the morning news and cbs this good morning. we have sad news to report. i am kenny choi. >> and i am michelle griego. we have that news. san francisco mayor ed lee has died. we just got word that he died just after 1:00 this morning at zuckburg hospital. lee was 65, surrounded by friends and family and colleagues. in a communication statement, it was said our thoughts are with his family. now more with what we are learning in the newsroom. joe? >> it is a shocking scene at zuckburg hospital. ed lee, the 43rd mayor of san

francisco has died. according to some sources in the hospital speaking with the mayor's staff and supervisor, all the supervisors there now, it is a state of shock. the staff members are in tears. there is a lot of consoling and hugging as mayor lee just announced a few hours ago in the middle of the night. the former mayor willy brown tells me he was told mayor ed lee was shopping at safeway when he collapsed. an ambulance was called. could, to a source there at the hospital now now -- according to a source there at the hospital now, a top official was briefed that the mayor was speaking with paramedics on the way to the hospital, so he was still conscious on the way to the hospital. but some time between 10:00 and 1:00 this morning it went terribly wrong and the mayor dead this morning, pronounced

in the 1:00 hour that mayor ed lee has passed away. right now at the hospital as i mentioned, a succession of people. all the supervisors are there. much of the top staff have been awakened in the middle of the night. it is a scene of devastation at the hospital. we are getting a little bit of information at a time. as we get it we will bring it to you. kenny? >> thank you. the latest on that situation outside the hospital. zuckburg hospital in san francisco where mayor ed lee died early this morning, the 43 mayor of san francisco. >> for more on his tenure, here is kpix 5 news' andria borba. >> yes. certainly -- ann mack vick >> yes. he was the first mayor of san francisco. he had be the city administrator since 2005. before that he was the director of public works. when he was appointed mayor he was taking over for former mayor gavin newsom who resigned

to become the lieutenant governor of california. mayor ed lee at first said he wasn't sure he would run to keep his post the following november, but he got we tigs with the campaign-themed "run, ed, run j." so he ran and won easily, then ran for re-election in 2015, virtually unopposed. he has been a very popular mayor. here are comments from the san francisco's first acting mayor. according to city charter she is now acting mayor, london breed. >> the 43rd mayor of san francisco, ed was 65 years old. our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, anita, his daughters tania and brianna, and his entire family. >> again, san francisco mayor

ed lee was 65 years old. you heard from london breed there who is now the acting mayor of san francisco. she was very close to the mayor ed lee, following in a lot of his footsteps, of course she never expected to be following this closely at this point. it will be interesting over the coming days how her leadership comes together, a shocking time for the city of san francisco as a whole. >> many of your stories, you have talked to mayor ed lee on a lot of occasions. he did a lot for the city. i just read in in the chronicle a couple days ago hewas doing a program called the fix it program to try to clean it up, a reluctant but popular mayor. >> he mentioned the public works programs. that was very close to his heart, coming from public works when he was the director of it. he had that in his his mind. he was conscious of where the

city was going when it came could roadways and how it was mechanically working, but he will be missed. >> yes. and the big problem in san francisco in homelessness, we know mayor ed he loo started in politics as a tenant's rights lawyers, addressing low cost housing. >> it is a huge challenge. we did a lot of stories following the homelessness crisis. he indicated he was hard pressed to find a solution to this problem, but you always got the sense mayor ed lee was listening to what you were saying and trying to negotiate with all the different sides, making the compromises and make things happen. >> ann, thank you so much. a lot of reaction is pouring in on social media.

the san francisco supervisor post this had photo of lee at a recent race saying, quote... francisco, effectively immediately. breed is a native of san francisco. she was first elected to the board of superbisors in - 12, and repr >> solon don breed becomes the acting mayor of san francisco immediately. she was a native of san francisco, elected to the board of supervisors in 2012 and represents the fillmore district. in 2015 she worked to cut ambulance response times by 26%. she now becomes the first african-american woman mayor of san francisco and second female in history after dianne feinstein in the 1970s. we will have a news conference and try to bring that to you live, coming up. >> our special extended coverage will continue,

for more on ed lee's run as mayor of san francisco, here's anne makovec. >> reporter: welcome back. we are here announcing the sudden death of mayor ed lee outside the zuckberg hospital. london breed now the appointed mayor. ed lee was appointed in january of 2011 after gavin newsom resigned to become the lieutenant governor. he won the election that year and re-elected again in 2015.

he has examine outspoken about immigration and the sanctuary city movement. he was on the human rights commission, as well from 1991 to 1996. we heard live from london breed earlier ago. she found out the news. very emotional for her. take a listen to what she had to say... >> in accordance with the city charter, i assume the role of mayor of the city and county of san francisco affective immediately. >> we will be hearing more from her a little later on at city hall. there will be another news conference that takes place at 10:00. we will bring you all the details from that, as well. we know that mayor lee had his wife, anita by his side, and alt leaves behind two

daughters, anita. >> he was the mayor since 2011. talk about the boom of the tech industry, as well. a lot of different factors facing him during his tenure as mayor of san francisco for almost, what, six or seven years right now. and he had been making some progress. a couple of the big pushes he had going forward were to end chronic veteran's homelessness by the end of 2017 which he made some progress on that, but that is one of those situations that is almost impossible to actually accomplish. vision zero was also very close to his heart, the goal of having zero pedestrian and bicyclist deaths in san francisco by the year 2021. still working on that. you can bet all the leaders

still in san francisco city hall will be pushing those goals forward once we get over the shock and the sadness here of the changing of guard. >> you know, a politician's job is every easy. the mayor of san francisco's job is even tougher with a lot of controversial issues. he was appointed mayor in 2011 replacing gavin newsom, then following that he won the election in 2011 and after that 2015. talk about his persistence as a mayor. he faced a lot of controversy but he was very persistent in what he wanted to get done as a mayor. >> certainly, a long with other things to deal with. he was pretty good at dealing with people, a likable character. that is what helped him get easy elected the two times he was elected to san francisco mayor. we are going to hear very soon from former mayor willy brown,

lying areas. we are staying dry until december 20th. high pressure still will take over the great basin. another spread the iralert in effect today. a view of the golden gate bridge right now. temperatures in the 30s for concord, livermore and oakland. san francisco is 50 degrees. some areas in the 50s, some areas in the 30s, especially depending on what side of the hills you are on. we are seeing calm conditions as far as the winds are concerned. east winds, still. we will see a shift in the wind direction coming up this week. east winds at 4 miles per hour, north-northwest in fairfield at 6:00. the on shore breeze will begin. here soo look at satellite and radar. cloud cover today. a few high clouds coming through yesterday. we also saw the smoke coming through yesterday. i want to show you visibility-

wise what you can be expecting today, the south and east bay nice and clear. the low lying areas including santa rosa where the temperatures are dropping to the dew point level the visibility will be decreasing, 1.7 mile visibility for santa rosa right now. here is the deal with the southern california fires and smoke that may be impacting us. there is an east wind that is blowing that smoke across the ocean. the smoke rises and when it gets higher up, the wind is blowing it from the south to north. yesterday we saw a mix of smoke and high clouds in the upper levels of the atmosphere. you don't necessarily smell it but you can see it. it looks dim outside. air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups along the north bay and coast, five days of spare the air alert, meaning no fireplaces are allowed to be used. and the high pressure is still here bringing us above average conditions. another high pressure system

will work its way through. once it arrives closer to the west coast the winds will shift, becoming an on shore flow. that is the seabreeze getting the humidity levels to rise starting tomorrow through the end of the week. temperature-wise mid to upper 60s. low 70s for san jose. another warm one for you there. and across the south bay it will be the warmest spots on the map. looking ahead to the weekend we will start to see the dip in the high pressure flattening out, then storms may be coming through from the north. not necessarily bringing us rain. instead you will see in the seven-day forecast cloud cover coming through by saturday and sunday. then things will clear up for the start of the workweek next week. let's check in on the roadways. good morning. a rough start to the tuesday morning commute. an accident blocking two lanes by an overturned vehicle. this is northbound 680 as you are approaching highway 242. you can see the flashing lights and emergency crews on the scene there with the overturned

vehicle. a heads up if you are traveling in that direction. your ride out of antioch looks fine. here is where the accident is. we are seeing a few slowdowns. traffic is light at this hour. it could impact your ride if this is part of your normal commute depending on how long it takes for the crews to get those lanes cleared. and at 580 through the altamonte pass the usual slowdowns. the speeds drop below the limit there, a 20 minute ride between 205 and 680 and all looks well at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far so good. we will keep our fingers crossed for you. back to you. >> thank you. a massive fire overnight prompts dozens of evacuations in the oakland hills. the fire started at a two story house under construction on the 6800 block of snake road in the montclare neighborhood. we have more live at the scene with the very latest with jessica. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. we are on the driveway of a home that has been evacuated here.

the fire is still going on behind me. you can see some of the embers right now. this fire started as you mentioned in the construction area. this home was under construction -- two homes were under construction. it basically started there. those homes totally engulfed in flames. the fire spread because of the rapid winds here to three other homes. the embers fly in the air all around here. roads above and below snake road here were evacuated. those spokes headed to montclare elementary school. they are still here with the evacuations going on, but the fire seems to be under control. we are dealing now with a lot of smoke and embers. it is really smoky. the wind is still pretty strong. that is what is carrying the embers and firefighters are still here evaluating this. take a listen. we did speak to the fire chief earlier. >> we had gusty winds that contributed to significant concerns from the crews and first responders.

so we are very fortunate that everyone got in place and was very aggressive and did everything they could to prevent this from escalating. >> reporter: again, about five homes effected by this fire. two completely destroyed. the other three we are still getting a sense of the extent of the damage. we have about three fire trucks on the scene at the height of it. 71 firefighters were here battling this blaze, the site of the devastating oakland hills fire. we want to make sure this gets controlled as soon as possible. they are concerned about the hot spots. they will be monitoring that for hours and want to make sure this fire is completely out before they leave the scene here in the montclare neighborhood. >> thank you, jessica. now to the wildfires in southern california. according to cal fire flames

have scorched over 231,000- acres, bigger than new york city and boston combined. 25,000 homes are still threatened. 98,000 residents have been evacuated. the largest fire is the thomas fire northeast of ventura that burned more than 230,000-acres and still poses a danger to the santa barbara area. now with the latest from the area. >> reporter: from the glow of christmas lights to the glow of a hillside on fire, this family says they are prepare. >> i have been a little more nervous about this because i have never seen anything like this. >> reporter: they are in a voluntary evacuation zone, but across the street it is mandatory, so they have taken down all their family pictures and important documents packed and ready to go. the calmer winds helped in the fire fight, firefighters say, and allowed them to do a control burn. air drop and structure protections all day and night. the main focus is on keeping the fire away from montecito

and assuring the fire stays above highway 192. they are in the mandatory area but decided to stay feeling confident in the firefighters. >> i am surprised i am not more stressed out than i am, be you if i have to get in the car and drive down the street, i will. >> reporter: and this family has their business to think about. mareyette flowers has been in the family with for decades. >> i don't want to leave as quickly because i want to make sure everything is doing okay here. >> reporter: the roses, some will decorate the float for the rose parade, haven't gotten enough sunlight because of the smoke but are ready to leave the flowers and home behind if the fire gets too close. >> it keeps coming down the hill. it makes me scared if it keeps coming down this week. >> reporter: though firefighters are making good progress on the fire, the

there is a break in the murder case. police arrested mitchell bacom, 63 years old now, for the arrest and murder of the 14- year-old girl in 1980. officialermen discovered her body in the san joaquin river days after she disappeared while babysitting. she had been stabbed once in the heart. >> thanks to the advances in forensic science, the positive identification of suzanne's killer became reality. >> the match was obtained using new dna technology. he had a lengthy criminal record and was known to the family, but they won't elaborate. city employees in oakland are heading back to work at kpix 5 news christin ayers

reports. >> reporter: wages and a host of other issues here at an impasse we are so happy oakland is getting back to work. >> reporter: after eight hours of bargaining with city and union officials hunkering down in separate rooms, with no official agreement on the table, a chief negotiator for seiu says the city has changed its hardline tone. >> the city altered its position from the final ultimatum delivered last week. >> but hours later the mayor libby shaft said not so fast. the parties reached some agreement on working condition, but that is all, she said. >> we are at impasse. that has not changed. our position has remained the same, but we are committed to engaging in the mediation process. >> reporter: that commitment enough to convince the union to suspend the strike. public works employees will get
