. tales not responsible to anyone. so i am not casting blame. i am recognizing that both sides have legitimate reasons

to be frustrated. that's why we have to put that frustration aside and get back to the table. >> reporter: meanwhile, union workers out hire continue to picket. it sounds like a party but they are very frustrated. they say they'll picket later today. city workers on strike effectively shutting down buildings and services to demand better conditions. >> give us a wage or something decent. >> we have not had a contract in so long. we just want our cost of living. >> reporter: unions representing workers in nonemergency services including public works and parking enforcement say this is afof co broke down. oak land rejected the union workers' offer to have willie

brown mediate the talks. the mayor says the strike is unlawful because the two strikes haven't declared an impass. still the sides can't agree on a major sticking point. the city wants to tie the second year of a two year contract to revenue growth. the union wants a guaranteed 8% raise in the two year period. >> i think she can look harder. there is some money somewhere. i think it is being put in other places. she doesn't look at us as a priority. we are a priority. >> reporter: as long as this strike continues facilities like senior centers, public libraries, recreation centers will remain shut down. no workers for street sweeping, maintenance work, or parking enforcement. police and firefighters are still working today and school is still in session. meanwhile, city council plans to meet tomorrow to discuss this contract. the city attorney is looking into legal action against the unions. i am jessica flores, kpix5. >> thank you. new, a big rig dangling

dangerously over the side of an i-5 over pass in stockton. towing crews had to harness it up and lower it down by crane. they latched the chains under the cab of the truck to pull it off the guard rail. we are not sure what caused the crash but we know that the driver crawled out seemingly unharmed. sandra osbourne has more on what locals think of this highly anticipated strike. >> this strikes the hearts of many in san francisco. you can see the pride flags and banners posted all over. while many argue this is about more than just a cake the decision made by supreme court will have major implications. >> they shouldn't be allowed to discriminate based on this. >> reporter: freedom from discrimination verses freedom

police presence ar a death investigation is underway in the south bay. chopper 5 captured heavy police presence around mount pleasant high school. san jose police got a call for a body found on south white road around 7:00 am. when officers got there, they found a man dead. it is not clear how the man died or if there are any suspects. police say the incident does not involve a student or staff member. two suspects arrested and accused of killing a man over an iphone 10. the victim a 32 year old father from red wood city. detectives tracked down the 18 year olds through the let go app. the teens saw an ad for an iphone 10 on the app similar to craigslist. they met the seller danny carlos at a busy gas station on november 18. the teens tried to rob him but when danny pushed back they shot and killed him. both are charged with murder. people who work from home

are more productive, at least according to a study. in a recent survey 39% of people who work from home said they put in extra hours compared to 24% of people at an office. researchers say it is a double edged sword. companies have to help people learn to manage the tendency to over work so they tend to give back 50 to 60% of the time they would have spent on commuting. >> now we have to set up a weather studio at your place. >> i can look outside my window all day and call that work. why not? we wouldn't have all this fancy equipment to work with. i would rather work right here. we did talk about the king tides. they started sunday and they're wrapping up today. now we are about an hour after the peak of the high tide. 7-foot waves in ocean beach at 11:00. about an hour ago. we are going to start to see an impressive shrink when it comes to the tides. they're going to move farther

them out of the northeast in fremont. there is dry offshore flow that we are seeing east northeast at vallejo at eight. we have high pressure across california. this low is moving out east. that is what's sending the santa anna dry winds from the east across southern california where the fires are burning and spreading quickly. the one from santa paula spread to ventura. you can see the wind stream, with significant winds. we saw gusts of 70 miles per hour, predicted to be up to 80. red flag warnings until thursday afternoon. i wish we could say the windy conditions will ease up. here is what we can expect as far as ourselvessen day outlook. sunshine through the weekend, we can hit near record morning lows and near record afternoon highs. it will be quite the pendulum swing with temperatures. >> it does look like you will get bored in the meantime. >> a lot of sunshine. tomorrow morning i am ready for
