good afternoon. let's go right to meg oliver who is live in new york city with the very latest. >> reporter: business is back to normal around the port authority bus terminal behind me. but earlier today commuters ran out of the building yelling "there is a bomb." grainy is you are valence shows -- surveillance shows the the moment a bomb went off in a busy pedestrian walkway during the height of new york city's rush hour. the suspect is identified as 27 year old akayed ullah was taken into custody with nonlife threatening injuries and burns. three others also suffered minor injuries. >> he intentionally detonated the device. >> reporter: police say the suspect was in brooklyn and is believed to be originally from bangladesh. >> at this point in time, all we know of is one individual

who thank god was unsuccessful. >> it shook a little bit. you didn't really hear it too much but you felt the shake. >> reporter: the incident triggered a massive police response. nypd is flooding the area with officers keeping people away from the scene and reassuring new yorkers that the area is safe. >> let's go back to work. we are not going to allow them to disrupt us. that's exactly what they want. >> reporter: numerous federal agencies are looking at additional surveillance from the scene to be sure no one else was involved. local hospitals have treated four people with minor injuries. they will all be released today. cbs news learned that the suspect also had a second device on him but it did not explode. i am meg oliver. back to you. >> meg, when did the suspect originally come to the united states? >> reporter: akayed ullah first

came in 2011 on immigrant visa. he was sponsored by people in brooklyn e. he later obtained a green card and became a permanent resident. he initially came with his parents and siblings. we have learned that he has traveled back to bangladesh during that time. >> meg oliver, thank you. city workers in oak land in the 7th day of the strike. but today many are hoping there could be a break through. our kpix5 reporter is at oak land city hall. >> reporter: the big break through this weekend is both parties decided to work with a mediator. talks with the mediator began this morning. they're going to be ongoing this afternoon. on the 7th day of the strike, union rallies started early outside of oakland city hall. the city made what is called its last best offer on thursday including a 4% raise the first year. the union said no.

>> we have just recently got some fair increases over the last contract but that doesn't negate all the concessions we have had to take since the the recession. >> reporter: the parties are working with a mediator chosen by the union. the mayor's spokesperson says they're respecting mediation process by not speaking publicly so far today. but she's been making the same point, that the union's demands would increase the city's unfunded liability. >> we love our workers, respect them so much but we can't spend money we don't have. >> reporter: the 3000 workers included in the strike, everyone from garbage collectors to people who work at senior centers and libraries. >> i know so many of you support us. we love you, and we can't wait to get back to work. >> reporter: back out here live, you can see a lot of the workers sitting for lunch now. there is a possibility that the strike could end later today if there is enough progress made in the early hours of these

talks. because that is the reason that the strike began according to the union, because the city refused initially to sit down with the mediator. we'll see how this goes. today marks one week since massive wildfires started in southern california. flames have now scorched almost a quarter of a million acres. the largest, thomas fire, exploded from a brush fire to a raging inferno. the thomas fire is the 5th largest wildfire in modern california history but it's only one of six major wildfires torching the state. together the fires are burning an area larger than new york city and boston. 18,000 structures are in the path of the thomas fire. the fires have scorched more than 230,000 acres, more than 80,000 acres burned in just one day. a total of almost 800 homes and buildings have been lost.

at last check, it is 15% contained. fire crews from san francisco are being deployed to the front lines of the thomas fire. crews from ape cross the country even as far as alaska are also helping out. a group of young people challenging the federal government today is one step closer to finding out if the lawsuit will move forward in what's called an unprecedented environmental case. >> reporter: this group is made of about two dozen young people. they range in age. the oldest is 21 and the youngest is nearly 10 years old. this morning was the first hearing in a landmark environmental lawsuit inside a san francisco federal court room. young plaintiffs alleged government is violating constitutional right of citizens to have a healthy planet by not doing enough to limit use of fossil fuels. the kids filed the case two years ago against president obama. the justice department now under president trump tried to

get the case thrown out. a federal judge in oregon agreed to area it. today both defendants and a lawyer for the plaintiff presented reasons why the case should or should not consider. >> in the position of the previous administration and current administration is accepting all the allegations pled by plaintiffs as true, these claims lack merit as a matter of law. >> the complaint alleges that federal collectively and through fossil fuel system are depriving the young people of their rights to life, liberty, property. >> reporter: there is a stay on the case meaning it is paused until the judges decide whether the case will move forward. plaintiffs say the goal is for district court to order a plan for more fossil fuel regulation in the u.s. three women who have publicly accused president trump of sexual misconduct got together for the first time today. they're demanding that congress investigate their claims and

hold the president accountable. the women shared their experiences at a joint event held by brave new film. today one of the accusers addressed a wave of sexual misconduct allegations of other men in congress that led to their resignation. >> i am hoping that this will come forward and produce enough pressure on congress to address this more than just for their own members, to address it with the president. >> more than a dozen women made claims against the president during his presidential campaign. accusations range from sexual harassment and misconduct to sexual assault. president trump has denied the claims. we are a day from alabama's special election. today the candidates for senate are making a final push for voters. volunteers for doug jones are scrambling to get out the vote. they're hoping a big turn out will help make him the first democratic senator there in 25

years. president trump is doubling down of his endorsement of roy moore. he recorded a robo call going to voters. moore is dismissing the several sexual misconduct allegations against them. >> i do not know them, had no encounter with them. i never molested anyone. >> this is an election to tell the world who we are. >> a majority of polls show moore with a slight lead over jones. it is guessed that if moore does win he can immediately be subject to investigation by the ethic committee. new, mario batali stepping away from his restaurant business and abc television show amid allegations of sexual misconduct. multiple women allege he groped them on inappropriate places on their body. the allegations span over 20 years. he has pledged to regain the

respect and trust of everyone around him. an abc spokesperson said they asked the colleague to step away from the chew while it reviewed allegations against them. a common computer scam that rips people off. according to a new report, victims don't even know they're being scammed. >> 2018 golden globe nominations continue to swoop for prizes and numbers in the film categories. we'll look at the topics. >> we are seeing a mix of smoke and clouds in the higher levels of the atmosphere. we will talk about our air quality and a look at our afternoon highs, coming up.

president trump's opposition. the pe new at noon, transgender people will be allowed to enlist in the military next year despite president trump's opposition. pentagon says enlistment will start january 1 and will go on amid legal battles. two federal courts have ruled against the ban on transgenders. still potential recruits will have to overcome a long list of requirements that could make it difficult for them to join the military. a growing number of americans are falling victim to what's known aztec support scam. better business bureau estimates at least 400,000 americans have been duped this year into paying money to scammers after receiving pop ups saying their computers are infected. messages are hard to make go away and always include a phone number to call for help. >> lots of people have been ripped off by the tech support. they don't even know they've been ripped off because they think they really had a problem with the computer and there is nothing wrong to begin with.

>> surprisingly people between 18 and 34 are most likely to fall victim to the scam possibly because they use computers the most. experts say if you get a pop up warning, turn the computer off and back on and that may be enough to fix the problem. there is no scam in your forecast. it's pretty nice out there. >> it is. we are starting to notice the mix of the smoke and high clouds out there. it looks a little dim, not as bright of a sun. there is hazy conditions. some of the low lying areas are getting more of the haze. in fact that smoke is coming all the way from southern california to our area. looking at the long range forecast, we are going to stay dry until december 20. we have quite a few days of high pressure that's still dominating our weather. that does mean chilly mornings and warm afternoons. this afternoon it feels pretty good. you can see the high clouds out there. temperatures are in the 50s and

60s. we started off in the 30s in a lot of areas early this morning. this afternoon we'll feel more comfortable. you can see the high clouds across the bay area taking over. this is the smoke from southern california area that's now being pushed up towards san francisco, sacramento, even as far as eureka. these are in the higher levels of the atmosphere so you shouldn't smell the smoke. air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups. this is our 4th spare the air alert. i want to show you why. high pressure is the story. it's hovering over the great basin and has been for a while sending santa ana windy conditions to southern california. behind this we are getting south to north winds. that's what's pushing some of the smoke into our area because of where the high pressure is located. as far as our winds are concerned, we are seeing calm conditions across red wood city, fremont. we are continuing to get the

offshore wind, the dry air is still there. you can see winds in napa of 14 miles per hour. afternoon highs today will be in the upper 60s and low 70s. 71 is expected for san jose and santa clara. we have mid to upper 60s if you are headed to the east bay, pretty good conditions if you want to go outside for a walk later today. temperatures are in the mid 60s also around the bay, upper 60s in sonoma. here is what we are looking at as we look into the future for the next several days. high pressure will be dominating keeping any storms well to the north of us. that's what we will continue to see for the next seven days. temperatures will drop off a little bit on wednesday. we are going to get on shore flow to return. that's going to increase humidity in the air and also increase some of our -- decrease some of our
